David,
Thats another opportunity for a flying restoration here, perhaps a syndicate or UK arm of the Commemorative Air Force could be formed to pursue it?
CEES,
I saw your comment about the Skau in Norway about Halifax BB214 in a German Lake, I googled this and its a 103 Sqn Halifax II lost in 1942, that crashed with fatalities, do you know how complete it is?
Any information available on the other Halifax’s in Norway lakes?
Hal
It would be nice to see a Skua returned to the country of origin for restoration. It seems however that a project has no chance of complete restoration because of lack of funds. The Lotty could provide some needed funds for projects such as this. There is still a Barracuda underway, a Whitley, Stirling. If the Halifax BB214 is recovered from that German lake the chances of full restoration in the UK are slim I think. Look what the Norwegians and Canadians have achieved. And the Brewster Buccaneer in the US.
CEES
Thats fantastic,
The desert conditions could have kept these Stirlings in perfect condition, other than re-joining the wings, and the existance of mulitple airframes could yield a static and airworthy restoration with spares as well, now that would be a great addition to the BBMF!
Is anyone actively investigating this site for recoveries?
I also heeded the advice to review other posts on this site, and noticed a persistent reference to a Stirling existing in China, is anyone actively investigating that for recovery and restoration to fly?
Imho the saltwater content of these sites are not very beneficial for the airframes and I tried to convince Karl that Norway still has some potential for complete Halifaxes. But he said he really wants an airframe with RCAF pedigree.
CEES my real interest is the Halifax and to see one fly, I understand that the restoration to fly of a recovery from salt water is so difficult that it would be easlier to build one new, but what about the complete Halifaxes you mention in Norway, are these in fresh water? do you have identities and locations?
Is anyone else investigating these for recovery? with the RAF Museum already having one as a static display they should revover another one for restoration to fly with the BBMF?
Its dis-appointing that so many B17’s, B24’s and even B29s can be restored to fly in America yet we can only support one solitary British heavy Bomber back home.
The Heritage Lottery could be used for recoveries and restoration and I would much prefer to see the 3 Heavies from WW2 flying again than to watch a Vulcan or even Concorde fly again.
I know I have a lot of questions, but this site is great to be able to speak to the experts behind the stories in the magazines and find out whats happenining behind the scenes.
Hal
I have some questions on updates on british heavy bombers?
1. HALIFAX
Any more news on another Halifax recovery,?
what happened to project “57”?? and their planned recovery?
Is it viable to consider airworthy restoration of the next one?
2. STIRLING
Is there any prospect of a Stirling recovery?
I understood the RAF Museum was investigating one?
Is there still a project to build one from replica parts and recovered fuselage sections similar to the “Friday the 13th”
Is it viable for that to be built airworthy in stead of static?
3. LANCASTERS
Are any further Lancasters in Canada under rebuild to fly?
I see the Lincoln has gone to Australia but is not going to fly,
is the lancaster that went with it going to be rebuilt to fly?
4. LINCOLN
I see Argentina has two Lincolns, if the one going to Australia isnt going to fly has anyone looked at acquiring one of two in Argentina and bringing it back home to fly in the BBMF?
5. WHITLEY/WELLINGTON
Any further details on these restorations, any being considered for upgrade to airworthy outcomes.
HAL
Hey thanks for all the info on that Lincoln, great to see another heavie being restored.
Can anyone update me on my favourite aero the Halifax and the prospects of the two recoveries muted over the last few years, one from a lake and pne from the sea?
Hal
How complete is the Australian Lincoln, if its not going to fly are Temora going to have it taxiable, it will look great on the flightline with the Meteor and Canberra and other contempories, when is it due to arrive and be put on display?
Does anyone have pics of it being disassembled, where was it on display before it left the UK?

JDKLincoln – watch this space.
? does anyone know for sure? what is going on ?
is it going to Temora to be rebuilt to fly??
Hal
Wasnt there a website for the Australian bid?
I thought that Australian group had pulled out and returned its donations and a UK purchase was now proceeding? are you sure this rumour isnt out of date from last year?
Hal
getting back on thread – Thanks for all your replies,
I know some of the Canadian Lancs might be capable of restoration to the air, but I was really more talking of airframes that have not yet recovered?
HALIFAX
I thought there was at least two Halifax’s muted for recovery, one from the sea around the UK? and the other from a fresh water lake in Europe?
STIRLING
I also thought there was a sunken Stirling muted for recovery by the RAF Museum?
LANCASTER
I had heard of an intact Lancaster also in a fresh water lake in Europe?
I had also heard of a second derelict French Lancaster in the Pacific
Are these all “pub” stories, or are there real airframes and recovery opportunities behind them?
Can anyone elaborate on these?
Hal
