And so it continues…
Danish zoo that killed Marius the giraffe puts down four lions
Copenhagen zoo says it has euthanised two old lions and two cubs to make way for a new male
A Danish zoo that prompted international outrage by putting down a healthy giraffe and dissecting it in public has killed two lions and their two cubs to make way for a new male.
“Because of the pride of lions’ natural structure and behaviour, the zoo has had to euthanise the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves,” Copenhagen zoo said.
The 10-month-old lions would have been killed by the new male lion “as soon as he got the chance”, it said.
The four lions were put down on Monday after the zoo failed to find a new home for them, a spokesman said. All four were from the same family.
He said there would be no public dissection of the animals since “not all our animals are dissected in front of an audience”.
Within a few days the new male will be introduced to the zoo’s two female lions, who have reached breeding age.
The zoo’s chief executive, Steffen Straede, said: “The zoo is recognised worldwide for our work with lions, and I am proud that one of the zoo’s own brood now forms the centre of a new pride of lions.”
Last month the zoo’s scientific director, Bengt Holst, received death threats over the decision to kill an 18-month-old giraffe, Marius, who was put down with a bolt gun before children were allowed to watch his body being chopped up, dissected and fed to lions.
The move shocked thousands of animal lovers around the world who had signed an online petition to save him. The zoo said on its website it had no choice but to prevent the animal attaining adulthood since under European Association of Zoos and Aquaria rules inbreeding between giraffes is to be avoided.
Many Danes were surprised and even angered by the international reaction to the event, with a leading expert on the ethics of the treatment of animals decrying the “Disneyfication” of zoo creatures.

Hate to think what happens if they decide that they are over staffed…
^^^ What he said.
how can it not be compared it has been lost a few weeks and they have enough evidence to say it has crashed into the ocean thus meaning it could easily be compared
But we have enough electro jiggery pokery stuff to be able to say MH370 crashed, and in an ocean too. Isn’t that case solved?[/SARCASM]
Smoking.
Intolerance of other people based on creed, colour, age, financial situation, mental stability, style of dress (except chavs).
Nationalism/blinkered patriotism (particularly that from the other side of the pond which is seeping in over here – the sort that says ‘we are right: you’ve got the problem, not us‘)
Re 115
….” even as a popular leader…”
Remind me. How many elections did she win? Apart from you and Snafu she surely had someone voting for her.
Gosh, her and Blair – a right pair – capture the attention of the country? Yes, she won the odd election (although count up how many people didn’t vote for her… No, that is not the way to mandate leadership but it sure is quite a judgement on the political system) but then so did Blair and I wouldn’t want him back either. Anyway, if voting really made a difference they’d abolish it.;o)
Re119
I can do better than that. Lady T made millions very happy even to the point of voting for her !
She made her party happy by leaving Downing Street in tears, and quite a few people happier still by taking a similar career choice to Tony Benn’s… Even her ‘beloved’ son was pleased, if you read the right red tops. Probably added more to the Devils workload though (if you believe in that stuff)
Just a thought, re the Black box, not much good if it’s in very deep water as they think. Why don’t they invent some sort of gadget that is released/detached from an airliner when it goes into Sea Water, and then floats, still being attached to the sunken aircraft, and able to send a distress signal. Even if it only transmits for say….24hrs. It’s not exactly rocket science is it?.
How long should the mooring rope be…? Why not just make the whole aircraft float? Why not…ah, never mind.
Be a lot easier – and, lets face it, much more useful – if there was a GPS reporting system that was able to pin point the location of every airliner with a facility to back track the route if necessary. It could be linked into the navigation system or that used by the on board phone system, but from now on every system is not going to be able to be switched off on board without an awful lot of alarms being set off.
Do you mean the same son/Pillock who caused a huge search and rescue Operation when he got himself lost in the Desert?.
If certain red tops are to be believed he hadn’t seen her for several months when she died; easily checked since he lives in South Africa and apparently has certain restrictions placed on his movements due to his involvement a failed coup d’état in Equatorial Guinea.
people using religion as an excuse to be homophobic
As I’d always say if anybody ever asked me about the subject: if you don’t agree with gay marriage don’t marry another man (or woman, depending on your own sex).
And Snafu – smoking – I had you down as intolerant but yet again you prove me wrong……….
But I care for you, all of you.[/rolleyes] And I am intolerant…
Smokers who sit in their cars with a hand holding a cigarette held out of the window.
If you don’t like the smell and the mess, don’t do it. How difficult is that to comprehend?
Saw one this morning; it was a taxi, sitting at a rank, windows open and fag dribbling outside the window – complete with no smoking stickers etc. The driver was still sat in his seat and still appeared to be blowing his smoke inside the car…
Names or it didn’t happen.
If this was suicide then it was going down, whether the gubbins was switched on or off. And pilots are going to be edgy because they will think everyone distrusts them now, and especially in the future if they have control of stuff removed from their abilities. At least if the switch off is flagged up then the authorities will know where to look in the event of this sort of thing happening again.
You may laugh but you only have months 48 hours before your account is destroyed!
Don’t delay…
Snafu. May I cautiously enquire – is your favourite colour beige ?
No, light grey…[/rolleyes]
Is yours bile?
why do people have a problem with smoking may I ask
Did I miss anything out?
Do you mean objecting to smoking or objecting to anti-smokers?
Um, I’ll get back to you on that one.
It gets my buttocks clenched, when eating out in a restaurant, and have the misfortune to be sitting near anyone who is eating their food with their mouth open.
I hate being in restaurants when other people are buttock clenching… Do you go to the gym to practice?
And how, exactly, do you get your food in your mouth, Lincy?;o)
The turkeys that do not give you a thank you acknowledgement when you stop to give way on the road, and I must admit it tends to be the older generation that are the ignorant.
Know what you mean but…did you know that any signals you might give from your driving seat that are not given in the Highway Code could cause you to end up with points on your licence? Not that these drivers care since they already own the road anyway…
By this point pain is all in the mind. He should have cut at the neck, not the wrist…;o)
I’m getting very close to leaving them a note on behalf of the entire block/street.
Anonymously?
But the black box is already fitted so the pilots know everything is recorded so nothing has changed. If the pilot is going to commit suicide there’s not alot you can anyway BUT the problem with the Malayan crash is that they cant find signals from the plane or black box–hence the system needs to be that it cant be switched off.
Yes, there is a black box inside every airliner so that investigators can find out what happened (if it was recorded by the black box). But if this was intentional then the pilot (or copilot, whoever) decided to try and hide the evidence by putting it well out of usual reach, at the bottom of a mostly unfrequented corner of the ocean where it would be difficult to track down. That was why I suggested a thingy (complete with alarms, etc), which would be difficult to turn off, to relay a GPS location so that it would be easier to find the wreckage…
Until the black box says what happened i feel it’s unfair to blame the pilot-his family must be going through the mill already yet he may be a victim the same as all the others.
Yes, that was why I said ‘if’.
On the other hand it might have been abducted by flying saucers, just as likely a scenario at the moment until something proves otherwise. Cue the loony finger pointing…
There seems a lot of belief in black boxes, but have they been updated recently? It used to be that they only held the last 30mins of info; if nothing was said and there were no control inputs (the airliner being allowed to take itself down for its final ‘landing’) then all it might be able to tell us was that it was quiet and nobody did anything…
No no-no no.
Won’t help her. But I’m sure there is legal assistance to be easily found. For a price.
