Yes, since the Foxbats were often stationed at Far Eastern airbases facing the USA and Japan, they were pretty much off the civilization. MiG-25 was used for several other roles than just intercepting incoming bombers. It was a perfect platform for hunting deers, rabbits and foxes and Soviet technicians also claimed that one flyover at low attitude with the radar turned on caused sterility with a duration of approx. half a year. Nevertheless, the most significant role of the aircraft was mirrored in its nickname ‘The flying bar’, since under normal conditions the bird was to be loaded with no less than 300 litres of pure ethanol. Not necessary to say that in reality good two thirds of the daily ethanol ratio were pumped out and swallowed by thirsty Soviet throats rather than used for its original role.
Because of this simple fact the real combat readiness of Foxbat crews and technical staff was usually in accordance with their 2.12 promile of alcohol in their blood. 🙂 But on the paper it surely looked muich better, because the commander of the base responsible for the paper work was usually more drunk than all others 😉
Huge bottle of Vodka 🙂
I think the Mexican Air Force would have to purchase aircraft which will be able to operate in conjunction with the Hawkeyes it recently purchased. This puts Russian fighters or anything like them out of contention. I am sure that a lease of New built Saab Gripen could be an option in a deal similar to the one made for Bulgaria. However, I believe the best choice would be second hand F-16s from the USAF. I can’t really see Mexico needing more than sixty such fighters and I am sure there are enough of these at ARMAC with lots of time left on the airframes.
I do not think the Mexicans want to build combat aircraft as Brazil but rather build aircraft to sell like Embraer and make Money since it is rumored that Antonov might build aircraft there.
Mexican E-2 Hawkeye and a kit Helicopter Rotor Way assambled in the Mexican Navy mantainance center in Veracruz state, this small american kit Helicopter was the begining of the Mi-8 assambly deal with Russia for the Mexican Navy but also the Lancair kit aircraft was assambled there. there were rumors that Antonov is also thinking in building aircraft in Mexico since the representative of Aviabaltika said once the plant is finished it will be possible built Antonov Aircraft there.

There is no question, the capabilities are given. Test-flown at Akhtubinsk or Lipetzk.
But the shortage of money denied a modernisation program for Flogger, when there is not enough money to keep the Su-27 to “Export-level”. Most Floggers are retired or using-up the fkying-hours left. No more than a handfull faithfull operators, the fighter variant will retire before the ground-attack variant.
Up to what i know the MiG-23 were stored and deactivated in the case of any eventuality, the cheapest MiG-23-98 update costs USD$300,000 so in the expeculative side what state or modernization or conditions to me is unknown, but was the MiG-27 first retire before the fighter variants in the early 1990s and the MiG-23 fghter variants stored in the late 1990s 😀 i saw a picture of Ukrainian MiG-23MLD operational in 2000 and the a Ukranian armed forces web page quotes the ukranian Mig-23 as operational but i do not know if this is true
I’m not sure what Mexico uses their F-5s for. If the main reason is just general protection etc, I think used F-16s block 15/20 etc is fine. For running down drug runners I would think a F-16 might be a bit of an overkill.
Do Cuba’s Mig-29s ever venture near Mexico’s air space?
I would think anti-drug missions might be their air forces main task so maybe a trainer lead in arcraft might be their best best. Something like an Su-39 could perform most of their missions and meet most of their training needs as well. But I don’t think the US would allow Mexico to buy Russian made jet aircraft. Buying Russian helicopters are one thing but jets I don’t think so. The US will most likey make them a very good offer on used F-16s in the end.
Mexico and Cuba are good buddies, i doubt Cuba or Mexico are provocking each other, these two nations are brothers despite the US presure long live to the Mexican Cuban friendship 😀
source?
The official Mexico Navy web page
according to some reports the US, Canada and Mexico are planning a NATO style self defense force for NAFTA to prevent terrorist attacks and that is the only thing if realized that will make Mexico buy more military stuff but at the Moment drug dealers your time is up 😀
They can’t afford it, Mexico is DEFINITELY not Brasil!! Hell Even Brasil has a hard time with obtaining even a small number of Su-35s..
Brasil: Military budget: $10,439.4 million (2003)
Mexicali: Military budget: $5,168.3 million (2003)
Mexico spends less that is true but also as % of it`s GDP not because they can not buy weaposn but because with the US Air force nearby nobody can touch Mexico neither mighty China or Russia
Actually I think the best option for Mexico is something like Yak-130, M-346 or T-50, they can serve as trainers, light fighters and would be very suitable for CAS and of course Drug Interdiction. They might as well replace those old F-5s. The Yak-130/M-346 or T-50 with R-73/AIM-9 will be fine for Mexico’s simple Air Policing and would be better than a F-7MG which is better than those AJTs only in terms of dogfighting probably and cost.
Mexico already will buy L-159 Albatros, that is a fact but for the Mexican Navy to intercept drug dealers so is i do not think they will buy Yak-130 from russia but the Russian could well make an offer
I think the main reason I think that Mexico has held on to the F-5s for so long is that they have very long range. And that is a very important factor in the defence of such a large country. There are relativly cheap modern fighters like the K-50, Gripen, Ching Kuo. But they all have very short range. I would actually prefer Indian built Jaguars over the aforementioned 4th gen fighters because its equal to them in performance and has much greater range.
The first priority though is to replace the T-33s with something like the Pampa or L-159.
Mixtec Saludos carnal,
Mexico i feel will replace the F-5 to my taste either with Russian or American fighter, i do no think they will buy Israeli Kfirs jet in 10 year but they could well buy ex Israeli F-15s or F-16s , if Brazils Buys Russian Su-35 and Argentina and Venezuela buy MiG-29 is very likely that with the new Russian-Mexican military relations, Russia will propose cheap Migs but since Mexico and many other nations in latin america could well be buying russian i feel the US will make a counte offer perhaps in 10 years time of cheap F-16C block 50 or perhaps even Ex-US navy F-18 Hornet
they sould buy Su-35 build in Brazil
Another Russian link claiming the MiG-23MLD has Helmet Mounted S 😀 HMS in MiG-23MLA ight
Mexican ERJ-145 and E-2 Hawkeye, if it would not by Israel Russia and Brazil the only Mexican aircraft would be the Warrior Eagles painted in the Aztec piramids, let`s chase drug dealers rather than fighters, some day might even fly in the US to prevent terrorist attacks along side the US E-3s
For the record I didn’t suggest the US was assisting SA with it’s technical aviation issues. Rather, I was pointing out that the US buys aircraft from Brazil now that that it produces useful non-military products. This strikes me as being supportive in an economic sense. How this can be veiwed as a negative is beyond me. Nor did I suggest that the US is responsible for the fact that SA is largly peaceful and democratic.
My comment about nukes was ment to be sarcastic  and was in response to the a rather dumb comment by someone else earlier in the thread.
I would imagine that many US companies have and are investing in many aspects of SA economies. Why would they not?
Perhaps a reasoned read of what people actually say rather than comments about “freaking out” etc would be more in order.
Sauron
Sauron do not worry i agree 100% with you, i like the US in many ways even admire it but i like to also say that the US considers latin America as it`s belonging rather than it`s Friends and Latin America needs to stand up for it self and not be always under the US shadow, i like and i would like the US invest in latin America in fact i would like a true friendship and partnership but unless the US changes it`s view of latin america as it`s servants and does not see us as strategic partners as the EU is viewed we will need to look for other and more reliable partners because we need to also develope our technology and allow the talent in our nations to grow but the US does not allow it with it`s policies of just satisfying the US market at the expense of the workers and salaries of latin america and therefore the Latin American markets and also play us against nations such as China and Asia for investment
I have some sympathy for Cuban people too. As SOC posted before, to exspect the AF will obey the international rules was foolish. They payed the highest price for taking such risc.
Not to exspect some sort of resistance, when there is no way to vote for another government, is foolish too.
“well how are the Cubans going to know if the Cessna is not armed with Biological weapons and what right have the Brothers to do politics in Cuba?”
Maybe you did not red the postings before. The Cubans set a trap and trained for this before. Biological weapons, what dumb arguement, when it goes about political opposition and many relatives still there.
Acording to a Cuban friend of mine the US practised state terrorism against Cuba and he said that in many ocassions they indeed did it, so the Cubans they did not know if these were just plain panflets or any of the US attacks so they decided to shot down the cessna with this i do not mean the Brothers were attacking with biological weapons or the cubans were thinking they were thwarting a bioterrist attack by part of the Brothers but for a paranoid Castro regime that has been harassed by the US and even target of US assesination attemps, state terrorism is a threat.
