I am surprised nobody picked this up. The IAF Mig’s are not upgraded to the Mig 27-98 standard- they are a pretty much IAF specific upgrade done by Indian industry. The upgrade brings the MiG27’s to present day stds but the Russians were pretty cut up about HAL being able to do it alone and hence losing out on all the moolah.

Perhaps they may still get involved if the IAF antes up more money for an AL31F derivative engine replacement. But I doubt it.

I did not know that but do you have a reliable source for such information you can recommend me because i also read that the MiG-27 in the recent US-India excersises was capable of shooting down the F-15Cs in mock combat

The MiG-23MLD was fitted for the R-73 and was often seen carrying the launch rails for such weapons. In fact, the MiG-23MLD at the USAF Museum in Ohio has some of them fitted (see below). The FCS was never modified to allow R-27 carriage. This was an assumption made on the part of the aviation media. They reasoned that the new, more maneuverable MiG-23 might have been refitted with elements of the MiG-29’s FCS, the R-27 replacing the R-23/24 and the R-73 replacing the R-60. However, since the R-24 was a relatively decent weapon and much more reliable than the older R-23, the Russians only replaced the R-60 with the R-73.

    SOC

THe assuption made by the aviation media was partially righ, the MiG-23-98 can launch the R-27/AA-10 Alamo, however the main problem was not the Missile but rather the Radar, The Saphire-23MLA-2 ( Saphire-23MLD) was thought being capable of firing the AA-10 Alamo and being also capable of multitarget engagement capability because since the introduction of the AA-12 Adder the MiG-23 was tested as an AA-12/R-77 platform, however it seems it never enter service with the Soviet/Russian Air Force as such and was only offered as an upgrade option for MiG-23 users.
This was complicated by the fact the AA-10 Alamo has an active radar homing variant and the fact that there are reports of Soviet/Russian MiG-23MLD Flogger K retrofitted with Multitarget engagement capability despite that technically it is possible to make the MiG-23MLD Flogger K to do such feats it seems it has never entered service as that but can anyone confirm the MiG-23MLD`s multitarget engagement and AA-10 firing capability?.

No, it can’t carry R-27R. It might be able to carry R-27T but was never fitted for such.

I agree with you and i would say that the Russian web pages i have read up to now do not mention the MiG-23MLD as AA-10 capable but there is several webpages that claimed that it did carry it however i would not argue that the MiG-23MLD+ otherwise known as Mig-23-98 it is capable to fire it but it is very hard and up to now i have not found a reliable source to prove that the MiG-23MLD did carried the AA-10 as a standard and operational weapon

There was a report about two Hawkeys delivered by Israel to Mexico in the last AFM magazine. Looking at the fact that the planes were in a museum and had enough delay during delivery flight… I doubt that they will have perfect operational service.

It is funny but Mexico also bought R-99 and ERJ-145SA becasue the US would not sell E-2 Hawkeyes and you are right the Hawkeye are old but the Israeli avionics are good and the Embraer AWACS are quit capable survaillance aircraft

That MiG-23 Red 07 looks like the 23MLD Flogger-K variant the ultimate of the Flogger interceptors. Can anyone confirm whether it carry AA-11 and AA-10 weapons ?

The MiG-23MLD can use AA-11 Archer for sure but about the AA-10 that is more difficult to confirm, it is not a question if is possible to adapt the AA-10 to the Fire system of the MiG-23MLD since by simples upgrades to the radar or by adapting a podded mini phased array radar to the MiG-23 fire system and this will make the MiG-23 able to fire AA-10s but only the MiG-23-98 is the only variant that i would asure is capable of using the AA-10.
It has been repoted that the MiG-23MLD was capable of firing the AA-10.
The tiny picture is a MiG-23-98 and it`s arsenal and there is included the AA-10 Alamo and the other is of the new MiG-23 engine the Al-31F that currently the Russian are working to adapt to the MIG-23 upgrades after 2005

    For our Mig experts….

Am I seeing a wing fence on the upper wing, or is it my imagination??

Doesn’t look like it has an aerodynamic function

Flogger… can you upload a higher res picture? btw nice pictures 🙂

    Thanks

    Mark

Those are nnot wing fences but Flar/Chaff launchers and are not on the wing but on the top of the fuselage

someone knows about their engines? R29 and R15

    The MiG-23/27 used the AL-21, R-27, R-29 and R-35 and the MiG-25, the R-15.
The Mig-27/23 upgrades will be fitted with the AL-31F, the same engine of the Su-27 and J-10 from 2005
    Two pictures of a R-29 and R-35

http://www.tassphoto.com/images/photo/orig/d195/973.JPG Check this link for the Yemeni MiG-23 overhaul perhaps these are being upgraded to MiG-23-98 standard although they look as if they were just being built

Did the MiG-23-98 ever get any orders?

To my knowledge only India has updated it`s fleet of MiG-27M to MiG-27-98 standard; perhaps other operator such as Yemen have updated their MiG-23 as in the picture where some Yemei MiG-23 are being overhaul on a MiG plant along side MiG-29s but to be honest i do not know any other MiG-23 operators except India with it`s Mig-27M that have been upgraded to that standard but what i know is that an upgrade can be as cheap as USD$300,000 just to to make an old saphire to fire AA-10, AA-11, AA-12 and have multitarget engagement capability or USD$1 million to change the saphire with a new radar that allows the same armament plus some overhaul to the airframe do you know any?

I know the Czech republic tested the magic 550 AAM on it`s MiG-23ML

Good for Mexico, this should help out their economy to an extent.

Russia should take a more active role so the US can cut off support to Mexico until such time where they choose to learn the meaning of and enforce international borders. Or we find the money to build a minefield.

I agree Mexico should find new partners so can become independent and get rid of the US hindrance to the domestic technological development in Mexico and Latin America and Russia in that sense is a better partner than the US as is China and India

Mexico has stated that they want to buy surplus J-6 from the PLAAF to replace their F-5’s and work with their new E-2s, the news was from JDW

to my knowledge Mexico bought 32 ex-swiss Air Force F-5Es that are to be delivered in November 2004, i feel Mexico won`t buy Chinese J-6 they are too old and the Russian deal was mostly because Helicopters do not represent a real threat to the US and is mostly is a way of making money and get some technology transfer because Brazil is simply leaving behind Mexico in aerospace technology and the mexican aerospace industry is in fact to basic and uncapable of building even a small propeller airplane despite in the 1920s was as capable as the US in the ability to design aircraft, i feel unless the US request from Mexico a more powerful defence forces to help on US military actions in exchange of Migratory and Economic preference over other nations and if the Mexican senate certified a deal of such nature it won`t buy too complex armament and any way it would make more sense to buy ex-russian Mig-29 rather than J-6s anyway the Mexican Navy will buy L-159 from the Czech republic

It has been reported that Mexico might also start building An-26 under license but that deal still is in the making

    This year.

Is the Flogger still in production? because if they are of this year it means they are still making Floggers
