Very nice museum, two really well presented hangars, and some a/c you wouldn’t expect to see in a museum of that size.
Some of the outdoor exibits look a bit rough, which gives you a bit of a bad impression as you pull into the car park, but i’m (reliably) informed that they are in the process of, or about to start, working to restore some of these.
Agree with TEXANTOMCAT on the second hand books, definitely worth a look in the shop on the way out.
Didn’t get a look in the vulcan when we went, as it was the monday after Waddington, so the volunteers were a bit thin on the ground.
Elvington is worth a look, if you’re heading north and someone else is paying for the fuel!
I’m setting off after work tonight, about 6 ish.
it’s about a 2 hour drive, so we’ll be there, tent put up, and in the boozer by nine, with a bit of luck.
Though after last night, i might stick to the alcohol free stuff.
Made our weekly trip to the pub after our game of squash and i fell spectacularly over a gate taking a shortcut through the playing fields on way home.
On the way there, i’d nonchalantly vaulted the same gate. Apparently it’s more difficult to do in the dark, with beer inside.
The airshow website got updated with some details of what’s on the ground, looks impressive. I wasn’t sure how much there’d be, not having been before, but seems like there’s going to be plenty to see.
Might leave the army climbing wall alone though,.:D
lovely piece of sarcasm there, thanks.. i’ll repeat back, also very slowly.. we are aware that airfix don’t make a victor.
I said the difference between Airfix and Revell, not the difference between an Airfix Victor and a Revell Victor, didn’t i?
If you read back.. I said i’d looked, and thought the only available one was by Revell.
Earlier, woe of woes, I made the mistake of generalising the term ‘airfix’ to mean an aircraft model in kit form, as opposed to the specific manufacturer of said models. Boy, am i sorry now!
This, however, i agree with;
“Embrace your anorakdom, wear it like a badge of rank. For it is the light and the only true way.”
They get allsorts of visitors at Lakenheath and Mildenhall i guess, and in flying terms, we’re only a stone’s throw away.
Fair point on the thread-jacking, it’s been my fault both times today, made the mistake of mentioning airfix kits to Scott (the rightful owner of the thread!) and ended up unwittingly pulling in Kev_35, self-confessed anorak for a completely off-topic discussion on the difference between Airfix and Revell.
What was the topic? oh yes, anyone off to Sunderland this weekend? lol
“Ps. Do you see the Apache, Lynx, Chinook, Hawks ect. ect. ect. “
I’m the same for rushing to the window when i hear something.
I’ve seen a Chinook (very low, probably less than 100ft, and banking quite steeply) a month or two ago, pair of Lynx come over occasionally, and a couple of Pumas came over quite low. Never seen an apache round here, though i know people who have, so they definitely come down here.
There’s obviously some sort of training that takes place round here, as they’re often flying low, treetop level, and usually not just going straight over.
Think i saw a pair of Merlins earlier this year as well, heard them go overhead but by the time i got to the right window they were a good distance away, fairly sure they were Merlins as they sounded heavy, like when a Chinook goes over, you feel the thrumming of the rotors before you hear or see them.
Hawks come over sometimes, saw one or two last week.
The Mrs saw something she was convinced was an F-22 about 2 months ago, it came low over the road right over my car, so i only saw a shape through the sunroof, and it was going pretty quick, but she was further up the road and claims it was a Raptor.
I remain skeptical. I’ve shown her pictures of the F-18, and anything else with that v-shaped double tail, as well as repeatedly telling her it was probably just an F-15.
I’m at work, we had two Typhoons over here most of yesterday, and a couple of Tucanos doing laps of our industrial estate (used to be an airfield, RAF Holme on Spalding Moor, where they tested the Buccaneer, we now get a lot of overflights from Tucano, King Air, Tornado, F-15 etc)
too far from a window to see any of them though, damn it.
I had heard that, i thought the Phantom i bought was quite nice, and didn’t look too bad once it was painted, but i’m impatient and heavy handed, especially with painting, so i expect if you were doing it properly, and not just slapping it on any old how, you might have had some work to do to get the panel lines right.
Hadn’t built one for about 15 years til i did a couple this year, so i’m technically a novice, and wouldn’t notice things like that.
I definitely haven’t seen one, can’t understand why they didn’t do a v-bomber set or something, Victor is easily as good-looking an aircraft as the Vulcan IMO..
And makes a great noise too. (I’m trying to find out from Yorkshire Air Museum whether it will be making some noise next Sunday, 3rd August, when they’ve got one of their Thunder Day events planned, will post if i find anything out)
Did a Revell f-4 Phantom a while back, quite a nice kit, don’t know much about the subject, but i guess there won’t be much of a difference in quality these days, all made in the same way, somewhere in the far east, whether they’re Airfix or Revell or whatever, are they?
Does she indeed, i looked at their online store, and it seemed quite limited, does she have access to a wider range? (is there a shed somewhere round the back of Airfix that has all the old ones they couldn’t shift!? that would be a great place if it existed)
Can’t find anywhere online that has an airfix Victor, so i reckon the Revell one might be the only one currently available.
Anyhow, best save that sort of thing for when the sun goes back in, got airshows and fishing to do while it’s not raining..
yes, i was a bit disappointed, was hoping i might catch some departures if they’re leaving on monday. I’d be passing Teeside airport on way home, Newcastle is in the opposite direction.
Lazy, i know, it’s only a few miles. Might detour that way if the weather’s nice.
The mrs wants an airfix Victor K.2.. we’ve got one locally at Elvington museum (XL231), and she thinks it’s the best thing in the world. (And she hasn’t heard the thing when it does it’s fast taxi runs yet)
I keep telling her she can’t have one til she’s put together the Eurofighter she bought months ago and never built.
Think we’re camping at Lizard Lane, as it was the closest place i could find.
Not as cheap as Coleby Village Playing Fields were at Waddo, but it’ll do.
aye, well we’ll no doubt seek you out one way or another, half price tickets for NEAM were mentioned by a reliable source, so as a tight fisted Yorkshireman, i’ll be sure not to miss that money-saver.
Of course, we’ll endeavour to spend at least the equivalent on airfix kits or something from the museum shop, so i don’t feel too bad about getting in on the cheap.
the website has this to say about it..
“HMS Southampton and RFA Lyme Bay will provide the backdrop to this year’s show and feature in a spectacular Role Demonstration alongside the RAF and Royal Marines to showcase their military capabilities in action.
The Role Demonstration will include Awacs, Tornado GR4 and F3’s plus Hawks, Chinook and Sea King Helicopters. This impressive 45 minute display will take place in the air, on the sea and on the beach.”
Role demo should be interesting, i missed everything that happened on the ground at waddington due to being way down the crowdline and there being a bit of a hill in the way. No such problems on the sea, one would assume!
Will try to find the NEAM stand on Saturday morning, forecast rain overnight and in morning, so it might be less busy for wandering around then.
White lighthouse. how hard can that be to find!
EDIT : You beat me to it with the quotes from the website (and remembered to paste the web address, which i copied, and duly forgot to paste!)
We’re coming up friday night, airshow saturday and sunday, then hopefully calling in at the museum on the way home monday.
Doubt it’ll be as good as Waddo, but it’s an excuse for a couple of days away.
Very briefly saw what i assume was a DC-3 (C-47, if you want to be picky..) over us while i was on lunch today. Only glimpsed it for a second through some trees, but it was painted with invasion stripes, travelling very slowly at about 200ft up. heading northwest toward York. Nice.
