The ex Flambards Gannet ECM.6 XG831 is on display there. But for me visiting the nearby RAF Davidstow Moor control tower (derelict) and gazing out onto the runways and taxiways is worth the journey itself.

I’m guessing it happened during wartime as i cannot find any Barracuda related crash in that area after 1946.
Rob
Wow a Lanc, that must of been a lovely find Jim. How much did you recover apart from the engine?
As i said i hope to return to the site for another closer look when it warms up abit :).
Rob
Right, but which one are you referring to Andy – VW885 or VZ779?
Rob
Well done to you both. Very fitting to see them beside the Wyvern and Firecrest prototypes too :).
Dare i ask whats next?
Rob
For me this forum is numero uno for keeping up to date with ‘grass roots’ projects and the bits and pieces that turn up from time to time. And as much as i admire and appreciate those with the where-with-all to restore and maintain flyers i think the mainstream aviation magazines do more than enough to feature those more on their glossy pages.
But what would i do if the forum folded.?… well i’ll worry about that when it happens ;).
Rob
PM sent 🙂
Rob
Thanks Nick. Yes i’ve got the chance to borrow a Forster so thats the plan when the weather improves (it was bitter on Wednesday).
I’m intrigued by your Wyvern search though. Would that be VZ779 by any chance?
Rob
Thanks Mike.
An interesting point about the site is that i was told it made a crater in the field on impact, but although hilly there’s no dent or deviation other than natural lay of the land. They must of made a good job of filling it in.
It may warrant a closer look when the weathers warmer.
Rob
They are beginning to look really good Santiago. Its also nice to see a lesser known type being modelled, especially the two S (Strike) Mk1 prototypes.

Lightnings, Buccaneers and Hunters up for sale again. Bids to be in by 31st March.

Hi Rob,
This is an enlarged extract from a larger photo that Mark12 kindly passed to me this week (as it also contains a Hornet).
This is the same “racing prototype” a/c shown from above.
Thanks for that David. Never seen one with the racing number on show on top of the port wing before.
And totally agree about what an amazing spectacle and sound those races would of been.
To quote from the Sturgeon book i mentioned, “the event was won by Peter Lawrence in the Blackburn Firebrand. The Sturgeon recorded the average speed of 295 mph and at the end of the first lap it was in second place, smoking and noisy but doing well, but it was eventually overhauled by the Spitfire and (possibly) by the de havilland Hornet”. 😎
Rob
No problem, hypothesise away OEB :). The National Air Races were held between 30th July and 1st August 1949, so i guess they were taken anytime between those dates.
The colours i have are a yellow “P” on a white circle with yellow outer.
Rob
Yep i understand that DB, but what i’m saying is its very unlikely the starting price will go up either.
At the end of the day if it is a company then presumably it will be needing to have a turnaround of stock, quite correctly as you say depending on purchase price, but also presumably would be open to negotiation on its prices.
I also understand what you’re saying re operating one, but although the Phantom is a complex beast just look at what has been achieved at Bruntingthorpe with the Buccaneers, with one in particular springing to mind as an example of just how much those guys can do to bring something back from the dead so to speak.
The level of expertise there in operating so many different vintage jets is surely unique in the UK now.
Rob
It bodes well, Rob, right up to the point when you see the price tag:eek:
Anon.
True, but at least at that stage the price can only come down 🙂
Rob -the numbers of Phantoms that will become available in future you can probably count on the fingers of both hands!
Well lets hope they follow a similar (apparent) route David, as that amount must surely present a possibility of seeing one running / taxiing again with the right group behind it, something that was apparently once a definate ‘no no’.
