Firebrand prop? Where did they find that?? Looks in amazing nick!

Thats been for sale on and off for over twelve months now Lee. But there was also a Firebrand prop hub that sold on ebay last year. I did go for it but got outbid, but had i been successful then i might of made an offer on this prop blade to make up a nice display.

No it was this one I believe.

Ok thanks. I heard it but by the time i got to the window it was climbing out, so apart from realising it was a Hunter two seater that was it. Nice photo by the way.

Thanks for confirming about the powered wing fold.

Brilliant photos Duggy and DC Page. That early arrester hook is an interesting design.
But its things like “a top speed of 206mph” and “Of the 41 Devastators launched by the US Navy aircraft carriers, 37 failed to return to their ships. A loss rate of over 90% in just one mission” that caught my eye.

Brave men indeed!

Great subject and photos guys. Just out of curiosity even though it was an early design did the Devastator have power folding wings seeing as they are the ‘up and over’ type, instead of the more manageable Wildcat / Hellcat ‘swingback’ variety?

Jason – thanks for posting up the full sad story.

Critter & Denis – thanks for that, and very interesting that three of you have now mentioned a Browning connection. It was found in the area where we were expecting P-51 parts to turn up, but such was the violence of the collision then i guess pieces of the P-47 could of been wedged in the Mustangs remains and carried on.

Does the piece above the pound coin look familiar to anyone? It has a kind of swivelling arm movement inside, with what looks like a raised ‘stop’ on the threaded part.

Yes as Lee Howard states they are exercise Mariner stripes. There’s a couple more tagged ones in the Wyvern album in my profile James.

chumpy / Chris – thanks for the email. Would of loved the place to of gone into GA. At least that way it would of stood a chance of being preserved.
And what more fitting an airframe to start off an embryo museum there now than the Supermarine Scimitar F.1 previously at Solent sky museum, and now sat outside in all weathers.

Getting back to the tower, we still havn’t had an answer as to when it was demolished. Anyone?

Bob i’ve noticed this has happened on several roads around Cambridge, with 60 reduced to 50 and 40 reduced to 30 overnight. And i’m not aware of any regulations that say they have to give notice before doing so.

Quite often the only way you find out is either the change of speed sign has disappeared completely, or that drivers are alert enough to spot a new mandatory sign replacing the old before reaching the dreaded ‘cash machine’.

I drove down to there last year as a kind of homage ‘to the service home of the Wyvern’ and also visited the carboot, but only in order to tread those hallowed runways :).

Speaking of which those that are still present are in a superb condition all things considered.
