    You can keep yer Griffons and Sabres, as personally i’d settle for the RR Eagle in Yeoviltons Wyvern TF.1 being fired up just once, and those eight menacing blades scything through the air :).

    Sadly i can only dream about what that must of sounded like 😎

    Great actor and very fondly remembered by me as a kid as Corporal Jones in Dads Army.

    Think that only leaves two or three of the original cast still around.

    No reply?….. surprise surprise. A few years ago i sent in some photos taken by my father for them to use in their magazine, and sent them by recorded delivery. They were received and signed for, but i never received them back nor did i get any reply to my many phone calls, emails, messages etc.

    Very poor show and a painful lesson learnt as regard that magazine!!!! 😡

    Not sure it counts when your the primary user and it’s “found” on your own turf; (so to speak) it’s a bit like finding a pristine choccy down the back of the sofa, still in it’s original wrapping!

    The question was “has a crated wartime aircraft ever been found above or below ground?” No mention of location!

    I’ve never heard of that, they didn’t usually keep Gannets in crates.

    Although at the moment its not much to look at i’ve started to make up a little display of representative instruments, equipment etc as used and positioned in a Short Sturgeon’s cockpit.

    Apart from the pilots notes and a couple of photos sent to me of Sturgeon cockpit sections in the scrapyard at Forres in 1964, finding information and reference material on the cockpit is as expected proving extremely difficult.

    The same problem was encountered by Tony Buttler whilst he was compiling photos for the excellent book ‘STURGEON, TARGET-TUG EXTRAORDINAIRE’. Both the FAAM research facility and Ulster Aviation Collection have so far drawn a blank too.

    Next port of call me thinks will have to be Bombardier Shorts themselves. Unless of course any of you guys have a schedule of spare parts gathering dust? 🙂

    Not wartime but i seem to recall that whilst the navy were looking for useable Gannet AEW.3’s to theoretically give the fleet some sort of early warning protection during the Falklands war they came across a crated Gannet. It was found to be an AS model (totally different aircraft) and subsequently ended up with the then British Air Reserve collection.

    Only just spotted this thread :o. Really sad to hear and see that the service has stopped completely. I have many happy holiday memories of seeing those big Sikorsky’s coming in over the sea, or driving along the A30 and hearing one running up behind the fence.

    I vital service to many i’m sure.
