There was a formation of a modern twin escorting Spitfire Mk1, Hurricane, Buchon and another Spitfire flying round earlier today. One of the Merlins sounded as if it was struggling to maintain the correct speed, being opened up then thottled back continuously.

Sitting on the fence for a moment, maybe it comes down to a simple choice to help create hangar space for future acquisitions. Either move on some of the arguably ‘less significant’ types in the IWM collection (the museums opinion, not mine), or have fewer private operators of airworthy aircraft based at the airfield!?

I’m well aware that private operators bring in extra revenue for the museum, and also give the place a more ‘live’ feel compared to many other museums, but covered space is always going to be at a premium given the comparatively small size of the airfield and its hangars.
