Excellent find Rich. Just love hearing of bits and pieces still turning up like this!

Many thanks for the information Nickwilcock. As you say it must have been spotting heaven for anyone interested. I thought that was the space vacated by the Westlands hangar, but thanks for just clarifying it for me. Did you by any chance take any photos, or notes on aircraft movements.. especially of the Wyverns being tested from there?

    Rob.

I like the Meteor NF.14. Something just right about seeing it lit up in its natural nocturnal environment.

Great photos David. For me they were some of Duxfords halcyon days, with hardly any fences, an untouched and undeveloped airfield, lack of red tape, and some great pioneers of our fledgling historic aviation scene. Happy days 🙂

What happened to the Fairey Gannet that was in the Mildenhall Airshow not that many years ago ? It was privately owned ,i have a few home videos i took of it at the show ,it had an emblem of a Bee on the Rudder ?

XL502 – ex Neil Moffat, Gerry Cooper and the Imperial aviation group (did they really exist?) – now at Elvington, Yorks.

Control tower looks very forlorn. But thankfully its still standing.

    Nice photos.

Nice photos James. Bet your tempted to sleep in that hangar tonight, if the heating works 😀

Also note that both props still seem to be firmly attached.

I don’t know whereabouts the RAF were diving, but back in the 1970’s a trawler hooked its nets on a wreck just off Bracklesham bay about a quarter of a mile out.

Probably a coincidence but two S.4 Wyverns disapppeared over Bracklesham Bay in 1957, having most probably collided. But they ‘only’ had 13 feet diameter props.
