Whenever i’ve driven past Dishforth i have always thought it odd that the current control tower is on the north side of the airfield, far away from the main airfield site and hangars. I realise that is not unique to Dishforth, but was there ever an earlier tower nearer the hangars.?

Whats the best way to preserve/treat something like that from the sea. Straight into fresh water.. or in salty water gradually being replaced with fresh water over a period of time.?

Strewth.. it would be a braver man than me to take that on as a project. As Harold Steptoe once said… ‘a bombay ****ehawk would have left more on it than that’. 😀

I cannot find the post now but someone mentioned the remains of a Balliol still present to this day.. quite possibly a Sea Balliol. Does anyone have some pics or an i.d for it?

Or maybe put it into Mildenhall and take off the wings for ground transport but i am unsure how hard that would be?

I was thinking more of Marshalls / Cambridge airport.. as it is that bit closer and possibly easier to access. But either way its got to be more desirable and cheaper to have one fly in under its own power rather than on the back of a lorry.

The Dan-Air Comet 4 came in i believe during 1974, but the VC-10 flew in during 1980.. after the M11 had scythed its way across the eastern end. But as you say curlyboy whether the present RAF types need distinctly differing lengths of runway to ‘get in’ is another matter.

I was at Duxford today and the guide said Duxford was getting a RAF VC10 but had turned down a Nimrod which seems a bit stupid and a bit of a repition as they have a civvy VC10 already! but only a comet 4 which is only similar to a Nimrod in passing?

    curlyboy

Not knowing the length of runway required by the two specific types to land safely, but could that be down to the VC-10 being able to fly in… and a Nimrod needing to be dismantled.?

Though having said that, if they do take delivery of another ‘Vicky 10’ then we can probably kiss goodbye to G-ASGC.

Part of the whole crazy (or strange!) thing about having aircraft bits is knowing you have something put together by industry and flown at 600+ mph!

Steady on James… some of us could only reach 383mph :o:D
