In the cockpit of ’29’, ‘Hoof’ Proudfout ; another gentleman sadly lost to us.
Regards, Brian S.
Lovely pic of Hoof Brian, and i echo your sentiments.
Many thanks vulcanlover for the Museum pics and the wonderful account of Sergeant Alkemade’s remarkable story… i shall definately be paying a visit son.
Going off topic but in the classic cars photo to the left of the white Rover P5B is a very rare Austin 3 litre, basically an oversize 1800 Landcrab with MGC GT 3 litre straight six.
Begs the question.. why not keep her active from the day she flew in.?.. saving time and extra effort needed to correct any deterioration through lack of use. Lack of funds i guess.
But anyway good luck to them in their efforts.
I’ve had this Griffon conrod and piston clock for around 30 years, and is one of the few items I’d grab if there was a house fire.
It was presented to me by a friend on 8 Squadron, after one of their AEW Shackletons had thrown a rod, which smashed the engine casing, and sent metal particles through the oil system. The gudgeon pin bronze bearing still shows signs of those particles…
Wow… what a fantastic piece. Definately worth sending the missus back into the fire to rescue it for you ;).
Yes.. go in on the friday by all means, but don’t automatically expect any action. A couple of years ago i went in on the friday practice day and all that came in was a P-51. Also be warned that the weather is more critical to flying on the pre show friday than at the weekend.
To be honest last year was an exception, as virtually the entire display programme was of aircraft not resident at Dx. This year barring any last minute CAA issues will i should imagine be ‘back to normal’.
(Virtually = The Majority).
That is certainly good news Wyvern Fan,
Glad to hear they are back on track. Do you have a time scale on this, with regard to other shows??
I have no insider knowledge on this one merlot… my comment is more hopeful than definate.!
I know… they are just soooo common… I went up to an airfield last year quite a few weekends in the summer and all that flew was a P51… or two… but do you know what… it was absolutely fantastic…
Don’t ever get complacent… you never know when it will all end…
Not complacent Yak 11.. just honest. 😉
At least that was at Old Warden, but back on thread, here is Lindsey Walton’s F-4U7 (I think) NX1377A at Upper Heyford in 1984.
My favourite F4U Corsair was always this one. I remember seeing her flying around on many an occasion whilst cycling home from school, usually with John Allison or the late John Watts flying her. Sad day when she left these shores.
Thanks for that TT… any other pics of the progress in her restoration would be welcome.!
Hi Tony,
Thanks for the pic.. its good to see her making slow but steady progress towards completion. Yes please feel free to scan the article as i’m not sure i read the first time round.
Rob.
Thanks for that Simon.. glad i got the year right. Looking through that list it looks like the F-111 had a real poor safety record.
Pic of my fave F4U… taken by my father on the very day she arrived at Duxford.
Sorry guys.. perhaps i should of mentioned that the Nimrod being ‘a bit of pig’ statement was apparently from a current display pilot… and not one on a carrier op.!
Anna:
Oshkosh is end of July, first week in August …Last year, this couple asked if I’d take their picture with their camera. After the first shot, I asked if they would mind if I took one with my CoolPix – and here it is.
Their story is that they attend Oshkosh every year and have their photo taken with “Sweet Revenge”. Wish I’d asked them the story behind that …. It would probably make a good country song … :)-
Very nice, never seen a picture of that bird in those markings before.
Oh… what colour top does she usually wear then.? (:dev2: sorry couldn’t resist)
