What is the longest contact you’ve made with your HAM kit? I know atmospherics plays a big part. Our local SS American Victory Ship Museum hosts a ham club out of the radio room onboard here in Tampa FL. Good luck raching them!

There is that whole “generation lost” thing we are fighting. Perhaps some mini documentary type following old vets (which we are quickly losing) visiting old airfields, museums and such with their kids and grand kids and reminiscing. I have seen too many articles on people upon their parents or grandparents dying find they were in bomber command or fighter command and the family had NO CLUE. They just didn’t talk about it. Once they are gone………we lose connection.

Here in the US, Ken Burnes did “A Fighter Pilots Story”. An excellent mini-series. Interviews, pictures, film clips, letters to and from home, old news paper articles, diary excerpts and vintage music all melded together into a multi-faceted story that people could relate to.

Found an interesting footnote on the Ercoupe, it was the first aircraft in the US to try rocket assisted take-off in 1941, Cut it’s take-off roll in half! Bet THAT was quite a ride!! Here is a link to a pic of that adventure.

Did some more digging. It looks like the Alon (American built) versions were called Aircoupes with a number of design changes from the earlier European Erco built Ercoupe versions.

Not what I meant….I figured it would be answered fast…just not that fast. Should have started with a pic of just a rudder! Guess it is a much more popular AC on your side of the pond. First one I had seen.

Question..in some places, I am seeing it listed as an Aircoupe as opposed to a Ercoupe. Any difference?

The entire tail is in brand new skin with no paint yet. Don’t know what kind of damage had been done, but the repair looks nice

Does any country have shore launched torpedo defense anymore? I know Norway did in WW2, didn’t do them much good except for helping sink Blucher, but in a tight strait…modern torpedoes…just thinking out loud! Could male trying to break into the Med a very costly affair!

Think it is the first one of those I had seen, at least up close!

My dad got called up for that one, being in the reserves. Though it was a whole 2-day call up….his Army Reserve unit was tasked with helping run the paperwork for all the stuff going out through the port of Houston!

We had a friend that got called up and shipped out for 6 months. He got stationed in Hawaii doing helo maintenance. They would take them from theatre, stuff them in a cargo plane, fix them in Hawaii, and ship them back. The sand in Hawaii was much nicer than the sand in the Gulf!

    One word. HOLLYWOOD

Of coarse, even the ride along film crew during the real missions were a pain in the a$$. IIRC, one went as far as suggesting that the pilot fly closer to those little black puffs in the sky so he could film them better!!!
