As I said, this is a work in progress. I am still working the paintjob, the sky, the water, the flak. I have yet to dirty her up.The problem with nice pictures of well kept museum pieces is that they ARE TOO pretty! They don’t let the grime accumulate.
Props…would they be yellow tipped…to get my look that would probably be the only thing seen in lower light(as was the time of the attack )
Depth charges?? any pics? might they be Type XIIIs, still trying to find info. DC mounts..any pics, seeking info…been digging page by page through the Squadron Log…what I probably would need is the A/C maint. log, not that I would understand the abbreviations and Mechanic lingo!
antenna? Still hunting…Some birds were equipped with radar by this point. I know her Newer squadron mates did but have nothing to substantiate the upgrade.
This is not the Jossing II, Jossing II was named to replace this bird after she sank up to her wing after landing damaged.
Thanks again for the comments. I will drop and updated image at some point as I get more info in. Solid information…It is like searching for a needle in a haystack, blindfolded, with one’s hands tied behind one’s back!
Thanks again
Chris

Here is a tweak of it, played with levels, curves and contrast. Would help if working from a larger scan. If you would like me to try another whack at it, email me a larger file and I will see what I can do.
I know size restrictions of the forum dictate use of smaller-compressed images.
In tweaked form, I think it is a twin engine, but like I said, a few more pixels to work from would be nice.
Stearman looks nice, we have a few of those that buzz around here. They would fall into the “starter” warbird category. A bit cheaper to buy and fly than say a Spitfire or Mustang! We had the 4 ship stunt team “Red Baron” fly at our last show in Stearman. Very nice!

Making your own bullets and working for under a $ an hour….sounds like you want to become an ARTIST! 😉
I should know…I am one!
Good hunting
Isn’t the internet GRAND!

Try this web site, they sell inert “drilled” ammo for display use.

Speaking of .303s. Anyone out there seen or have a link to a good pic of a Catalina PBY’s side blister .303 guns? I am working on an illustration of an RAF Cat involved with a UBoat and think they may want to be shooting their pop guns at it. I have found plenty of pics of the US version, but understand the RAF used twin .303s in the side Blisters.
I have seen it listed as twin Vickers and twin Brownings…Hmmm…the internet can drive one to drink!
Please point me to a link or pop a picture, and don’t eat the bullets…..slow death by lead poisoning! 😉

Here is an odd duck, well, not quite a Duck! Enjoy! (hope the attachment comes through, it didn’t last time-probably user error!)

** I may be biased, I’ve sadly, never seen an actual Spitfire fly, but the throb of the Mustang!!!

Any New Pics of the cleaned up FW 190 in process?
I imagine it is slow and a tedious process! Wouldn’t want to take a pressure washer to it! Trying to get the Gunk off without losing the paint (or for that mater-the metal). I also imagine it must smell like low tide something fierce!
Just dip the whole plane in a big vat of Cosmoline-just kind of hard to display that way!
Please find below a link to my revised illustration of the Gelb 16-I have done some tweaks after studying the last batch of photos.

Chris

Might drop an email to Kermit Weeks at Fantasy of Flight. I know he has a Cat in the back in very rough shape he has been collecting parts for. Don’t know if it’s an amphibian or Boat variety, but he often buys whole batches of parts from people liquidating a project. Might be work a shot.
Here is a link to his Collection Page, go up to the top and hit the contact button.

ASW in the North sea. Hours of bad weather and tedium broken up by moments of TERROR! Been chasing threads around the net, started off digging for info on the FW 190 that they pulled up near Bergen and did some illustrations on that bird.
In digging there, I came across a link of the Norwegian Cats and was had to dig deeper. Not much out there that I have seen. A lot on US Navy in the Pacific, totally different world! I thought a 333 Squadron Cat would be an interesting model to tackle, so here I am. Digging for data.
Please find a VERY preliminary preview of the Cat illustration on the board now. Still working on detailing it out, have to build out the sub a bit more and just add more and more detail. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks for your info, and keep it coming.

I was afraid the blisters would be open, it means that much more work! I am digging through the Squadron log book trying to pick an engagement to depict. Fuzzy scans…my eyes hurt! That and just trying to figure out their lingo!
I imagine they flew with them closed but opened them ASAP when trouble was lurking. Was that typically a 50 or twin 303s being a Brit Squadron? Any photos of the twin 303 anyone? I have a good photo of the 50.
Thanks
Chris
Might check with the National Museum of Naval Aviation. I believe they have two on display, one whole and one-cutaway view. They may be able to point you in a direction. Here is a link to their site.

On the same line of thought, I am working on an illustration of a RAF Sq 333 on patrol/ASW attacking a surfaced U-boat. I have a few questions I am seeking info on for historical accuracy.
1 Would the side blisters be open and guns be out for an attack on a surfaced sub-would they bother? We are talking North Sea-COLD!
2 Would they be using wing mounted ordinance? Bombs? Depth Charges?
3 I am depicting Consolidated Catalina Mk.I, FP314 / A “Viking” of 333 Norwegian) Sqn. RAF, Woodhaven, Scotland 1943
Any sites where I can get more info or photos would be a great help.
Thanks
Chris
I have a couple 104s that live a few miles North of me and I hear them time to time on final, very distinctive engine. of course, if I am inside, by the time I get outside they are way out of view. Talk about fast movers! They are a two element show that travels and are working on a third.
Here is their link.

Most of those guys are cheating flying level like that, they need to fly low sideways!
Shot this at a local airshow last month at Albert Whitted Field, St Petesburg FL
