With a tripod or a decent camera shouldn’t have problems with photography at Hendon – I never have when i’ve taken my cheap tripod. Personally there’s nothing of interest at Cosford for me so i’ll always choose Hendon with the pre-1939 aircraft on display, and on top of that Hendon is an extremely important site for the history of aviation in the UK.
As much as people gripe about the RE8 and Albatros, can’t they just be happy that they had the chance, albeit brief, to see them airworthy? No doubt RAFM would have loved to keep them airworthy too but as i’m sure everyone on here is aware, keeping aircraft flying is not cheap, and they could have just as easily brought them into the UK and not flown them at all. Hendon hasn’t had the best of times in recent years but with the new chap in charge it’s rapidly improving, the Watchtower relocation is an absolute gem
Interesting, the photos appear to be taken on the DHL ramp at East Midlands Airport. Looks very posh, presumably R1 or MR4 as I remember the MR2 looking quite a bit different from that
To Duxford with the other large exhibits for a clean up then back to the horrific looking new IWM next year, 1960’s concrete car park style
Have an original DH10 postcard I can scan in, don’t know how big it will blow up to though if that’s any use. May be portraying 60 Squadron Royal Flying Corps next weekend but very much in the pipline
It makes no sense! According to one person on facebook they may have done it in case we were invaded so they could dig them up and fight back?! Think someone’s been watching ‘Wolverines’ too much
I’ll have a The Vintage Aviator Ltd. gift voucher. (one big enough to buy an FE2b or RE8)
Second that, not sure if I could choose between an RE8 or an FE2b night bomber though..
I have a copy of the original diagram for the WW1 version if of use, I can scan it in
As well as the RAF one at Hendon, there’s also the WW2 version at IWM Duxford and Doncaster ‘Aeroventure’ South Yorkshire Air Museum. Also a post-WW2 one in the Middle East. There’s a thread on them here;

Another photo of the pre-WW2 Brooklands example, formerly at Shuttleworth (would look so much better there, especially if they could use it) here;

Thanks all – the buildings are certainly treasures and interesting exhibits in themselves, perhaps my favourite touch is that even the toilets in the Grahame-White Factory (well, at least the men’s) are period, with Thomas Crapper toilets, porcelain sinks and Edwardian style urinal. Hopefully the office space in the Hangar will be utilised too, there’s a lift to go to the other levels so hopefully they get used for office space or public displays.
Personally I don’t mind the current layout of exhibits, if all exhibits from one era are in one spot there’s not quite as much variation, I like wandering around the hangars and stumbling across the Westland Wallace which I forgot they had etc, plus if one building is closed and your main interest is one era, such as mine, it doesn’t mean complete dissapointment.
I read the RAFM’s summary of their ten year plan on their annual report and it mentioned, amongst other developments, a new resturant in a period 1930’s building, possibly the workshops that are between Milestones and the Grahame-White Factory area?
Were the Lynxes in Skyfall really? Looked like (actually pretty dissapointing quality) CGI to me
According to the RAFM twitter feed, there’ll be an announcement regarding the P40 in January
Forgot about the DH9…. that’s a definite i’ll have to go and see!
Well I managed to see the RE8 fly, something I never thought i’d ever, ever see, so that’s going to be hard to beat, but i’m really looking forward to seeing the BBMF’s Hurricane in SEAC markings, and making it to Shuttleworth at least once and hopefully see the Bleriot and Deperdussin airborne for the first time
The local, ex-RAF mayor or similar dignitary called it similar in the past!
IWM already has an RE8 – unique in fact as it’s the only one left with the RAF engine (the Belgian one has a Hispano Suiza engine and looks more like a Bristol Fighter at the front) – it’s just extremely poorly displayed!
