Haven’t got rid of all of them, I frequently see them on the 15 route through Central London, I think they’re used on another route as well. Much prefer the more modern doubledeckers, more comfy and at least they have security cameras so the drivers knows what’s going on upstairs

There was a pretty impressive Wellington with a jet engine in the rear fuselage used by Power Jets at Bruntingthorpe, however i’m a long way from my ‘Aviation in Leicestershire and Rutland’ book so can’t give anymore details. Of course, the post war Vickers Viking and Valetta was based on the Wellington as well, using the undercarriage and wings
Is the Whirlwind being painted in RAF SAR yellow? Would be a shame if so as it’s the only HAR9 in a museum and one of only two still surviving
Looks fantastic, never heard of the film though and neither has IMDB – anyone know anything of ‘American knight’?
Only chance of seeing a Comet flying is of the propeller driven variety – no chance of Canopus flying again
Sounds good to me, just to clarify, you mean the resturant on the side of the Battle of Britain hall? The CGW hangar should definitely be open, so 10am sounds good to me as it means plenty of time to wander around in there before getting chucked out. Finally got another chance to air my Beech Restorations shirt again!
Do you mean the grass area in the square underneath the RAF museum, above Aerodrome road and in between the factory/control tower and railway line? That used to be hangars belonging to Claude Grahame-White but not sure about in later years, need to try and find a decent aerial photo of Hendon throughout the years. As for the police college training site i’m not sure what was there, probably more hangars but not sure as there isn’t a huge amount of space aviation wise between Aerodrome Road and the tube line
Aerodrome Road is closed until January, however I think that’s only in the direction going away from the museum, the way to the museum past the old gatehouse/factory/control tower seems still in use judging by the amount of traffic, so if you go that way to get there you should be alright. Oh, and if anyone doesn’t fancy paying the prices at the resturant, I know the way to a Burger King or the Oriental City building which is a kind of eat-in supermarket which is a very short drive away
I bet it won’t be half as good as this Red Baron film though
Haha, Remoman you don’t happen to be studying Aviation Management at University do you? Just been handed an almost identical assignment for my course
To be honest, there isn’t really a ‘behind the scenes’ at Hendon, as obviously everything is stored at RAF Stafford. Apart from a 1938 tractor there isn’t anything not on public view, in the workshop buildings it’s all preparation for future exhibitions ie big lumps of wood and workshop machines, except for any closed off areas which will be the upper WWI galleries (although the photos on the RAFM closed areas thread show all that’s there, and it’s not much) and the Sunderland area, possibly including the upper BofB gallery
You mean the area that’s being built on? That used to be the site of the Claude Grahame-White factory buildings (as shown in the ‘RAFM Closed Areas’ photos), as for the 1930s buildings, the only buildings left are the 1917 Officers Mess, the ones on the Museum site and the two I posted photos of, the 1917 control tower and the factory building (pre WWI I think). Can’t think of any 1930s looking buildings around.
Have already posted a photo of the RFC crest on the front of the factory building, it’s actually a Claude Grahame-White crest. Here’s an aerial photo of the site showing where the buildings are. By the way, the L shaped building in the ‘RAF Museum site’ square below the Battle of Britain Hall is the police station

Fine by me – just a word of warning, Aerodrome Road (the one which the police college/my house/the control tower and factory building) is on, is currently closed, not sure for how long but I think throughout December, i’ll check on monday
Pretty much all modernised, the staircase and some of the floor at the main entrance seems original but that’s probably it. I’d imagine the rooms etc are all the same size too but obviously re-decorated. The windows are all original too, as I can testify from many a cold night.
Do you mean where the grass airfield was? The council estate which is on the other side of the road of the museum and me is where the airfield was, nothing original there though, and I certainly don’t reccomend investigating! From what I can tell none of the police college is part of the old aerodrome, the only surviving buildings are either on the museum site, the officers mess, and the control tower which is adjoined to the factory building. Don’t know if the upstairs offices of the CGW hangar have been restored either, probably just used for storage, you can’t go up there.
As for the watch office/factory building, the current state of affairs is that they’re negotiating moving them to the museum site, as if the buildings are moved then they can put something like 400 million pounds worth of flats on the site!
