MYSTERIOUS CHINESE SILENCE ON ITS “SPACE FEAT” – CHINA MONITOR: PAPER NO. 10
By B. Raman
……
5. In the past—20 years ago— the then USSR and the US had successfully caused the disintegration of their satellites in orbit as part of an exercise to test and prove their anti-satellite capability. The USSR used a killer satellite for this purpose—that is, it fired another satellite into orbit and maneuvered it into position in order to collide with the target satellite and cause its disintegration. The US did so with a missile fired from one of its aircraft. The USSR had never tried to achieve this with a missile fired from the ground and guided towards a satellite. The US had tried, but reportedly failed.
6. The speculation—based on information from American sources— is that the Chinese caused the destruction through a missile fired and guided from the ground— a feat, which no other country has so far achieved. If true, it speaks highly of the Chinese scientific capability. How did the Americans come to this conclusion? Were they able to detect the firing of the Chinese missile and track it till it destroyed the old weather satellite? Probably so, but they would not admit it lest it gives a clue to others about their detection capability.
7. India has reasons to be concerned—not because the Chinese anti-satellite capability poses a direct threat to India, but because the successful Chinese test, if true, shows how far ahead of India are the Chinese in their scientific and technological capabilities. India is far, far lagging behind the Chinese in almost every field— whether it be economic development or modernisation of its armed forces or its space and missile capabilities or even sports. The Chinese have a very, very lucid understanding of what is in their national interest and are prepared to achieve their objectives whatever be the price—material or diplomatic. They are not bothered about what the US or the rest of the world would think of their action.
8. Once they are convinced that a certain thing is necessary in their national interest, they keep moving towards it like a homing pigeon. Indian leadership, policy-makers and the so-called strategic analysts—who are a bunch of wishful thinkers— lack such a lucid understanding and a steely determination.

17000 tons full load would be about the same size as the largest European LPDs, definitely larger than it “looks”. Personally, my estimate would have been 12000 tons full load, but that admittedly is nothing more than a gut feeling sofar with no facts available to support it.
What’s the source for that estimate and what do they base it on, BTW?
Its an unofficial estimate that’s been around for some time. It looks to be less than 17,000tons. Its supposed to be a medium LPD.
The J-10 is a beautiful fighter.
With in-flight refueling, as shown in Deino’s picture, the J-10 is going to be a long range fighter. Just one H-6 will probably be able to refuel 4-6 J-10s.
I would say that the new LPD is quite small but nevertheless an unwelcome development for Taiwan. I will be interested to see how many China churns out!
Its been estimated at 17,000tons. Not sure if you can call that small. But what does this ship have to do with Taiwan?

China’s space capabilities, both civil and defence- oriented, are rapidly gaining ground on Russia and the United States, the world’s most developed space programmes, Anatoly Perminov, head of Russia’s Federal Space Agency, said Tuesday.
“Today two countries – the US and Russia – maintain space programmes that cover all aspects from peaceful to defence purposes. China is approaching very close,” Perminov said, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
In wide-ranging remarks on Russia’s space programme, Perimov also said the price to travel into the cosmos would rise for space tourists.
“Twenty million to 25 million (US) dollars is what they pay now,” the space agency chief said. “Whether we want it or not, that price, naturally, will rise.”
Perminov did not specify what the expected price increase would be, but said it was explained by the recent fall of the dollar.
Touching on Russia’s answer to the US GPS navigation system or Europe’s Galileo, Perimov said by the end of 2009 Russia expected a full slate of 24 satellites circling the earth, feeding private users geographical coordinates as part of the Glonass system.
“The global navigation system Glonass is actively developing … (President Vladimir Putin) personally tasked not only its development, but its launch. We hope by the end of 2007 there will be 18 satellites, and by the end of 2009, 24 satellites,” Perimov said.
Russia has pledged in recent weeks to put 2 billion rubles (80 million dollars) toward Glonass, and three satellites are scheduled to enter orbit from Baikonur Cosmodrome, in northern Kazakhstan, on December 26.
Chengdu’s twin engined development of the J-10 and Chengdu’s 5th generation fighter are probably 2 different projects.
Chengdu may be developing a twin engined version of the J-10 to compete for PLAN’s naval fighter requirement for aircraft carriers.
But Chengdu is likely to have a different and completely new design to compete for PLAAF’s 5th generation fighter requirement.
The J-10’s successor is probably a brand new design and not based on the J-10.
John, how do you know ChiCumRen is even Chinese?
The Beidou satellite navigation system will have 35 satellites in orbit and have global coverage.
The Beidou system will have 2 tiers. One tier will be for commercial and civilian use. Another tier will be for authorised users only.
From what the Russians have been saying at Zhuhai it seems that currently China is not seeking Russian help in building aircraft carriers.
The Taiwanese media has reported that China has designed a large indigenous aircraft carrier of about 80,000tons. But its not clear how reliable this report is.
The Russian media has reported that China is going to build 3 aircraft carriers within 10 years. Again, its not clear how reliable this report is.
fltgshdw,
That Combat Aircraft article is BS. How can you take such articles seriously?
To put this in perspective, it appears that at this point total J-10 production is greater than total Eurofighter production?
That is a sad commentary on European defense planning and funding.
Yes, but the J-10 is the effort of one nation, China. Whereas the Eurofighter is multinational effort with different nation partners having different ideas and demands.
However, its nice to see all 4 current delta-canard fighters flying and successful. J-10, Eurofighter, Rafale, Gripen.
Take these Russian claims with a big bag of salt.
In the past there have been instances where some Russian sources have pretended to know more about Chinese military projects than they really do. And these Russians have been known to claim credit which they do not deserve. These Russians want to make it seem like they are responsible for China’s achievements.
China is a rising competitor in the world military market and these Russians have a self interest in putting out their propaganda about Chinese projects.
Of course Russian firms are involved in some Chinese projects. A good example is the L-15.
Yakovlev OKB has been honest is saying that they did nothing more than design consultancy at the preliminary stage of the L-15 project.
And Yakovlev’s consultancy has been confirmed by Chinese sources so we know its true. In fact Hongdu Aviation Company has openly spoken to the Chinese media about Yakovlev’s involvement.
Sure they are different in the details, but they are clearly from the same bloodline. You’d be amazed how much uncredited work ‘consultants’ do on things.
Read the Yalovlev OKB website again.
Yakovlev OKB has already said that they acted as design consultant and that the L-15 is a Chinese plane. Perhaps you know more than Yakovlev OKB about their own work?
The L-15 is not a copy of the Yak-130. There is some resemblance because Yakovlev OKB was a consultant during the design stage.
Hongdu Aviation Company had originally designed the L-15 but wanted to make improvements to the design. Hongdu hired Yakovlev OKB to come in and help make changes and improvements to the original design. That’s where the Yakovlev input came in.
Yakovlev OKB has made it clear that the L-15 is a Chinese plane.
The L-15 is a high-end advanced supersonic trainer. Its closest rival is probably the Korean-American T-50.
