Hadnt thought about Neil as possible for the zlin,I dont recall ever seeing a NW zlin display – but I saw a couple of N Browning displays in the late 60’s and thought the flying ‘style’ may have been similar, anyway here is a slightly larger version of the vid clip and at approx 9.12 onwards you can just about make out the zlin colour scheme…

Not conclusive – but here is a pic of G-ASIM which i believe was Neville Brownings a/c,looks similar colour but not enough contrast on video clip to see if the displaying a/c had the wing stripes !

I seem to remember seeing Neil Williams flying a Zlin, possibly at Cranfield ’72/73, and he flew most of the display inverted (that’s why I thought it was NW in the clip)
Didn’t he have a near disaster in a Zlin when a lower wing bolt failed and the wing flapped up, forcing him to approach with the plane inverted and flick it over at the last second before crash landing, or am I thinking of someone else?

Quite likely the 504 was being flown by Dickie Martin, who flew for Avro ( at Woodford) and was a Shuttleworth pilot.

”During his time at Glosters, Martin masterminded a project by the apprentices to restore to flying condition one of the company’s pre-war Gladiator bi-planes. This was presented to the Shuttleworth Trust, which Martin had joined in 1948, and for many years he flew the aircraft at air shows. He was a member of the executive committee, and gave 42 years service to the trust, displaying many of the vintage aircraft in the collection. He would often land his airliner full of holidaymakers at Luton Airport, then be found, shortly afterwards, flying one of the Trust’s First World War fighters at the nearby Old Warden airfield.”

I Thought that ir might have been Allen Wheeler. I seem to remember that routine with the 504 from late 60’s Old Warden.
And Perhaps Neil Williams flying the Zlin?
Great video though, Thanks for posting it.

Thank you, Twin Otter and Newforest. That’s the one. Why didn’t my google search take me to that website!

I’ve just bought what I had hoped was a full run of the magazine, but I now realise that I’ve bought all except the very last issue! So if there’s anyone with a copy of issue 36 for sale, I’d be glad to hear from you. Alternatively we could do a swop as I have duplicates of many issues.

I had a subscription to Vintage Aircraft Mag and for some reason I did not recieve No 36.
If there is anyone out there with a cache of # 36’s I have a couple of duplicates to trade.

Could it have been part of the Royal Naval FlyingTraining Flight that was based there?
Also an RAF Balliol T.2 crashed while trying to perform an emergency landing at Roborough, c 1956.

Thanks. I have a photo of a Sea Balliol taken circa 1957 at Roborough. I can’t read the serial #, but it definitely has a hook. it was kept in a small hangar on the east side of the airfield that was used by the RN. At one time there was an Oxford (also with Royal Navy markings) and a couple of Prentices based there. These seemed to have been replaced by Tiger Moths ?? and later still by Chipmunks. By then I think this unit was attached to RNEC Mannadon. I think the facility was used much later by Royal Marine helicopters.

I don’t remember hearing of a Balliol crashing at Roborough though. A Devon went through the hedge on the North side in the late 50’s though.

    Gone I’m afraid.

Plymouth is without an Airport. Shut 24.12.2011

    Really Sad, after 85 years!
I took my first ever flight from an all grass Roborough in Anson VM 341 on June 3rd 1956 as an Air cadet. My last flight from Roborough, 1999, in a Brymon dash 8, and so many happy memories in between.
Does anyone remember the Sea Balliol that flew out of there in the late 50’s? Not sure what it was doing there but what a thrill!

Good luck with the films Baz, I will look out for them

Check the date of the post! In early 2005 the storage area was very cramped, as the new storage building hadn’t opened.

Sorry! I didn’t notice the date of the original post. The new storage building at the Canadian Aviation museum opened in April 2005.

    Libs in the UK.

Dave, you may like to note that there’s a Liberator in the RAF Museum collection at Cosford; it’s an ex-Indian machine. Another sister ship staged through Duxford on it’s way to the USA from India and ‘stuck’ at DX for a while in the 70s. There are photos of this machine floating about at DX, but it was only ever a visitor, not an exhibit! I think it’s the example owned by Kermit now. The Canadians have another ex-Indian Lib at Rockliffe in Canada. That’s ‘in store’ (jammed in to the storage area) and in Costal Command colours. Have a look at the Canadian Aviation Museum website for more. http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca

    Cheers

    Ahem!

For “in store” (jammed in to the storage area), read ‘installed in restored condition in a custom built, climate controlled storage building and available for public viewing on most days’

I’m just looking at the complete (with wiring loom) control grip from Scimitar XD218 which was salvaged by a late friend of mine who ‘was sent to rob it for F Shop’……sadly the pitot tube he also ‘had to get’ couldn’t be secreted apon his person sufficiently well whilst leaving the Yard on a pushbike, so it eventually got scrapped.

    Hi Lee:

Sorry for the thread drift… I worked on Scimitars in F shop for about 6 months as part of the 4th year apprentice shop tour, and I still have the nightmares! Being covered in the gunk that was used to seal the rivets in the wet wing tanks was just one. But, like the S4 Wyvern the Scimitar was a superb looking beast.

Roborough – After a quick check the only one i can find that ended up being scrapped at Fleetlands was TF.2 VW876. This came from Farnborough after a wheels up landing there.

    Thanks Wyvernfan
I wish I’d noted all of this stuff at the time. There were some interesting relics in the scrapyard at that time including one of the Blackburn prototypes that competed with the Gannet, and a couple of long surviving Sea hornets.

Thanks. The TF.1 identity has already been pretty much nailed down. Its the pictured TF.2 that has me scratching my head, as none of them are noted as ending their days at Gosport. My hunch is its either VW871 or VW878 (although both are logged as apparently ending their days elsewhere!)

I have a vague recollection of there being an early Wyvern in the Scrapyard at RNAY Fleetlands around 1958. Definitely not an S4, there were a few of them still trickling through the shops as late as 1958. The scrapyard was I believe cleared in the early ’60s to make room for the Helipad (or possibly the new apprentice training centre).
I worked at Fleetlands from 1957 – 63 and I think the yard had been cleared by the time I left.
Does anyone know if Fleetlands will survive the current round of defence cuts?

    Regards
    Bill
