Thanks. The TF.1 identity has already been pretty much nailed down. Its the pictured TF.2 that has me scratching my head, as none of them are noted as ending their days at Gosport. My hunch is its either VW871 or VW878 (although both are logged as apparently ending their days elsewhere!)
I have a vague recollection of there being an early Wyvern in the Scrapyard at RNAY Fleetlands around 1958. Definitely not an S4, there were a few of them still trickling through the shops as late as 1958. The scrapyard was I believe cleared in the early ’60s to make room for the Helipad (or possibly the new apprentice training centre).
I worked at Fleetlands from 1957 – 63 and I think the yard had been cleared by the time I left.
Does anyone know if Fleetlands will survive the current round of defence cuts?

G’Day Bob,
I have had a quick look and the only reference to the Monoplane I can find is for the steel tube frame, which is also used for the Mk IV M, VI M Sports and Mk V. Mind you, I have found two iterations of the steel frame, basically in the way the forward end of the frame is braced.
Going by what I have seen so far though, the fuselage, tail group and Hermes engine installation are all common to both the biplane and monoplane Avians. One would need to come up with wing drawings, main undercarriage and the bracing of these two items.Best regards,
Paul
Hi Paul:
Sorry to bend this thread a little. I promised to send a pic of the Canda Av museum’s Avian in their storage building. See attached. Also I’ve attached a Pic of the museum- restored Travelair 2000. Both of these are now on display in the main building along with the long-time stored Cirrus Moth.
Regards
Bill
I agree:
Saphire engined Hunters seem to be a rare breed these days. I well remember them screaming over Portsmouth harbour (presumably from Tangmere) in the late 50’s.
Wasn’t there an F5 on display in the RAFM when it first opened in 1972? Where is it now?
Following on from the discussion of questionable types in the RAFM, wasn’t there once a Miles Hawk Major in the collection? I seem to remember seeing it at Henlow in the late 60’s.
I wonder what happened to it.
Avians in Canada
Hi All:
Avro Avian
I’m sure you know that there are at least 2 in Canada. Both Mk1VM’s with Genet Majors & part of a batch of about 30 assembled in Ottawa in the early ’30’s for the RCAF, although most of them quickly moved to some of the newly forming flying clubs.
One is with the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa and was recently restored by the Reynolds Museum, Wetaskawin, Alberta, who has the 2nd one on display.
They may well be able to help.
Sorry, I tried to attach a recent pic of the Ottawa on but the technology defeated me!
