Interesting story and good pics. We don’t hear much about the RAF’s war in the Far East and even less about the FEAF Liberators.
Thanks for posting Matt

I seem to recall someone telling me that the runway at Shearwater was now closed. They fly only ageing Sea-kings from there. If this is true then there would be no possibility of the Firefly flying anyway. Still a very sad story.

I’m intrigued as to how an aeroplane can be rarer than one with a single surviving example.
If I recall correctly the original 1903 Wright flyer was moved to Europe in the 1920’s and exhibited at the Science museum, London for many years, then returned to the USA in the 1940’s. It doesn’t get much rarer or historically signifant than the Wright flyer, and presumable the move was managed successfully.

What a great looking plane! Well worth all the care that is obviously being lavished on her. Congratulations to all involved.

I doubt that a Tristar will find its way into preservation
I seem to remember an interview with the current Director of the RAFM in a magazine a few years ago in which it was stated that Cosford would get a VC-10, Tristar and Hercules. Well, they got the Hercules.

Regarding the Suez operation: look for a book called “Air War over Suez” by Brian Cull. The book has several photos of French naval aircraft including Corsairs of 14-F and 15-F from the carrier Aromanches. Unfortunately the appendices does not cover the French naval aircraft but if you trawl through the text there are many references to individual aircraft & pilots. There is also a picture of Lt Lancrenon who was shot down by AA fire and killed or subsequenly died. The book is a good read anyway.
Was scrapped 08/1971. There is a picture of it on our sister site UK Serials:
Thanks Mark & David. I have an almost identical B&W shot that I took in 69 or 70.

Any of those single seaters Bruce?
Talking of Single-seat Vampires and 936 ATC at Hertford, does anyone recall an FB-5 at that location in the late ’60’s early 70’s? I believe it was VV542. I used to pass it traveling between Southend and Stevenage. Then it disappeared. What happened to it? Single-seaters were getting scarce even then.

Interesting video. I was not able to get the sound up so maybe this was mentioned. Apart from the first few weeks PR503 spent all of its life with 803/883 sqns Royal Canadian Navy, part of that time on HMCS Warrior. The ‘Canadian’ bit seems to be missing from the stenciling under the tail.
However it is a beautiful restoration and a credit to the restorers.

Looks like an interesting project Benoit. Didn’t one fly in the UK in the KIngs Cup air races about 1937? If you send me a PM I can give you a couple of names of guys who might be able to help.

Sad news indeed. I don’t have a picture to contribute but I do remember him at OW in the early 70’s flying the Gladiator and, I think, the Tomtit.
RIP John

David:
A very big ‘Thankyou’ for the wonderful pictures from the Old Warden airshows. It was almost like being there and brought back many happy memories (late 60’s early 70’s). Looking forward to your future pics from OW and Duxford.
Best regards
Bill
Great pictures. OW looks lovely in the morning sunshine.
