The NT were approached a while a ago and were very supportive of the event, it meant that there was 900m from end to end but it also meant that the east end hedge was removed making the approach slightly better for the Spitfire. The organisers did a terrific job and were rewarded with some good weather and a big crowd for a remote part of Devon! I hope the Charities did well. Two terrific displays by the Hurricane (Keith Dennison) and the Spitfire (Anthony Hodgson). There is a short clip on youtube – love the sound! Due to the strong crosswind and narrow runway Anthony elected to land at Plymouth after the display as any deviation from the runway would of caused a nose over in the soft ground.
The event was graced by a number of veteran pilots including a 41 Sqd veteran who flew from Bolt Head in 1944. We were fortunate to be staying at the Cottage Hotel at Hope Cove which was used as the Officers Mess and still had the wooden panels above the fireplace with the names of aircrew scratched into it! There was also a number of photographs of the aircrews at Bolt Head and Hope Cove so it made for an interesting evening.
hmmmm, 1000 days. The most recent similar re-build of a Spitfire outside of Duxford took a lot longer than 1000 days and that was well financed.
But however long it takes it is always nice to see another of these iconic planes take to the air.
Just a thought though after looking at the web site, they do know that there is another “Welsh” Spitfire dont they?
Hear Hear – a well deserved award!
Radarsdesk – your 2nd picture with the crankcase top cover on the floor – agony as I need one of them like now for my Chippy engine due to hair line cracks in the current one!!
Hmmm PT462 has a Packard Merlin.
Nice shots Dean F, believe it was very hot and sunny for most of the day, errrr um Chippie passenger looks nice! 😉
Thank you for your kind words Welsh_HTE, display was for the NE Wales Veterns Assoc. who were holding an event at the Ffrith Beach venue. Spitfire was the local one PT462 owned by Mr Anothony Hodgson.
Peter Woods may still have some suitable wings for a static.
Hope its not the same one that lasted around 10 seconds at Cosford!
Was there, on the flight line watching as he nearly took the tail off my aeroplane. Im sure PPS and Mr Vacher would of been thrilled to see a red glider sitting on top of their machines had his manovoure been some 3ft lower.
It was a beutifull display with a difficult low cloudbase but that last roll was not required given the height he was at, the roll would of been a good finish but needed in this case I believe a bit more margin of safety. However no harm done, no life was lost, no damage to machines and if any lesson can be learned then its a bonus – onwards and upwards.
If the matter was deemed by the FDD to warrent comment then Im sure it was given, matter closed as far as Im concerned.
There was a lot of sucking of teeth (and some expletives) on the flight line when that red glider came up behind the static aircraft!! The picture shows he still has around 135 deg of roll left to complete with the Stbd wing yet to go past mother earth. It was close, the wing tip was certainly below the height of the tailplanes of the static line up as it went around – eeeek. I feel there must surely of been a chat with the FDD after.
There were hundreds of lenses on that flight line! Who’s hidding the pics then?
Fantastic take off but unfortunetly not problem free. Stbd lead ucarridge door wouldnt close even after a recycle so planned flight test looks like it will have to be scrubbed with Vulcan returning early to Brunters. I suspect a knock on effect as crew availability to complete required flight testing may be a issue.
Still an amazing site after all these years.
Scrubbed again. Think someone needs to grab the reins of the organisation up there, to many promises with no substance behind them.
There was a show after the Harrier incident which I to was at. The following year we couldnt get to the event due to bad weather we we were which was a pain as we were only 20mins flying time away. Believe the weather was a problem at the event as well and the club suffered with low attendance and this put a hole in the clubs finances.
As far as Im aware there are no plans for future show due as usual to a variety of reasons eg number of people required to actually commit long term to organise and put on the event, yes Insurance costs, you wouldnt believe how much the police want to organise traffic flow and “police” this basically regional airshow and all the other costs associated with a show and thats before you start looking at aircraft costs!
