There was a show after the Harrier incident which I to was at. The following year we couldnt get to the event due to bad weather we we were which was a pain as we were only 20mins flying time away. Believe the weather was a problem at the event as well and the club suffered with low attendance and this put a hole in the clubs finances.
As far as Im aware there are no plans for future show due as usual to a variety of reasons eg number of people required to actually commit long term to organise and put on the event, yes Insurance costs, you wouldnt believe how much the police want to organise traffic flow and “ploice” this basically regional airshow and all the other costs associated with a show and thats before you start looking at aircraft costs!
Retro Road and Track (who I believe have a contract for overhauling the BBMF Merlins and Griffons) and Maurice Hammond are the two in the UK that Im aware of.
Believe the main person behind Legends doesnt like 2 seat Spitfires. Shame really as there have been a few odd things that have turned up at Legends over the years e.g. the wing walkers in 2007 – surely if their seen as a fit act to appear then 4 x 2 seat spitfires in a formationtailchase must be rated. (after all they were original produced during the war, some with proven combat history)
As Ive said before, its an opportunity to see something that hasnt been seen before (well in recent times anyway!).
Wouldnt have thought there were to many ‘virtually factory freash’ Mk9s around by 19456
With the numbers of Mk9s around the Govt at the time were giving them away so Vickers proberbly got them very cheap which then equals ‘cost effective’.
Spitfire in 2nd picture is PT462, a late addition to the flying programme.
help! I couldnt openview any of the pic’s – any (polite) suggestions?
Just to confirm that Paul has sadly passed away after a long battle with ill health earlier this year. Just to echo the comment of an earlier post, Paul was an absolute gentleman in all respects and I remember the day he managed to persuade a 2 seat Spitfire owner to give him a flight to experiance a long held dream of his. After the flight he just sat in the aircraft alone for some 15 mins after taking it all in – shortly afterwards he became the owner of SM520.
He asked that SM520 be completed and to fly which I understand is what will happen.
There is a Mk9 single seat to two conversion near completion down near the south coast with MT818 coming back to the UK. However Im not sure how long that one will take to be back in the air.
Intrested to here of any other Tr’s that may be under restoration.
Sorry Moocher but I think you’ll find its actually show organisers having the will, 2 of the 4 are based at Duxford and I know the other 2 would be happy to attend.
Who knows by 2008 there could be 6!
The Sept 2006 Duxford show had all four currently airworthy 2 seat Spitfires attend. Unfortunetly the Saturday saw such high cross winds that the final Spitfire balbo was scrubbed and on the Sunday PT462 was unable to take off at the time of the display so only 3 flew (IAC161 as was, MJ627 and ML407) within the main formation.
Be nice if someone at Duxford could have another go at getting all 4 in the air together as a 4 ship – Hint! It would still be a first.
believe went tech during display at Newtonards. maybee at Aldergrove some time.
Not sure that Peter T would classify himself as an ‘historic’!
Worry about there being one in 2008.
Oh no! What other forum – give us a clue, Ive checked 4 others and no mention of Walney.
Whats the plan, any ideas? Are they to keep and operate the five – VERY expensive with little income (theres at least 6 Spitfires for every airshow slot now) or are they (more likely) for sale – difficult market, for example where would Historic Flying be if Tom Blair hadnt come along.
