Well it is there still – a what a superb restoration, I dread to think of the time and cost thats gone into it. The metal work looks to of been completed to a good standard (mind you Im no engineer) and the colour scheme made it look just fabulously evil. Its got fly me written all over it.
Unfortunetly there was no one around at the time to ask as I believe the owner/engineers only come in at the weekends.
Dont know abouts its history – can someone update me? All I can see is that its an E model with the Werk No 1342
If this aircraft is going out to the States then its a true loss to the UK, the thought of seeing it with the BBMF Mk2 and maybee Peter Vachers Hurrricane would be very thought provoking.

I know of two people with Merlins displayed inside their houses, the one I have access to view was in excellent condition having only been factory test run, crated and left at a NA airport for 50 years or so. It still took a LOT of cleaning and tarting up. The next problem is a stand and then moving a VERY heavy piece of metal into your house – do not try this on floorboards!
Some careful mood lighting, a plaque to detail the history and you have a very nice conversation piece.

Doesn’t say much for this country (even after years of this politically correct government) that an American citizen took it on himself to assist the Mitchells – shame.
The very least should be a statue to RJ at the Southampton Airport.

On site at Wattisham next week – have to survey all the hangers and several other buildings, ATC, HAS’s etc, god what a bind! I’ll see whats about but there wont be any pics due to MOD rules and it seems, respecting the owners wishes.

I expect the extreamly high insurrance costs (and consistantly going upwards)plus all the other multiple cost things as well as huge ammounts of time for the indviduals involved may of proved to much. Be aware out there that airshows, especially the small/mid sized ones are under threat of extinction thru insurance costs. Perhaps someone involved with Raydon may be able to clarify.

It was certainly white or silver and the engine note was a deep, deep rumble

Suspect the Spitfire will be PT462 and the P51 will proberbly be Jumping Jacues, IAC 161 may be a possibility but it would depend very much on costs and availability.
The line up at this stage looks tremendous and I hope that at both Newtonards and Enniskillen the public support the huge effort put into getting these airshows back on the calander.

With regard to the Salthill Airshow its very much a case of costs to get a Spitfire over there, I dont know much about Bray International Airshow.

Top surface grey on PL344 looks almost identical to PT462’s grey which was painted in the US – errr, why do they do it?

mcfier, I saw this aircraft too. I viewed it from Rednal after landing there for a visit. Two of us heard the heavy rumble of an aircraft to the North and spotted a large bi-plane travelling very slowly. Our belief was that it was single engined and that it was an AN-2. However we couldnt think where an AN-2 may of come from as Im not aware of any based locally (apart from the wrecks at Hawarden.

    Anyone else get a look?

Believe the organiser is trying to put together one of the best content airshows seen in NI for many years, hope all you people turn out to support the shows. As soon as all the RAF stuff is confirmed then private display aircraft can be confirmed – watch this space.

Re Beech C45 Southern Comfort – the last (unconfirmed) I heard she had some engine problems and upon sorting that out she would be up for sale.

Panther, you could be lucky this year. I believe that there MAY be an airshow at Newtonards (subject to the usual finance – primary issue, insurance, etc etc) around mid May – watch out for any press details nearer the time. You may just hear one, possibly two Merlins cutting through the Irish air.
    Keep your fingers crossed.

Nighthawk – times of the tour (& costs!! – joking) will be forward to you nearer the date.

I gather the organisers are still to finalise a few more private display items as well as trying to get decisions made on what/any RAF/USAF participation, at the moment its potentially looking like quite a show. Its great to see people in the North West putting time & effort into putting on a show as we have so few up here these days.
