To begin with, it’s not a question of how we would pay, but if we really want them.

You are dead wrong in your assumption that an anti-air system is a strictly defensive system. Perhaps, if you are a peaceful nation that minds its own business, clearly NOT the case with Turkey.

It’s the same with anti-ballistic capability really, which is why ICBM interceptors were restricted in the first place. If you come to a point that you believe that your enemy cannot attack you to retaliate, then you can safely attack them. In the case of S400, if you can sanitize a significant part of your airspace then you can use overwhelming land superiority with impunity. Game over.

There was a time during the previous decade, when financial conditions were totally different, that there was actually some discussion about Greece acquiring on small harrier-compatible aircraft carrier. Just discussed, not officially examined with RfI etc. The rejection of the concept was unanimous because of one very simple reason (leaving aside other issues). This ship would had to operate in a theater of operations so heavily infested with all sorts of antiship weapons, that effectively it could simply not be safe to operate and at best, it would be restricted to port. How does Turkey plan to bypass this… problem?

In my experience, an educated and respected member that knows what he’s talking about, is old enough, speaks nice and seriously, will not give any guarantee that he will make an effective forum moderator. In many cases, moderating, being extremely tiresome and consuming job, will prevent those members from normal participation, thus negating their role as respected members. I think the best moderator is he that can be trusted to be a responsible discussion coordinator, has sufficient time to be on watch and answer messages and of course will not overstep his authority depending on his views on a subject.

As simple as it may sound, I have come to discover that these are very rare qualities. Being a respected member AND possessing those qualities at the same time is even more rare.

Anything that is not currently in production, or at the very least, a proven product, will take years after years of designing, development, integration, testing and then after failures, more integration and more testing. And money.

What you are describing is in effect a brand new plane which will need to be tested and certified for… just about everything all over again. I don’t think Japan will have a use for such a plane to be delivered in 20 years. (not exaggerating: compare F-22/F-35 first flight with their IOC).

The navy has a long history of despising air force projects. Only way to tolerate with one, if it’s outstanding beyond compare :p (or if the money is good)

But they carry the same weapons. As for kinematics, without 2D thrust vectoring engines as in F-22, I think there is little space for improvement.

Why would there be any difference between what happens to a SHar or Super Etendard pilot and a Naval LCA pilot if the engine flames out? In all these cases, the pilot would eject.

The photo in question is a land based ramp for training, not an actual carrier, isn’t it? So the photo angle and the thought that in case of mishap it would crash rather than splash, is presumably, scary 🙂

Then the same thing happens, which would have happened to Sea Harrier and Super Etendard pilots.

Except they would fall in the water :p I think a splash sound is better than an explosion sound :p
