The best performer is the G-222 of the experimental group of italian ai force (AMI)…
Seeing when it does a short landing is incredible (besides one time the gear collapsed on a show…).
Now i don’t know if they will receive a c-27j or they will mantain in service a g222….
It’s happened a lot of time
In 97 in a big exercitation the Da Vinci a Sauro class (italian navy), have “sunk” an Us carrier, few hours later a french one and the day after an lph.
I found only the photo of the turret painted with tons score.
The modus operandi of italian navy changed with the years after cold war…
V. Veneto had a role of aaw and asw (6 helicopter onboard) G. Garibaldi in his first years had it’s role as asw platform (18/16 sh3d) then the politician put the money to buy harriers and started to become a real carrier (first “war” operantion in somalia).
In cold war the italian navy was focused on keep clear the med from russian sub and to protect the italian shipping against fast attack craft in the adriatic, but since the iran/iraqi war from the 1980 italian navy started to be present in every part of the world to defend it’ interest.
V. Veneto and G. Garibaldi stayed for many years in service togheter in reality Cavour must be V. Veneto substitute but money were a real a problems in 90’s as today…
The first place to go for your research is the historic almanac of the italian navy
almanac
capitani romani
The pics are not the best…
Some other pics are on another site
If you need drawings to build a model the main font is the ANB (a group of modelers) but for this you have to pay (but most of the drawings are original shipyard one’s i’ve hard that for some classes of small boat the informartion you can find are so precise that you can build one real ship….)
On this forum there is an old post with some good photo and a complete hystory in italian of course….
I think that for good photo i will have to search on old books, if i will find something i will post it….
Incredible they are still capable to operate a fiat 6614 after so many years (the armored vehicle in the second photo), italy sold (or make a gift i don’t remember) some in the 80’s (and a lot of other things m-47, trucks and also airplanes lìke g222 sf260, and a lot of money wasted in stupid projects of development never accomplished)….
Yes the proposal was called the OTOMATIC it was a 76 gun (automatic reload 80rds/min) with an independent radar on an OF-40 chassis (italian version of leo1 for middle east export). The system was part of a bigger system in wich 1 otomatic was the chief of a group of four sidam (a quad 25mm on m 113 chassis).
Only 1 prototype of the Otomatic was built while 225 sidam were produced they have only optical aiming system and now they are surplus so if u want to buy someone……
Another use of the 76/62 oto (manual reoload) was on the rooikat wheeled tank.
In fact how many croatian mig 21 are in flight conditions??
I’ve spent 2 week of my holydays in pula (all the mig 21 are based here that’s right??) and for these 2 week every morning a mig 21 flight over my hotel (only one flight a day!!!) and for the 2 week the only mig 21 i see was the promotional one with white and red squares….
These let me think that the others are probably hangar queens….
The SR version (superapido=super fast) has a fire rate of 120 rds/min, but the most interesting thing is the new shell DAVIDE/Strales that is a guided round, it’s a undercalibered shell (42mm) the concept is similar to an apfds with the exception of the guide system and the warhead of 2.5kg.
The shell is able to destroy manouvering anti-ship missile of any kind, at 5km of distance from the ship is still capable of make 20-25g manouveres to intercept.
In the test most of the shells arrive to a direct hit.
In near future every italian ship will have this kind of inner layer defence system.
Because in italy we considere the 76 as an anti missile system despite all the foreign customers use hit only for general purpose.
Av 8-B of course…..
Is the only fighter of italian navy….. 😀
on the deck
To swerve- In fact there are the possibilieties that the new lpd will be a simil BPE and so the garibaldi will be in a first time associateded and then substituded by this ship (an build in future 1 or 2 small lpd).
But part of the navy push to build now a conventional lpd (10/12000 ton rotterdam like) in order to convince in a future (2015??) to build another carrier vessel to take the place of Garibaldi.
At the moment as i alreday said there is nothing decided , the projects are still unknown but i’m sure that fincantieri is prepared for every kind of occurencies..
To Andersen- In vectosite http://www.vectorsite.net/avgripen.html i read that saab made some simulation of a conventional gripen landing on a cv without problems (of course in pc enviroment)!!!!, i’m a supporter too of gripen it could be the A4 and the F5 of the present day and of the future but it will be troublesome to reach such results…
At the moment there is nothing decided for the new lpd/lph, for the end of 2006 or in the first month of 2007 a decision will be taken (but money are a real problem despite it seem that the new defece minister will correct the trend), i hadn’t seen any pics but voices claims different projects:
– a 10000/12000 ton lpd with only 2/3 rear spot for heli;
– a bigger 16000 ton flat-top lpd (like a bigger san giorgio) with more heli capabilities;
– a 20000 ton or more with also harrier capabilities;
all project must transport 900/1000 marines and their equipment and vehicles.
I think that in october fincantieri will show some concept at Euronaval so we have to wait.
Thanks shiplover, i’ve read the story in bharat-rakshak few month ago, in italy we are very proud of the design of ads………
But on the other hand we feel disappointed that this wonderful ship is bigger than cavour, more space on that kind of ship is always welcome and steel is cheap.
We have a wonderful stovl carrier with a full complex of command&control system but is limited to only 20 helo and harrier/jsf
I’ve followed this forum for a while and i found the 3d really interesting so this is my first post.
The ads is based not on an old fench design but on an enalrged version of italian cavour jsf carrier.
Indeed most of the engeenering is done by Fincantieri that have responsabilty also on the propulsion system…
