    Yeah and forgoe the F-35C Joint Strike fighter, which will provide a long ranged strike capability, the A-6 could only dream of.

    Maybe A-6 could dream of as it could carry a greater payload for a greater distance. :diablo:

    anyone have additional info on this?

    Australian defence minister said on Tv that concerns over the F35’s ability to meet Australia’s needs was the reason he had no signed up fully yet to the F35. He said he was keeping all options open at this point and that if it didn’t meet the requirements Australia would not go ahead with the purchase.

    Beeing away for awhile, I´ve got a idiotic question: I remember reading somewhere russians had an antiradiation missile that could seek AWACS emissions, it either could shot it down or force it to disengage and run for cover. Is this thing the KS-172? How effective would it be?

    Well, within visual range being big is a flaw. As soon as a plane as big as an F-22 turns everybody would see it.

    The Brazilian Air Force officaly stated that the P-99 is not being developed as a maritime patrol plane. I guess they don´t want years untill it could be adaptded to this role and, as already mencioned, even then the plane won´t have the same endurance and payload as the good old trusty Orion.

    The more I read, the more confused I get. I´m just plain stupid or the Super Hornet isn´t on par with the Tomcat in the interceptor role? AFAIK the Tomcat has more endurance and longer range weapons systems (Phoenix, AWG-9 and TCS) than the F-18. It´s contemporary brother, the F-15, will still be in service for a loooong time after F-14s retirement.

    Well, the threats changed since the end of USSR but the move to an all F-18 fleet puzzles me, after all, US Navy is not that short on resources…

    Btw, in local press BAF is wanting more advanced types besides Rafale, namely the Typhoon and the JSF. “He who wants everything gets nothing”. Let´s hope it´s just rumours, or some daydreaming from the top brass.

    Sounds very reasonable.

    Rafale is a good plane, although rather expensive, maybe to expensive, AFAIK around US$ 70/80 million each.

    Twelve fighters plus all the stuff would go far above US$ 1 billion. I don´t see how negotiations can go any further.

    It seems almost if Brasil is the only country buying combat planes right now 😀 .

    Well, lets assume FX is dead on the short term. Now there are talks about an “gap filler”. AFAIK the offers so far are:

    a – Kfir 2000 from Israel;
    b – Cheetah from South Africa;
    c – Mirage 2000C from Emirades;
    d – F16A from Belgium/Holland (with AIM-120C)
    e – Su-27 (new) from Russian stocks.
    f – F5, updating them to F-5Br standards by Embraer/Elbit.

    Well, lots of controversy about FX, but I would like to know what do you think about those planes listed as probables. My take:

    1 – F-5Br as a simply “gap filler”, cheap and FAB is already used to it;
    2 – Mirage 2000C, the second simpliest solution, obvious reasons;
    3 – As a step to the future FX (FFX? 😀 ), go for the real thing and get the Sukhoy, no matter which a/c FFX would be, FAB would get a lot of experience in managing such large, powerfull birds (this is, unfortunatelly, the least likely solution).

    The F-16 offer has, it seems, US support, so the F-18 is not being seriously considered.

    About the FX program I just want to remember that Brasil is a huge country, larger than the entire Western Europe and FAB already have enough little, short-legged aircraft.

    Well, the FX has been canceled. FAB announced it because, right now, the aircraft would be “obsolete “. Which, I think, is a poor excuse for financial and political reasons.

    So if even the most important aircraft procurement since the Mirage III (30 years ago) is called off what else can Navy expect? Little I´m afraid.
