Well I think 150% etc are arbitrary numbers that aren’t based in any sort of reality unless someone can prove otherwirse (it doesn’t sound right though).
As for Italy, I’m sure it’s different with all the new members, but as I understood what I read it was to mean the ‘long standing’ members of NATO. Which is why the AMI is hemmoraging pilots to civil aviation to the point of crisis.
I thought it was a fairly obvious shot at the west. You state that what a country is doing within its own borders is wrong (in your opinion) and then you bomb them over a period of several months till they meet your demands. Now they have to suck up to you to not become isolated and ignored.
Gary my friend, and trust me when I say that you seem to have ‘me’ all wrong with regards to NATO involvement in the former YU.
But what makes you think for a second that NATO and Europe in general would tolerate the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the middle of the Balkans?
No one has to “suck up” to America, but becoming belligerent to the point of utter madness is not gonna do any Serb any good in the long run.
I am not suggesting such weapons should be used to start anything. Just that they are cheap enough and would make NATO think twice about interfering in the business of others.
So will you ensure that some crackpot wouldn’t use such things?
The political climate is unstable as it is in Serbia and indeed the entire former Yugoslav republics. The military balance is also fluid.
And who would stop Albania from procuring such weapons? And if Albania get’s them in response to Serb’s getting them who would stop Greece and then Turkey from getting them, and so on and so on.
No no no, such talk is counter-productive.
Despite all of the reverse ethinic cleansing going on after the serb army and police withdrew I don’t remember any KLA going up on charges… do you?
Very true. NATO and the U.S to be more specific was playing an agenda there that had nothing to do with the plight of the average Albanian in Kosovo.
And by all means they should spend money on thier people, but what is the point if at some time in the future the KLA could decide it wants more land or more of a say.. complete independance perhaps?
Sensible Serbs see Kosovo as already having achieved some factor of independence. Sad but true.
But I don’t think the KLA has the pull in Washington or the military capacity to encroach much further into Serbia proper.
FYROM though is another matter. It is weak militarily, economically and politically and doesn’t seem to have the stomach for a fight to defend itself, something which we are sure the Serbs aren’t like.
Then perhaps the US and NATO should start listening to all instead of one sided bullying. Perhaps if the so called axis of evil states were treated fairly they wouldn’t take such desperate measures.
Agreed.
Scud missiles are relatively cheap and an effective enough deterent for the near future. They don’t need to be armed with anything more than a HE warhead. If they could make their own missiles I am sure they could use them as effectively as Iraq did. These days I am sure they could improve on the CEP to make cities and even airfields targets. Doesn’t need to hit london, but hitting nearby NATO airbases that might be used offensively against them would be useful… and very affordable. A few Tochkas and Islander-Es would be quite useful too. What can the west say about it, as long as there are no WMDs they have plenty of ballistic missiles themselves. Having short and medium range ballistic missiles is not ilegal afterall.
The Balkans already has one ‘conflict’ where the combatants are armed to the teeth. 10 years of wars don’t warm Balkanites (be they Serb, Bulgaria, Croatian, Greek etc) to such things are procuring SCUD missiles to target whatever.
Sorry Gary but no one is saying they need to suck up. Simply that Serbia needs to focus on it’s economy and the welfare of it’s citizens.
Remember there has already been 1 World War that started in the Balkans.
Quite right Troung.
Attitudes like the above are what allowed the west to demonize Serbia in the first place. SCUD missles and nuclear weapons, that would surely help Serbia’s image abroad.
And for what possible gain? To use against the U.S or Great Britain? Will they decide to lob SCUD missiles onto Sarajevo?
At this point Serbia’s best military course is to develop it’s key economic indicators, because the state it’s currently in doesn’t see it fit to do much of anything for the Serbian Armed Forces let alone purchase expensive aircraft or procure expensive upgrades for the Serbian Air Force.
Quite true, but a better solution would be to develop nuclear weapons. That seems to be the only thing the West respects.
Are you being funny or do you really mean this?
Garry, Serbia is a country ravaged and ruined by 10 years of warfare. Standing up to NATO and the U.S is probably the last thing on the average Serb’s mind right now. They’re trying to re-build a country after a decade of violence.
Similarly, the LAST THING the Balkans need is the introduction of nuclear weapons.
The military is not a social welfare program in Greece like it is elsewhere. I read for instance Sweden’s armed forces keep bank hours. There must be a balance between pay and equipment.
Anyways I read a while ago that Italy’s air force pilots are the lowest paid in NATO.
besides, you know how journalists are when it comes to military matters. They call the Humvee an AFV.

USAF 31st FW from Aviano on detachment to Greece.
The pilot is a Greek American too if I remember correctly.
The idea of a Syrian anything getting inside of Israel for longer than a very short period of time is laughable.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but some years ago didn’t a Syrian UAV or manned aircraft penetrate Israeli airspace near Haifa and fly unopposed for some minutes before anyone did anything?
No country is 100% secure. Israel can be overflown whole in about 15 minutes, so the idea of something NOT being able to penetrate that small area of airspace is laughable.
The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead all are great flicks.
I saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre yesterday.
I recommend it to any horror fan. It’s an A film.

Where? In Canada?
-Canada does not occupy nations.
-Canada sings bilateral defence pacts with nations (NORAD) as a free and sovreign nation, not as a ‘clause’ for it receiving deserved independence.
-Canada honours it’s signatures, does Britain?
