Jeff West was the New Zealander who was Bader’s wingman that day. When Dilp Sarkar first brought up the “Friendly Fire” theory, he initially stated that he was not publishing any names in “Bader’s Tangmere Spitfires” for “ethical” reasons. From a short telephone conversation I had with Johnnie Johnson in 1997, I suspect he had some hand in this – he was adamant that neither Buck Casson or Jeff West would have been involved but he also admitted he had unswerving loyalties to all three. It seems unfortunate and perhaps suspicious that all these theories get aired once the participants have gone.

This is related I guess, I posted this on the Royal Aero Club site without response

My father’s flying logbook states that he took G-ACND for handling and dive tests July 5 1935 at Martlesham Heath.Gordon Kinsey reports in the book “Martlesham Heath” that “a member of the Royal Family” had entered the Mew Gull G-ACND in the King’s Cup for 1935. Can anyone tell me who the Royal was please?

There is a Spanish Civil War rendition of the Airspeed Viceroy on this page http://www.zi.ku.dk/personal/drnash/model/spain/did.html
I know this is an old thread but I picked up on it after finding that my father put the Viceroy through its C of A at Martlesham October 6-8 1934 in order for it to compete in the McRobertson race on October 20. You might pick up a colour scheme from material about the race. (I’m trying to find the full names and history of the pilots -N.Stack and S.L.Turner).
Cheers – if you completed the model I’d love a pic!

There was certainly some feeling among pilots about the divide between officer pilots and nco,s (especially among the Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders) and the Czech’s were part of this too. My info was from a groundcrew source and the word “(Polish?)” was pencilled in the margin with Czech as the original pilot. The date could have been out as it was not from a diary.

Thanks Papa – I was leaning towards the Argus but Lloyd was AOC Mediterranean Allied Air Force by then I think and I wondered if he had access to U.S. aircraft.
