Wow, a lightning strike in Canada started this? Who would have thought?
Any change to the industry position in Europe to allow guns in the cockpit?

Don’t you wish at times you were a consultant for the media? Why don’t they contact at least someone who would have a vague idea of the normal/abnormal operations of an aircraft before they start piecing together the “facts” from local drunks?
You should email your little essay here to those invovled with the ill-conceived report.
Good point, I have this feeling that after this whatever cascading events caused this will be changed for the future. For what ever reason when a main power plant goes down in one area it can pull down others in the same grid. I doubt they thought it would pull down an entire grid though.
I think the emergency plan for a nuclear power plant is to park the control rods shutting down the reactor. Rather than try to maintain enough entering power to control the cooling process it’s just safer to bring the plant down until the power grid is back up.
Here they use electricity to run pumps to supply fresh water for the city from Lake Erie. When the power went down they couldn’t pump in water and the city started running out of reserves in a matter of hours. Even with the power returning, parts of the city are without power AND water. Man does that suck. Thank goodness I leave outside of that area.
Must be from Texas. 😀

The paper today said it was ligthning, my gf was over in the detroit area and she was in blackout,Shouldnt airports have back-up generators…? They should use their own powersource in the first place…
I don’t think it could have been lightning as we didn’t have any storms anywhere near us or the power station in question. Who knows.
The airports and air traffic control centers were running on back up power but I think it was only essential power leaving the airport terminals themselves in the dark.
Apparently a power plant in central New York State went down for some reason bringing down the rest of the power grid “like a row of domino’s” as they’ve been saying. All NYC, Detroit and Cleveland airport departures were grounded while those inbound were permitted to continue with the option of landing or diverting. I’m sure both Toronto and Ottawa were the same way. They’re saying it’s not terror related or a result of the Microsoft worm/virus. The local news stations here haven’t had any new information to share for a while but power is slowly coming back already from what they’ve said. Cleveland the city won’t be open to traffic or pedestrians until noon tomorrow as they are still without power. The local radio stations are running out of the transmitter tower buildings. It sounds like a man and a CD player and that’s it. They put in a CD, play it start to finish and load in another one. So far I’ve heard almost the entire Led Zepplin catalog and a good portion of the Pink Floyd stuff from about the mid 70’s and later. Hey, no commericals!!
I was particularly intrigued by the P-47 still in the shipping crate. I talked to his wife a month ago about taking the tour but she was pretty stern about “no tours!” To bad, hopefully his $$ million collection finds a good home when he’s gone.
I’ll try to scan the 2 aerial pictures I have tomorrow.
It might take me awhile to scan those pictures (I did find them) but here is a picture journel of someone’s trip to the airplane graveyard.
This man has a GOLD MINE of aircraft. The Twin Mustang was sold about 4 years ago and is being restored somewhere.
It shouldn’t be to hard to track the pilot down since they have the aircraft registation number.
I gave this crusade a YES as well. There is a gentleman in the northern Ohio area that has a B-36 in his backyard as well as tons of other warbirds. Sadly he doesn’t allow visitors anymore as I believe his age is getting the best of him. I didn’t get a chance to visit before he stopped but I did spend many hours circling over his property looking at all the planes. I’ll have to dig up some of those pictures and scan them.
Thanks Roger, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a static display that has that ability. It makes for a great picture.
I’ve got to ask again since I’m dieing to know, what’s up with the spinning prop in the second picture of the Spitfire in question. Is it really spinning as a static display?
That’s what I had heard too. 🙂 A lot of people swear by the plane even with the stall/spin issue.
Pretty cool. Here’s a fixed link, you had a ; in place of the : .
