No major hub competition doesn’t mean success. The Philly airport is a nightmare even on good days. They are sandwich between the NYC and Washington DC traffic which greatly impacts all arrivals and departures out of PHL. US didn’t have any direct competition out of Pittsburgh and they basically closed down that operation in the last 2 years.
US Airways troubles aren’t coming directly from competition, they are bleeding money due to a lot of internal issues.
I was going to put this in the trip report but I’d like to discuss the probability of US Air actually surviving through to next summer, anyone think they will?
I wouldn’t gamble and purchase a ticket if that is what you mean. The next 4-5 months are going to be really tough for them as we head into the off-peak flying season AND fuel prices show no sign of coming down. I think by February or March we should start hearing about the possible future stability of US, good or bad.
Nice pictures again Kaplan Dig. It’s still odd to see all those PSA Do328’s parked. I believe by the end of September they stopped operating them completely and had shutdown their KCAK hub which had also been their maintenance base for the Do328’s.
That’s another company that has an uncertain future. When US lost their financial support for their EMB-170 and CRJ orders PSA lost all their incoming jets that were meant to replace the parked Do328’s. PSA is one of a few wholy-owned feeder which means all their financing comes from their parent company. I think they got just enough to replace the Do328’s 1 for 1 before the deliveries stopped. PSA will probably suffer a shutdown before US does.

Are those the blisters located at the APU exhaust and under the fuselage just aft of the cockpit windows?

With all this expansion going on Whiskey Delta, do you ever feel the urge to type convert and do some trans atlantic work yourself ? Or will there perhaps be enough 757 rated crew to fill in the gaps?
Since the Express division was sold off by Continental a few years ago our ability to move up to mainline has been severed at least through internal means. With the growth at CO this next year and that they are beginning to see the start of their huge retirements (they’ll lose half their pilots in the next 5 years) they will be hiring new pilots by the end of ’05 if not sooner. All I’ll need is to have 1000 hours of captain time under my belt before I could apply and that should happen within the next 2 years.
I’m fortunate to have friends and other contacts that are currently flying at CO in their 737 and 757 fleet that I feel I have a pretty good shot and getting hired there if I should feel the need. Things are going to be changing quite fast even here at ExpressJet that might tempt me to stay for a while. A LAX base and EMB-170/190’s are right around the corner not to mention we’re hiring like gangbusters which just about insures a rather nice quality of life.
It’s all about day off and pay and I might just end up with enough of both in the near future to keep me happy here. Nothings in stone as I would hate to miss a better opportunity if such an offer would arise. 😀

Her Majesty The Queen’s Bae146, check the RWR’s on the port forward fuselage WD.
RWR? It needs to be spelled out for us Yanks. 😉

Thanks A330Crazy. I had to keep the shutter open about 1/2 second to capture those pictures due to the low light which is why the beacon and strobes are visible. The light is “star-like” due to shooting through the window especially on the NWA 757 as a result of the front windshield heating element.

Normally used to transport the royal family around on official visits. Here’s a similar low sun shot I took.
It looks real sharp in that livery. I like that the tail and wings are both painted red.

Yes, thanks for the tip. I just adjusted the different Levels manually and didn’t think to try adjusting the image curve. I’m still quite a novice when it comes to such features as Image curve but I’m picking up tips here and there. I’ll play around with it as you suggested to get a better feel for its capabilities. Thanks again. PL.
