    [Wing… thingies]
In an airliner nothing left unneeded so of course everything has got a reason to exist and a use. Now could anyone tell me what the “tips” circled in my attachement are for (photo: courtesy of Wannabe Pilot)?

On a recent 737 trip I noticed these and they didn’t seem to be aligned like in the pic but rather forming a bizarre curve. I guess it’s something to do with guiding the airflow…

Without seeing the pictures I would guess that you are referring to the vortex generators on the top of the wing long the outer portion. You would be correct to think they are used for airflow. They are used to create vortices at higher speeds to prevent airflow seperation from the surface of the wing, specifically across the aileron flight control surfaces.

There’s my answer without the picture, how did I do? 😀

I remember one trip where they forgot to take off our luggage. Imagine a 737 worth of passengers waiting at the luggage carousel for their bags to appear only to watch as 3 bags appear and the carousel promptly shutdown. That was it, 3 whole bags made it off the airplane. The whole mass of us walked over to the lost luggage office where we were told that the ground crew forgot to pull all the bags off and the 737 had already departed for its next destination. We were not a very happy group.

Hey, I am curious about those figures, the A320 has less scheduled down-time than a comparable B737. For instance, I believe in AW BAMG quoted 30 days downtime for a D-Check on the B737, yet only 15 days downtime for an A320? That’s an extra 15 days that the A320 is in the air making money.

    I jest of course…

From mechanics I’ve talked to a 737 might be in D-check a bit longer but you won’t see her until the next one where sa the A320 will be back before you know it.

lots of flights at orlando international tampa and all in path of huricane have been cancelled and key west is still closed and this hurricane has been declared the worst in United States history killing at least 60 and causing $11 billion.

I don’t think that is correct. It’s way to early for an official $$dollar amount to be estimated and only 13 deaths have been reported. This storm wasn’t nearly as bad as previous hurricanes. Andrew caused between $20-25 billion back in 1992 and killed 23 people. Adjust that for inflation and it’s a truly amazing dollar amount.

I’ve probably showed most of these during the last year so I apologize for reposting them but they fit this thread.

I double checking my answer above when I came across this bit of info.

During World War II, tropical cyclones were informally given women’s names by US Army Air Corp and Navy meteorologists (after their girlfriends or wives) who were monitoring and forecasting tropical cyclones over the Pacific. From 1950 to 1952, tropical cyclones of the North Atlantic Ocean were identified by the phonetic alphabet (Able-Baker-Charlie-etc.), but in 1953 the US Weather Bureau switched to women’s names. In 1979, the WMO and the US National Weather Service (NWS) switched to a list of names that also included men’s names.

Leave it up to the Army Air Corp. 🙂 Perhaps if we knew who Betty was or Andrea we would expect the hurricane’s distructive force to be that equal to or greater than a storm name Hurricane Killer or Hurricane Smasher. 😉

Now I think we all have a few names we could suggest for these killer storms. 😀

Here are the upcoming Hurricane names for the next few years:

There are a few women I see in 2007 that are going to be some terrifying storms. 🙂

And here are the list of retired names:

WD, i absoulutley love the ERJ’s now, i loved sitting in seat A on the way back, as i was sitting in F there. Leg room was a bother too me, as i had to keep my bag under the seat, so i had to strech my legs out into the aisle, and allways look out incase someone was walking down it so they didn’t trip over 😀
I’m the opposite to clostrophobia, i love small spaces, so being so cramped inside it was great hehe.

So the ERJ is now my fave RJ!

Glad you liked the flight. 🙂

But don’t forget, most airlines can’t just write out a cheque to Mr. Boeing for their new planes.

Usually the aircraft are either financed by lending, or they are leased (or both). Usually there are interest costs and debt servicing costs, which are not one off…they last the lifetime of the loan.

So the lower upfront price can translate into regular monthly savings for perhaps a decade or longer.

True, but eventually an airline will own that aircraft. Northwest owns their 200+ DC-9’s outright, no leases to pay or anything. Every penny they earn on a ticket is their’s. Imagine if they had opted for a more efficient aircraft 30 years ago. What would have given them a bigger return over the last 3 decades, a lower lease rate for 10 years with higher operating costs or a higher lease rate for 10 years but the benefit of a lower operating cost for the next 20+ years?

Plus a lease doesn’t release a company from the burden of competing against their rivals and that is all about efficiency. A company pays $20,000 a month (a fabricated number) no matter how much they fly so it’s in their interest to fly that airplane as much as they can for those 30 days with the most passengers and with the lowest operating cost to get the largest return from that $20,000 price tag. Having a lower operating cost allows them to either a) charge less for a ticket than then an airline with a higher operating cost or b) charge the same amount and pocket extra profit due to a greater return from that lower operating cost.

Why do they give Hurricane’s daft names like Charley and Bonnie, making them sound like a cuddly pet animal ?

Why not something more appropriate like Hurricane Ripper or Hurricane Trailer Trasher ? Hmmm???

They use to be given only names of women (Similar to boats) but a number of years ago they began alternating between men and women names every other hurricane season.

As the storms form (initially Tropical Depressions) they are numbered (or perhaps lettered) in the order they form. TD 1 (or A), TD 2 (B). Then if they form into a full blown Hurricane they are given a name based on the order in which they formed orginally. So if the second Tropical Depression of the season forms into a Hurricane its given a name that begins with the letter B (Bonnie or Bill depending on the season). It’s possible that that the first Hurricane will be named Elvira if the first 4 TD’s didn’t form Hurricanes (A, B, C, D). They also don’t try to repeat names (at least as much as they can) to avoid instilling paranoia or at least so we can keep them seperate. Hugo was the really bad one years ago so we’ll probably not see that name used again.

Except the pressure altitude inside the aircraft is 8000′ or less, not 39,000′.
