Besides a single A320 costs twice as much as a 737-800
Where did you get that comparison from? Everything I’ve seen points to the A320 being cheaper than a 737.
Finally a change in airport security tech. Current metal detectors are a joke as they are metal detectors, not weapon detectors. They’ll stop a passenger with change in his pocket but let someone with a “non-metal item” slip right through. I’m glad to see someone embrace this new technology and let the nay-sayers be damned.
A captain I flew with on several occasions is now at ATA on the 737. (The Boeing link above has a picture of their 737 which is what made me think of this). Recently we had him jumpseat back home on our airplane and got the opportunity to catch up and talk shop. He said that their 737-700’s are unique in that ATA had very specific performance requirements as their hub is Chicago-Midway (ie short runways). The wing on their 737-700’s is a special design that enables them full-weight takeoff out of MDW and gives them incrediably slow approach speeds for their given size. They also operate the 737-700 with the -800 engine for added performance.
Most likely with this crowd you already knew that. 😉 If not, consider it another interesting fact to wow your friends with. 🙂 😀
UA 777 in the new livery, very above average! Who didn’t like that new colour scheme? 😮
I have to admit that I was one of those that wasn’t necessarily thrilled with the change. I just liked the previous livery a lot and hated to see it go. The new livery really has started to grow on me now that I’ve been seeing it around more. When will we see a 744 in this paint?
BTW, great pictures! What kind of lense do you use to get such close up pictures?
Thanks. 😀
I would say real. It appears that the instruments are showing appropriately for inflight.
In the photo of ground zero, I can’t seem to figure what is where. We stayed only a minute’s walk from the site. Anyone know which building is the World Financial Center?
I don’t know if this helps but here’s where the footprints of the 2 towers were with north being to the left.
I take it the anvil shaped clouds are the storms ?
Yes. The winds aloft where very weak (less than 10 knots) which made the tops of the storms more blurred than the traditional anvil shape.
Last week took me to La Guardia in NYC. They were landing to the south which meant we flew up the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan. The pictures are as follows:
1. The Statue of Liberty
2. The southern tip of Manhattan
3. Ground Zero
4. Looking back towards the south with Central Park off the wing
5. Very short final to Runway 22 at LGA
Rather than create one Kai Tak thread after another could you please just add to your previous thread. You have 6 posts and 5 are different threads all about the same thing.
Airtran just put in their order for 737’s. Southwest is still booming and taking 737’s.
I’ve heard all ground controlling frequencies combined on one, usually tower, during slow times. Clearance Delivery, Ground and Tower are all handled by the Tower controller on Tower Frequency. ATIS will ususally state to contact Tower for clearance or for ground movements as the other frequencies are closed.
What a gorgeous airplane. Thanks for sharing the outstanding pictures!
It’s a 757 but I don’t know the airline.
Why do people fly such short distances? By the time you have checked in for the flight and then disembarked and passed through the destination airport, wouldn’t it have taken at least 3 or 4 times as long as going by road?
Even though it’s only across town the drive time north to IAH is about 1.5 hours thanks to traffic and it’s not a straight line drive. This particular airport is very close (just down the street) from Houston-Hobby which happens to be a hub for the Low-Cost Carrier Southwest Airlines. The leg from EFD to IAH is thrown in for free to passengers to tempt them to chose to fly CAL rather than Southwest. The flight attendant said that CAL loses about $2 million a year on the IAH-EFD flights. Something they make up for by having passengers book connecting flights in IAH to other destinations. CAL use to run 737’s from IAH to HOU (Hobby) which is an even shorter distance than IAH-EFD. They pulled out of there a few years ago probably realizing that it was cheaper to fly in and out of EFD.
Once we stop flights to EFD we will be resuming flights out of Houston-Hobby but not to IAH, those flights will be to the Cleveland and Newark hubs. I guess the benefit of free tickets from the local airports isn’t cost effective anymore.
