That’s them EGTE thanks, the Exeter outfit (unsure of name) had Hunters based at Mawgan temporarily aswel at the time and remembered the Northern Lights name.
There was talk of them becoming two seaters by changing the noses over, I was particularly interested as I fancied a single seat Hunter cockpit at the time!
The Exeter outfit is Hunter Flying Ltd
Just a couple of pics from Exeter, there was 8 Hunters there last time i was down plus the 2 Dutch ones and team Viper asway, Think it makes Hunter Flying Ltd the biggest jet operator in the Uk
and yes the two seater/single seater worked it the one in Canada flying (was done a couple of years ago)
say microsoflt and up £5K south west
Hunter XE601 heading west over Tiverton with a nice blue note at about 3pm
Just got my Lihgnting airframe course notes out 11 pages on the canopy so what do you what to know ????

One of my friends (ex Lightning pilot lol), he told me that they use to do U2 intercept when they were out in Cyprus and he’ed bottle out at 79,000 feet !!!!
yes i see what you mean. All i can suggest is that 693 had no Radar fitted, or weapons pack and never had missiles fitted so was probably a bit light at the nose! Or perhaps Warton inflated the oleo a bit more, hope this helps
693 had no rader fitted but had test kit fitted in its place (for the tonka work she did at Warton) same with the weapons pack full of test kit, a couple of day after she arrived at Exeter (24th Dec 92 very nice xmas present) BAe came down and removed it all, so lead weights where fitted in the bullet and a proper weapon pack ( for memory redtop)
Back to flying condition? I love it!:D Everyone seems to think it’s ugly, but I like it! Shame the last flying one is still stuck on the other side of the pond? Anyone have an update on that? Mark, do you have any cockpit pictures of this one? How’s it general condition? Do you have spare engines and other parts?
Sorry no cockpit pictures 🙁
general condition is very good and got all the spares (engines etc etc etc :)) needed coming over the next couple of weeks.
David,
There is a single latch at the top of the seat with a spring-loaded plunger. The plunger engages into a channel around the top of the seat gun to stop the seat from sliding up the rail until the gun fires.
To remove the seat the plunger must be withdrawn against the spring pressure.
First two pictures show the top latch from both sides. The third picture shows the special top latch tool in place. It has two pins on it – one that it pivots on and the other than engages in a hole in the plunger. When the tool is pivoted (to the right in the picture) the plunger is withdrawn. You don’t really need the proper tool though, you can do it with a couple of screwdrivers.
Incidentally, these photos are of a Hunter seat but the Canberra is exactly the same arrangement.
Hope that helps.
one thing MarkG forgot same arrangement for a single seat Hunter !! 2 seater are differant seats
The complexity of reheat?
The excrutiating tyre wear?
The poisonous Avpin?
The ludicrous landing speed?
The high fuel consumption?
The fuel leaks?
The hydraulics that require lots of TLC.
Probably loads more I couldn’t think of in such a short time.
In short, it requires an awful lot of maintenance which would make it a poor risk in the eyes of the CAA.
It is one hell of a kite though.
All most right it was becasue the Lightning has no back up system to the hydraulics for the controls
Spot on radarsdesk, yes the Lightning was an hydraulic unit.
Here is another relatively easy one for you all……
John.
Easy one Gun camera just under the radar bullet (in the intake)
For me
Hunter (T-bird)
Howard 500
just two LOL
Its not there anymore
passed it on the A30 at Bodmin just before Xmas
