ah Nuno Gomes, I was reading the Alert 5 article not the Hurriyet one and I stand corrected. Just goes to show the F15 should not try and be an A10 😮

So true :p
But we still have no word on what happened…i douth the F-15 was close to the ground…
When an aircraft like the F-15 is hit these are my usual suspects…

The OA-10 is regular single seat A-10 armed with rockets…they were just called OA-10 for some reason…no changes in avionics or airframe…no 2 seat A-10s ever entered servive…only 1 built

The only factually correct part about ^^ was the ‘more expensive’ part.

Is that true? Please show me were the F-35 can use Harpoon/SLAM missiles…or the HARM missiles…or Maverick…
And please educate me why the F-35 has longer range than the F-16?

As predicted… U.S. pilots are expressing frustration about the kill chain against ISIS due to lack of FACs on the ground. You cannot fight a war like this from the air without troops on the ground who know how to call in air power effectively.

Enter the A-10 🙂

I put it another way. None of the governments involved in this campaign which is close to home and currently getting plenty media attention, will want to start losing aircrew over bandit country. If you aren’t using your 30mm cannon at low level, then the A10 is currently surplus to requirements.

Did you open the article you have posted? It states that the F-15 was HIT in the hydraulic system…HIT…like in AAA
I would agree with you that this is an interdition mission and the A-10 has no part in such a mission…but…they are using Apache gunships(helicopters are historacly more vulnerable that fixed wings) and there talking in suporting Iraqui troops…

So…no need for F-35…
Let get this straight…it has less range than an F-16,cant use the same weapons and is more expensive…less potential for future versions…it only edge is its RCS…

The Syrian jets have been dropping mostly unguided munitions at low level as opposed to things like JDAM/PW/Brimstone etc which don’t require you to fly low down to have a chance of hitting your enemy.

How about that mudHen? was it firing rockets at something?
Its easy to ignore that many times in modern warfare you will have to use your cannon…no matter if you are in a A-10 or a Super Hornet http://youtu.be/Iy9VPTWyLh0
This can happen because you have spend your PGMs,because of civilians or because of friendly troops neer by…

Fisrt of all,a lot of people here belive in the idea that slow moving aircraft are vulnerable to AAA and SAMs but fast jets are not…
Consider the Super Tucano…how many have been lost to AAA and MANPADS? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_314_Super_Tucano#Colombia
The syrian air force only uses fast jets and they have been dropping like flyes vs AAA , SA-7s and chinese MANPADS…
Some things to consider:
Small agile aircraft flying low and turning like flyes(aided by proper CM) are hard to hit…many times they pop up ,fire and get away leaving no time to fire back…
Modern fast jets are easier to hear and spot and are vulnerable to AAA(contrary to common belief)…a few days ago an american F-15E had to make an emergency landing in Turkey…http://www.worldtribune.com/2014/09/12/isil-using-anti-aircaft-batteries-captured-iraq/
Most of the A-10s hit in ODS where so in their 2nd ot 3th run to the target…F-16 would drop bombs and go away,A-10s would do the same and then return with the cannon vs an allerted foe…

What did impress the pilots about it?
Why cant the new tech developed for the F-35 be integrated in new build legacy fighters and the F-22?

well Gripen NG could barely beat that timeline, EF also, God only knows when it has anti ship integrated,
so only Rafale could have met the time, but who knows if it will ever be compatible with munitions you have

Obligatory,are you pro F-35 or against it…

Isn’t there any power requirement that would prevent its usage in a turbojet powered fast aircraft of the old Gen ?.

The A-10 uses a Turbofan engine…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Electric_TF34

Just to illustrate my point,the A-10 could be made almost invulnerable to MANPADS if the USAF would give it a good DIRCM system like this http://youtu.be/JziiMt3papI

This is not something out of my head…A-10 pilots have been asking for this for years
