The Constellation last flew in the Spring of 1974. It carried out a meat charter flight from Dublin to Libya and back. It then had engine problems and was grounded awaiting a replacement. I well remember being at the airport in March/April 1974 listening to the Connie being given an engine test. However, it never flew again. The owners did a runner leaving the plane abandoned to its fate. It was pushed around the apron for the next nine years, eventually being taken by low-loader top Dublin docks and then being ferried to Liverpool where it made its final journey bu road to Wroughton.

I remember watching it in the 1970s. On Irish TV it was billed as “Baa Baa Black Sheep”.

Typical of the Internet age for people to assume it’s a “faked” incident. I saw it on TV news over 20 years ago. They also interviewed the reporter in hospital – sitting up in bed with an enormous bandage around his head. I know the chap’s name but I can’t remember it at the moment.

I have no doubt that the whole of Ireland would have been occupied too. Despite some sympathy for Germany in Ireland, the overall population would have been devastated by the notion of the Nazis occupying the country.

Don’t forget that there were quite a few Irish in the RAF (from both sides of the border) in 1940.

The 109 also had a huge amount of “Toe Out” set into the mainwheel undercarriage legs.

About 35,000 109s were made. I would say that 1/3 damaged in take off or landing accidents would not be too unbelievable. Maybe not written off though,

I well remember a “Bf” v’ “Me” debate raging in Aviation News about 1973. Officially, up until about 1941 Messerschmitt designs carried the Bf prefix but even before then the prefix “Me” was being used casually by both Germans and their enemies. From the 210 onwards Messerschmitts were officially designated Me.

Hope it’s better than the version shot in Ireland in 1970 (ish).

I bumped into an Airfix rep in a model/toy shop last week and he told me that the TSR2 release date is now “early December”.

I think Hannants have already sold out all those decal sheets as well.

The Constelation earmarked for the second series of “Airline” was ex KLM L749 N7777G which had been languishing at Dublin since March 1974. With the cancellation of the second series, the Connie was low-loaded and car ferried to Wroughton and refurbished as a TWA machine.

I happened upon the mounting of the Farnborough E25/39 one night when driving home from Fleet. The mounting was carried out at about midnight and was an interesting spectacle. I was told that the wing cross section has been profiled so as to minimise the lift created in strong winds.

The original 1920s cars were Brooklands racers and were actually called “Chitty Bang Bang”. The cars were owned and raced by Count Louis Zborowski who was eventually killed at Monza driving a Mercedes.

How about a DVD series? Doug Nye and Dasvid Wegeulin are currently producing quarterly motor sport DVDs (and videos) made up of archival footage beautifully reproduced. The series is called Motorfilms Quarterly and is proving very popular.
