Sad but not surprising. I echo a lot of the sentiments on here, but have to say that this has been coming for the last 15 years. MOD wigs have wasted such insane inordinate ammounts of money in the last 15 years, on incompetent badly thought out, and bungled procurement programs, it was only a matter of time before a government was forced to make such sacrifice. the crunch has come for MOD

it’s MOD’s fault, rather than a question of short sighted MP’s. As an organisation, it has resisted change or any efforts to make it more efficient and less wasteful for the last 20 years, putting it in the sitiuation it is in now. It’s easy to target defence cuts as the culprit, but how can a badly run, old fashioned organisation expect to continue to write off £8-12 billion every year on complete c0ck ups, and then baulk when huge culls like this take place?!. I’m no politician fan, but seems to me its easy to blame them and private industry, when fury should be directed at the top floors within MOD. We only get to see the end reasult, ie Harrier and Nimrod cancellations, but just look at every sigle procurement deal in the last 15 years, and it makes for astonishing reading!. The incompetency and wasteage within MOD really is absolutely incredible..and it has now come up against a roothless government that is prepared to do what ever is necessary to deal with it. Read the Dispatches papers on MOD procurement for the last 15 years, its a real eye opener!!

    poor Harrier! 🙁

ideally you need the manuals that cover the “big” hunter conversion.Cranberry manuals will suffice if its for the large Avon Cranberry.

Matt, Im fairly sure the JPT test set has gone to the hangar now, but we have the kit to set up a test set at gatwick too, which we will need soon enough too, so once set up, i’ll let you know.

we’ll hopefully run both vixen’s engines on saturday weather permitting and wind the throttle in on the stbd a bit, what is strange is that DT says the JPT was reading on the stbd side during running which is strange as i removed the JPT amp a few weeks ago and the thermocouples on the jet pipe aren’t physically connected to the gauge wiring wise, mmm head scratch

we’ll soon have no more new engines to run at the field at this rate

oh yeah there is the gnat and 3rd JP next

The JP will be off jacks as soon as we can spare some time and bodies to fit the main gear components any volunteers gratefully accepted !!!!

mate, well done. excellent news indeed. Sure ya know already, but be V.cautious about your jpt on that 208, get it hooked up asap seeing as you have been into the atomisers!. can take seconds to fubar hp’s from H spots or inadequate pattern.. and you’ll only see that quickly enough from jpt responce. oh to have cavity cooled blades eh! 😀 Avon not so robust under that circumstance, not like the brick sht house Spey…

good luck with the rigging, fiddly fiddly.::rolleyes:

If this is Tony O’Neill who lives in England (the Arrows GP car makes me think it is as he had a lot of Arrows bits about 20 years ago) then this is the latest of his collections.
He is a friend of a friend who I knew for a short time in the late 80’s. His previous collections included Arrows GP cars (he drove a demonstration in an Arrows A11 turbo car at Lydden around 1989/90 with help from Arrows) and later he had a collection of Porsche 956/962 Group C sportscars and a Porsche 935 or two – not bad for someone whose early career was as a development engineer at Greeves motorcycles.

I think one of his Arrows is on display at PTR Racing in Horley/Gatwick. I had a look around it a few weeks ago, and its definitely a runner. The staff said it was on loan from a “local collector” who’s into planes and bikes too. Think I may have met the guy. some time last year a guy approached me whilst working on the Lightning and professed to have a mint runnable Jag in his garage/workshop near Haywards Heath. I took it with a pinch of salt, but perhaps he wasnt a b****ter after all 🙂

That’s why I don’t think the big players would consider it Ben.

MJR, apologies if my post inferred the interior was wrongfully stripped. H, J, & K – what’s the chances of buying three Shacks with consecutive code letters!

Bruce, the RAFM museum does own WR960, but they don’t have a Coastal Command representative example, or a Mk.3 (they scrapped their own, XF703 Henlow store mid 1970s) on the books, or much more importantly any Shackleton to look at at their museum sites.

No it’s fine, I didn’t read it that way at all. Yea I know H,J and K, just lucky I guess..

It did indeed, it was purchased by GAM, along with “juliet” and “Kilo”, and a deal was done to allow it to go to Marsden. We retained the interior for J and K, to replace components that MOD took without permission, after the sale had alredy taken place.

thanks guys. I will try to get some updates on here too pagen. your right bruce, being mad isn’t a prerequisite for one of these machines, but it does help!

cheers Matt, I’ll get the specs tommorow, I dotn have them with me at the moment.

yes, it’s very time consuming and doesn’t produce a big visual impact progress wise, but over 400 circuits and splices have gone in now, where there was nothing before, so its v good progress indeed, when you consider you are looking at about 10-15 circuits a day identified, cabled and spliced, sometimes less. The biggest annoyance is the splices themselves are £1 each, being aerospace grade.

    Hi Phphil.

    We dont normally post updates here now, since we have the website updates section. But since the website is not due to be updated until next week, here’s a round up;

It is going very well, but rewiring her is a slow process, so visually not too exciting for those of you following the project!. Excellent progress has been made since we started re wire back in July. The entire port loom has been reconstructed and installed. Currently we are working on constructing the S/B looms. It’s a laborious process I’m afraid. We Gutted the airframe of all its equipment, then identify each component loom end, front and back, through metering out using the Topic 10 leccy manuals, then feed in the cables, ident them, loom them up, and splice them together at the transport joint. This is stage one. The next stage will be to go through an end to end test schedule, for all 1000 odd circuits, to make sure there are no splicing mistakes… As I said, a laborious task requiring intense concentration, but very rewarding to see each service go live.

    A few pics below

Below .Port side Loom missing when we got her. The looms had been cut out and thrown away during the “Wing commander” production. Circa 2002 http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/keyforumthread/missing looms.jpg

next…Port side loom in the process of construction and splicing up last month. Much of the rear looming we recovered from a scrapper, and we have been using it as required. ZF582 IIRC

Starboard looms coming together. The weapons looms have gone in, but terminated. We have left them in because it gives added strength and support to the looms.

Cant help but think that the long term future for a machine like this could only be secured by putting her undercover . I can think of one place with a long association with the type that it would perfectly fit in but it would require vision and commitment from her current custodians.

and there’s the rub David. Unfortunately the LA is not just the one willing custodian of CR…

Wish you well Phil, and hope that the pig headed attitude has gone for 724’s sake. If you need any help from Gatwick/AALO, don’t hesitate to make contact, that is genuine, we really want to see her get some TLC too..
