hey andy, ever seen the video tony made, of Nev trying to break those airframes up at Cranfield?? if anyone ever had any doubts about how strong lightning wings are, it’s blown away in that video.the most impressive bit was where the entire airframe of 899 is being thrown around like a rag doll, trying to break off the starboard wing, which had already been cut 80% the way through with a chop saw. It faught to the bitter end. Absolute carnage!!:o

She could still put up a fight with any modern fighter ….. well for about 10 mins anyway:D

    ..

Well seeing as sauds are still using the f3 Tonka for another year or so, avionics aside, the Frightning is an easy match for it. Tonka pilots frequently complained at Warton during the foxhunter radar trials that Frighting pilots would purposely go too fast for them to keep up.:D against the typhoon though? no chance, its way superior in every respect.:-(

“Splendid progress chaps …. thanks everso for the pics…. most enjoyable.

My beast F1a, XM172 has quite a few bits of pipework etc stiil attched inside so, if they have any commonality, and you find your are missing a bit, you are most welcome to have them to assist your rebuild…

Looking forwards to hearing her run!! “

thanks Neil, its all good fun, the ultimate hobby. Thanks for the offer, will keep that in mind. Unfortunately though, I think there are very few parts in the F1a’s that are interchangeable with the F6/f53 :-(..

Hows that Hui doing? still diceing and slicing?

Well, though it was bitterly cold today, 3 of us got a fair bit done on 579. Apart from the usual weekly leccy and hydraulic anti dets, We got on with finishing no2 engine bay as the weather was dry, which I’m pleased to report, is now ready for it’s engine. So both bays are now ready for engines :-).

We also managed to inspect the no1 interspace firebottles, which we found to be in very good overall condition, so we will be leaving them alone, and just checking the cabling for insulation leakage. We also got started on n02 reheat pipe, which is in much the same state that number one was in, before we overhauled it. if that wasn’t enough, we managed to get started on the first of the two engine IPN starter inspections, and also give the reheat pipe solanoids a clean bill of health. So a good day overall, and another step closer..:)

    a few pics from today.

    from left to right….

first. No1 interspace firebottles in situ….
Next one. One Lightning avpin starter…
No2 reheat pipe coming to pieces earlier today…seized solid..
next, no1 reheat solanoids being inspected, and surprisingly..were mint!

A couple of hunter t7 seats we pulled out of XL591, to make it easier to work in the cockpit.

lastly..no1 reheat pipe and no2 interspace pipe ready and waiting for fitting..

Hi, the museum is now closed for the winter, but we still do viewings by appointmnt if you want to come and have a look. Best to come over on a dry Saturday, when all the crew are around. If you drop the museum a line, or myself telling us which day you want to come over, it can be arranged.

Hi folks,, a few more to amuse you..;)

One dreaded Lightning Gearbox in pieces after removal, 2004.

This job alone, took approx 250 hours. To be build 3 serviceable boxes, we used 8 gearboxes!, and had to account for every gearbox serial number, to keep track of the hours on each eventual part used.

    http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/keyforumthread/Patgb.JPG

same gearbox overhauled and installed in the aiframe. It checked out and tested with a hot air trolley a treat.

    http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/keyforumthread/gearboxinstallegggd.jpg

tank entry inspections, 2003. 50 gals of fuel was introduced into
the tanks at a very early stage, just to re-accustom the PRC
sealant to being immersed in fuel. This way, by the time we put in
another 2700lbs a side in 2006, we hopefully wouldn’t get any leaks.
As it turned out we had 2 leaks, both from flexible
leading edge pipes!! We thaught we had done something wrong,
since we had a lightning that didn’t leak fuel, even under 10psi
of positive tank pressurisation!. The no1 engine bay was different story though, all the frame joints leaked like a sieve, so after 18 months of work rebuilding the bay, we had to take the whole lot out again in 2006.

So you get the gist of it..

heres some more, of 579 progressing over the years and looking like
    a totally different machine gradually

2006… All the problem areas on the outer skings are treated,
    corrosion removed and luster restored

April 2000, and Feb 2006,, an empty no1 engine bay, and a full bay..

2007, now soome 6000 manhours along the road, a different beast

    [IMG]http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/keyforumthread/DSCF1267small.jpg

September 2008, and no2 engine bay close to being finished
    and ready for an engine

    [IMG]http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/lightning/keyforumthread/bay2.jpg

septemeber 2008, hydraulic tests and leak checks on the aiframe

Anyway…I could continue posting a million pictures, but thats best left for the
website progress section below. Hopefully this has been of some interest, and I
will continue to post progress over the next year or so on PROJECT53 status, as
ZF579 draws ever closer to engine installs… 🙂

guys, no worries, I’m glad she still stirs some interest…I think Andy will agree though that, although Never say never (after all there is a lightning that was 50 times worse returning from the brink:rolleyes:) but I dont think we will see 724 return to a runner for a long while, if at all. Sorry to be a doom merchant, but there just isn’t the infrastructure or man power left at Binners to mount the full scale effort required to pull her engines, pipes, de-fuel her and pull her to pieces for the work required anymore. Additionally all the available active Lightning expertise required to do it, is fully tied up with Brunty, Cranfield, Stennis USA and Gatwick these days. I kid you not, between these 4 groups that’s it for the uk!! (we are all close, afterall there are not many of us). So whilst we all wish we had the time to spend a week or 2 a month giving 724 full attention, it really isn’t possible. The best 724 is going to get right now, is what Andy and co are planning, which is a cursery check over, wax oil, corrosion treatment, good covers and a pat on the back/watchfull eye, and maybe electrical power to drive out some moisture.

Dont worry she has a watchful eye on her all the time……but she needs a good permanent experienced crew..simple as that.

    Hi peter,

I think you will find it is simply a “recce” exercise to see what is viable, and establish the scale of the job required. I can assure you, it will take a lot more than a fewweekends to make 724 runnable again.

    Hello Russel, Milton and all!

Milton – nice pics, glad to see your ATG is on it’s way in, I remember the hassle we had with changing XS458’s back in the day. It caused literally Blood, Sweat, but not many tears! Really good to see the progress on your project – Say hello to Dave and Rod for me!

Haha… on the subject of bare aluminium Lightning – a sure-fire way to get it rottttting away! I like the old Army saying – if it moves, grease it; if it doesn’t, paint it! Like Milton said, if such aircraft had the privelage of either a hangar or a constant cleaning, oiling programme then it would be possible, but at great cost. But when the guys only have one day a week to keep her runnig and operating (outside, with only sheets protecting it from the elements), keeping on top of a bare aircraft would mean having to sacrafice time spent on other duties to keep it running.

Russ, I’m liking this idea of the Super BBQ!

Been a while since I’ve been in touch, hope to hear back from some familiar people soon. Little news from my end: I’m getting married in less than 3 weeks!!! it’s crazy how quick it’s come around.

Glad to be back posting on here, Scott Bouchard

Hey scott,Russ, sorry for the late reply, I only just noticed it! great to hear from you, its been ages since we have seen you.Sounds like all is good, getting married too eh (nutter!!) :D. thanks, ATGB went in without any fuss at all for us, no blood, not even a scratch! peachy! yes… project is well into its final stages now, she’s fuelled to the brim and champing at the bit! engineering mainly all done. Just lots of quiet wiring and engine dressing over winter, so it will be busy early next year. had a few minor hick ups recently in the programme, port wheel brake walking joint sprang a nice hyd leak everywhere, v inconvenient, so had to bleed the system again! then last week with fuel contents gauging going haywire on the port wing, (getting dab at sorting gauging problems out, real poo set up on the Lightning!!) had to defuel 2800lbs of avtur from port wing sat morning to get at the problem, but it was all sorted by midday on saturday and fuelled back up by 1pm! anyone would think we were going flying or somit:p

nice pics!. Tub’s looking spic and span as usual boys. still waiting on that go faster stripe tho!.Need to speak to you russ, will give you a buzz in the next couple of days.

c u soon….regards to Colin, john, andrew, from the saudi machine crew…Ma’ Alsalam (peace out):D:D

Hi all, sorry or the v.long delay, but following on from the RAF 90th celeb run, here is a snip of some footage from the run (the run time was over 15 minutes, which gets boring to watch! hence cut down) sorry about the quality, but it’s the best we could do with you tube. Enjoy.
