You just answered your own question, non responce from the saudi embassy says it all. We dont make the rules, we just follow em, we enquired, we got an answer. Duxford? who knows, ask them. North Weald? ditto.

I don’t think you’ll see the last of the CAA directive I’m afraid?
I’ve seen a draft proposal and it’s identical to the one we got issued for the Avon Engine. We raised every sensible arguement possible to try to get it abolished but to no avail. Once the seeds are sown ect ect
I pity the poor ******s who are going to have to prove their engines to carry on flying like we have. 🙁
    Engineers motto……if it ain’t broken…don’t fix it!
    Nuff said!

well with any luck, the muppet show that claims to run our little island will be voted out before it sticks.

I have looked through the GA website and I am very impressed with what is being done to 53-671, By the looks of things it is almost a return to flight style restoration, What are the plans for this airframe?.

    Regards

    John.

Hello john, thanks for the kind comments, much appreciated. Yes 671 is getting the full royal treatment, since the airframe arrived in a thousand bits, we decided from day one that every single component would be inspected and re-furbished where possible. The re-build has been on going since 2001 now, and we are on the home straight, a lot of money as been spent on the old bucket. PM me and I will give you the low down.
We are treating it like a return to flight re-build, since it is easier that way, this way we can guarantee that no compromises are made.

The web pages are 6 months out of date already, current pace of rebuild means its out of date within weeks of re-freshing the pages.

Nice piicie above. 687 is now basking in the saudi sun light.

maybe this is a good excuse for a Lightning piccie thread, there hasnt been one for a while. Not that I am biased. 😀

indeed he is no more, but it wouldn’t look very good on caa publication ” we have shelved this directive cos mr so and so has carped it, and we thought it was a stupid idea anyway” 😀

We have made equiries into this issue for 53-671 at Gatwick. The responce we got was. We can go ahead and display in Saudi Colours, but are not allowed to display any markings with religeous content, ie Fin flash is fine but the refrences to the Coran cannot be displayed. Hence We have all the original Saudi Warning markings, and are having all but the Coran refrences on the Fin flash. We are going for best of both worlds, one side Saudi Markings and the other in return flight RAF markings. Saudis have softened a fair bit in recent years on this issue. It was a big no no 5-6 years ago, to display any markings at all.

No surprise such a hair brained idea has been suspended, just that though unfortunately, it wasn’t scrapped, CAA used the excuse that is was shelved for now, because the guy devising the whole thing, could no longer work.

Yeh right………..more to do with all the rotten fruit and veg lobbed in their direction.. he he. Good news for now though.

“does the CAA turbine policy have an impact?”

Are we talking about the same turbine policy, that was shelved back in December by the CAA, when almost all of the private operators in the UK turned around and said, “fine so you dont want the revenue that we are bringing you in then?”

d&g may look small, but let me assure you, they are a very effective crew of chaps, 584 will be extremely well looked after once there, and we for one will be helping them out with any Lightning spares they may require.

yes well done to East Fortune for turfing out a whole hangars worth of perfectly descent aiframes, with naff all notice, to stick a chopped up concord in instead. But hey its ok, because its bringing in revenue. It makes perfectly good sense..

“BA have loaned the airframes to these institutions, they are not responsible in any way for their maintenance, all they have to do is check the condition of the airframe and see its being looked after ‘properly’.”

and when BA see one isnt being looked after, they will read them the riot act, glue it all back together again and confiscate it?

    loaned my a$s!

oops zf584, getting confused with the 53 at Rochester. Not sure if this one is a tin can or not, most that went on plinths were gutted , to save weight. I know one of the volunteers at D$G, will get some gen on zf584, once it arrives. It will be well cared for. It will be interesting to see if BAE systems get rid of ZF580 too, also on a plinth at south gyle, last I heard.
