Besides, Serbia would have to spend money on someone’s old mig-29s first and than smend more money on refurbishing them. Then in few years, they would be in the same situation.
Serbia already has mig-29s.. they dont need to buy anymore.

the US Navy sure had a ton of designs during the 50s and early 60s.. why is that?
That is a shame about both the F/RF-4ETM fleet as well as the F-5-2000
Is the TuAF just going through substantial budget cuts? I was under the impression the upgraded Phantoms would go until at least 2014-2015 to account for F-35 delays. Retiring them in 2013 seems a bit soon.
As for the F-5 fleet, I don’t understand why they don’t phase out the T-38 fleet. The F-5 is a better performing aircraft if only by a little.
A shame….
they need trainers. the T-38 is a trainer.
they were using their F-5s only for training not for fighting.
F-5s, Mig-21 upgrades?? Why would anyone invest anymore in such ancient technology and waist anymore time and money on such old frames. I don’t get this at all.
very cheap to operate, and they are very solid reliable airplane. the airframe age can be reduced somewhat through overhauls (to an extent). thats why so man yF-5s an d MiG-21s still in service. also god enough for policing
Yak-130 is one of my favorite planes, but it cannot be a policeman. Its too slow, period. For policing the sky you need supersonic airplane, and a bit longer range radar preferably than yak-130 has.
I would love to see Yak-130 in Serbian air force as well, but I think that developing Super Galeb further makes a lot more sense for such role.
Czechs were planning to use ALCA to do that role and thats even slower than the Yak-130!
I still think that if choice had to be made this year, financially and practically Mig-29M2 was the best choice given the available choice.
if Russia offered soem kind of military help
thats not the best available choice
best available choice is this
just re-furb more of these. done.
Yeah what would those McDonnell…er Boeing guys know about canards and stealth?
the x36 canards were on the same plane as the main wing no problem
the natf was not as it was oblique..northrop did that not because of stealth considerations but due to landing characteristics required for a carrier. other wise the ywoudl have not chose that design
However in the missile age shooting down migs has been one of the rarest missions a fighter pilot will undertake and most fighter losses have been to SAMs and ground fire. Between 1968 and 1972 the US didn’t venture into mig territory, so its a waste to have F8s in the theatre to combat a threat that does not exist when they can be profitably employed attacking ground targets.
i like this convo.. very interesting topic..
would the F-8 prolong the life of ark royal? if it did, would the F-8 still be useful in teh Falklands?
the French used the F-8 forever!
the X-32 is the only thing today thats close to a modern day F-8
For twin engined model: Eurojet EJ230
For Single Engined: F100-GE-132
I personally like their single engine design and the US and Russia is the only country that can provide them a single engine of that thrust.
it depends if Turkey wants its aircraft to rely on European parts or US parts.
Neither why don’t just get Both? MiG-35 isn’t as much successful as other Russian fighters. Coincidence?
does the air force really need both?
many air forces that are operating fulcrums and flankers are retiring one and focusing on the other.
Belarus is leaning towards fulcrum only and retiring their flankers
Malaysia is leaning towards flankers and retiring fulcrum
Ukraine might go fulcrum over flanker but we shall see
Eritrea prefers flanker over fulcrum
to be another poster by the name of PLA (he now posts in Pakdef as Munir). He got banned unfairly, so I decided to stop being a silent spectator and join as “PLA-MKII”.
Hopefully with that you can stop sniping at me for a while at least. Is that too much to ask? 😛
you know what, i think your suggestion is fair so lets move on
But my planes 1/72 scale model has flown..in a heavy wind…I am still analysing…seems that it was too hastily built. It flew from the first hand throw around 10 meters and completed 2 ( fairly large dia ) barrel rolls fluently. It has a metal hook for some serious catapult action in calmer weather for supersonic equivalent speeds ( not supersonic ).
There is in the same scale my 12 years old unlimited Merlin powered Reno-racer Able Duck in the background ( a joined wing pusher design ).
The model is mostly plywood so I just bend the surfaces to get some better data about its stableness and flight caracteristics..it is pretty stable already..there were few outstanging flights too..what bugs me a bit is that few times it went inverted and was also very stable flying upside down..with a higher sink rate.
wheres the room for air intake and engines?
Yes, but some here still don’t get or simply don’t want to see the facts !!!
how many “pixels” is the grey flanker to the one in primer?
it looks a bit off. if they are not the same then that means the pixel comparison might be slightly off because of the angle.
also at 19 or whatever pixels they are using.. 1 or 2 pixels off changes the length considerably and with a image that pixelated.. there’s room for error
however that said it is obvious that the j-20 is roughly the same size as the flanker and that the pak-fa is noticeably smaller than the flanker but larger than the fulcrum
adriann,
With all due respect, your analysis is way off.
There is no danger of a revolt of any kind by the army. The army is under strict political (albeit not democratic) control by the civilian authorities. Serbia is simply not one of those countries in which the military is a separate block from civilian political affairs.
Certainly wages are low, as is morale, but it is not just unlikely but neigh on impossible that this deal is some kind of effort to buy the army off.
If you’re looking for a back-story, think more in terms of Russia’s interests (both financial and geopolitical).
Serbia’s interest here, as I’ve already written above, is hard to discern. The individual politicians involved will, of course, have their moment in newspapers as they stand by brand new airframes, shake hands with pilots and with Russian officials or MiG representatives but there is much more to it than that.
As for lamenting the disappearance of the Yugoslav army, forget about it. No army tradition could survive what happened to Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Besides, most of what was good about it was myth and its vulnerability to political squabbling within the country became more than apparent in 1991. That said, it stood head and shoulders above the combined armies of all the successor states but then, that was a Cold War thing as much as anything.
you my friend.. are a logical guy. but everyone here wants shiny new toys.
I don’t see how Mig-29M2 is an overkill for policing, and protecting Serbian sky. Its a small/medium multirole airplane fast enough for policing.
No. the MiG-29M2 is 56 feet long.. it is a lot longer than all Eurocanards, F-16 and closer to the Super Hornet.
its also heavier than all the Eurocanards. Its close r to a medium/heavy airplane
It can be easily adapted to NATO requirements should Serbia enter NATO in the future.
What do you mean by adapted and by easy?
Till this day I have not seen one western radar guided missile paired with a Russian Radar. Lots of IR one sure (but it takes time).. radar ones take lots of integration effort.. and who will pay for that? Broke Serbia?
And also how adaptable is it? All those Polish and other Warpac aircraft that joined NATO had relatively minor modifications done.. when I mean minor.. mostly just changing the IFF and engine specs and that’s it. These air forces are still keeping a separate weapon supply chain for their Russian and non Russian aircraft.
What is your suggestion they should buy?The only other option I see that is better priced are new frames from China. FC1 or J-10 perhaps.
They should buy more S-300s, fix up the rest of their existing MiG-29s and fly those, or buy Yak-130s
Of course, I forgot, a reliable source does not constitute any support for an argument, but your ramblings on forums, “opinions”, fanboy wet dreams and web heresay constitute definitive proof. You are also “privy” to some mythical contract the Chinese are supposed to have signed and know for sure that they will order 250 JF-17s, and lets not forget your idea that the JF-17 is far superior to the SU-30. Besides, aren’t you the guy behind this quasi conspiracy theory/paranoid website? Who lives in a world of their own now? Grandestrategy?! what a joke!
