One thing about the 60’s jets is that they looked incredibly long when they weren’t so long

as in the F-104 which is closer to the mig-29 in length but looks flanker long
    or the F-8 or su-9.
I guess a lot of it has to do with how small the cockpits were back then.

is weather related damages to engines common?

    never had a deployable helicopter..
    problems from day 1

    not very good.

I wonder which of the NH90 customers will be the first to replace them (not completely unfeasible as Austria is going to replace their Typhoons)

actually ive been wondering if its fair to consider the F-4 a 60s fighter.
Sure the A and B versions were in the US Navy at that time
but most of its exports were done at the very end of the 60s, and mostly the 70s.

it always felt to me more like a 70s fighter.

but the skepticism tends not to be applied evenly.

News about Su-35 to China? no no no way

News about FC-1 to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Venezuela, and a jillion other countries? Hell Yes (actually very few exports in reality)

Sure.. no one remembers your agenda regd. the allegedly impossible sale of Su-35S to China.. and even less we do remember your injured rant after it was found out that the sale, indeed, has materialized.. everyone here is just a fanboy but you alone are an epitome of objectivity.

Yes Deinosaur is a well known chino-fanboy (almost all of them don’t even live in China). and yeah we know he denied the su-35 sale to the very end (like most chinboys).
But I give our brontosaurus friend credit, he has a healthy interest in non-Chinese stuff too. He posts in Russian, Middle-eastern sections, etc.

That’s a big difference from the other red flag thumpers who only strictly follow Chinese aviation and nothing more. Thats why when it comes time to compare aircraft, they make wild crazy claims, because they have no background on other aviation.

For example they claimed a photoshopped Romanian MiG-29 was Chinese, when every one else said no.

When the J-10 came out, they said it was the same size as the F-16. when everyone else said no way

and now the J-20, they refused to believe it was Flanker sized and smaller than the Su-57. that was until the non fanboys provided photographic evidence and measurements.

if the J-11D is an improved clone of the MKK, why did they do away with the square tipped fins?

ah yes, the Super Tiger was interesting.
Didn’t know too much about it besides the name.. but Wikipedia brought up something interesting

Having failed to secure the Navy contract, Grumman marketed the Super Tiger to foreign customers. The Super Tiger outperformed the Saab Draken, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, Dassault Mirage III and Fiat G.91 in a tender to equip the Swiss Air Force. The Mirage III was finally chosen as a cheaper and more secure alternative, yet a close second in terms of performance.[2][3] In order to interest the Germans, Grumman proposed a 10,500 lbf Rolls-Royce Avon installation instead of the J79.[4]

Really interesting to see how awesome it was, but also how good the Mirage 3 was too. thought the Draken would have also been super.

    27-32 million is pretty good.
In many ways this is the ideal aircraft for Austria (the Central European power house).

They bought Typhoons, spent more money to dumb it down, so it can shoot sidewinders.

the Golden Eagle can do just that, has enough range for a small country like Austria, and also can shoot sidewinders..but at a much cheaper acquisition and operational cost.

giving more credence to the idea that collaboration with the Germans in the post-cold war era is a bad idea..

latest news is that the German Navy rejected their latest frigate due to bad engineering!
it seems the quality of German military engineers has gone down with all these issues plaguing various weapons
(at least the Leopards are still good..although it seems didn’t perform so well in Syria or the Turks are poor drivers)

Lesson for customers wanting a Western European helicopter.. buy British, Italian, or pure French. Maybe Polish if your poor.

Russians can make a good AESA radar, its already in their other stuff, no question about it.
But it is curious that they decided not to put one in any of their Flanker variants when they could.

Back on the subject of Chicom jets..

Anyone have more detail on the L-15 deal with Zambia? what weapons did they order with it and how they intend to use it? as a trainer or as a light fighter or ground attack plane?

I am surprised the Russians still haven’t placed an AESA radar in any of its Flankers yet (35 is Pesa correct?)

    check out the news thread.

Belgium is having mad problems with their NH90. Mad problems!

such a shame.. its probably the most beautiful looking of the new gen of helicopters (well a lot of them are good looking.. Mi-38, EH101.. but not the Surion)
