after losing the Vietnam War in 1975 (58,000 U.S. servicemen killed), the U.S. will never fight another land war in Asia.

    but they did
over a decade in South Asia (or Central Asia)

Y-20 I totally agree with your post!

However some people on this board speak of Brazil as some sort of great military power. I thought it was time set the record straight.

    indeed its quite true.
however the solution isn’t so easy

russian’s can’t really do nude beaches because they’ll freeze to death most of the year
american’s can’t really do nude beaches because they have too much other things to show when naked
chinese cant really do nude beaches because they have nothing to show

    its brazils world.

I hve seen this inlet shaping somewhere else

A close look at the nose shape (very rounded) makes me thing that IF this plane feel in the stealth class of aircraft, the Japanese hve mastered RCS design and computation.

    its f-22 style inlet shaping.

the nose is faceted as seen in this full scale wooden mock up that was unveiled some years ago

obviously, since argentina had them in 1982 ^^

anyway, be it UK or France, you’re talking about military powers way above Argentina’s reach… and, it as a navy, or in ground troops, France had the means to retake the Falklands back, maybe even more so than the UK that was reorganizing its military at the time, if my memory serves well, and had to “improvise” somewhat with what they had (Vulcans were just retired days before having to bomb Port Stanley, with improvised aiming devices, for example…)

the french had Mirage IV’s in operation at that time (not quite a vulcan but close)
Foch and Clemenceau (but im not sure if france would’ve sent both to down)

what was the aircraft count back then.. 20 entendards/SuEs and 10 Crusaders? some Alizee?

why does brazil need to be a military power?

its not China, it doesn’t have to start a conflict with nearly all of its neighbors
its not the US, it doesn’t need to start a conflict with nearly everyone else’s neighbor
its not Russia, it doesn’t have to bomb its neighbor to kingdom come.

brazil is quite peaceful with its neighbors.
why does china, the us, and russia have so much agression and brazil doesn’t?
studies show that its due to the prevalence of nude beaches in brazil. if chinese, americans, and russians spent more time being publicly naked, they would be less angry.

I do not believe the Sea Vixen could operate from 25 de Mayo. Other than the Harrier, the Skyhawk was pretty much it for a Collossus/Majestic class carrier. She even had problems with the SuEs.
Im not seeing why all the a/c are being switched to British ones………in real life, Argentina had pretty good relations with UK until the war.

its as you said, Argentina had working relations with the UK and in this scenario there is no war between them, thus UK would continue to sell arms to them.

Agreed, it does seem that way, except for some other details. Also, I think it is quite subtly rather original in its solution. Its an A2A platform but designed for lower costs in mind. As such it is different from the Raptor, which is kind of a high end, no expense spared platform, and also different from the F-35 which is essentially an A-35…

Looks can, in that sense, be deceiving.

this assumes the chinese wanted a hi lo design.
j-31 could also be a different type of hi design.

FINALY someone brings a little reality into this inane thread! The whole point of the thread demands just too much suspension of reality…………I guess I can get by the supposition that Russia (USSR) somehow maintains control of the Falklands (even that it maintains control of them after WW1 wich would be bizzare indeed) and post WW2 it still has them. OK.
What does Soviet Union DO with them? Have they remained a stagnant backwaterfishing/wheather station? Or have “colonists” been sent down? If its the “colonist” route then there will probably be a military presence on the islands, and then that changes the ENTIRE ballgame down South America way. For starters, the US would maintain a sizable naval presence down there……in fact there would be a very good chance that US forces would be based in Argentina. The Argentine military would be much better equiped than was the case against UK. I think we could very well see an Argentine AF equiped with F-4s and Buccanears. Interesting.
For those that seemed to love bringing up the Soviets “access” to Angola……….you do remember that Angola was an active war zone at the time dont you? I doubt the SAAF would have approved of Soviet stratigic bombers operating in that area. It would probably be safe to say that Reagan and Thatcher would disapprove also. The chances are high that any arms santions against South Africa would “go away” at that point.
the last thing I’d like to bring up is that people here are supposing that the Soviet Navy would be able to pull off something that it had NEVER done befor, and something that it was not designed to do, nor in all likelyhood even have the logistics capability of doing. The RN with its hundreds of years of experience had a very difficult time of it. The only experience in long range ops the Soviets could look back on was a Russian deployment in 1905 that didnt go too well for them.

you have a good point that everyone forgot. If the Soviets were down there, then the US would definitely be down there twerking to Argentina’s manhood.
bad luck for the Soviets, it won’t be a cakewalk then.
no south american grozny if there’s a bunch of Hawks and F-4s stationed down there

    Not over any islands.
You guys really need to get past this whole “Dem Russians will blow the **** out of anyone who messes with them!” mentality.

you should be honored.. it seems unanimous here that the USSR would do a better job than the UK.
perhaps we should give the islanders another referendum if they want to be Russian instead of Brits.

Forget Cuba, Angola is closer and does not require huge detours to avoid neutral parties’ sovereign airspace! The civil war raging there simultaneously might have been a nuisance though.

    hey baby you are right
Angola to Folklendskie ostrova = 7700 km
Cuba to Folklendskie ostrova = 8400 km (this is a straight line going through other airspaces).

If flying from Angola, the Bear can nearly make a round trip un-ruefuelled to Folklendskie ostrova and carpet bomb the island before going back.

I agree. Sorry if I sounded harsh in the last statement directed towards you. I think this is a problem we face. We went in with the notion that the F-35 was suppose to be a cheap fifth gen aircraft. Which is not going to be the case. I think that because we have already invested into the aircraft that politicians want to save face and stick with it. I think the super hornet and eagle are dead end aircraft. They may last for the next 10-20 years but that is all. We need something that can stay current longer.

Eurofighter and Rafale have the possibility of bridging that gap. They are in service with a few major air forces.. So I can see them being current up to when we next decide to purchase another aircraft. We have bought a number of foreign hardware for our military before. But I’m just not sure of the chances to get one of those inducted into our force structure.

    i see..
eagle and hornet are too last gen
    possibly eurofighter and rafale too

but F-35 is current gen but might not have the legs to cover Canada’s huge vastness..

perhaps the only thing Canada can do to stop hordes of submarine launched Pak-Fas is this

    http://i40.tinypic.com/27yv09s.jpg

might as well.. Vancouver is already Chinese. The only obstacle left preventing Chinese domination of Canada is Toronto where they are at battle with the Indians.
