TA805 – Spirit of Kent doing a funeral flypast.

The gentleman in question asked for a Spitfire to display as his funeral procession paused on Madeira Drive.

Job done! i hope he had a fitting send off.

Many thanks for the info , well yes whoever he was he had a brilliant display to send him off.

I assume the Kent Spitfire would have to have permission to do a display like this from air traffic , as theres usually many light aircraft pottering along the coast ?

Oh so Im not sure which Spit then, It was definatly PR blue and had the stripes, and although Im no expert the engine did sound more like a Griffon

Ok Ive now been informed it was the Kent Spitfire, Is that now in PR blue or was it just my eyes in the blue sky sunlight ? and Is a Merlin or Griffon ? (crikey maybe my ears and eyes are going lol)
I would still like to know what the display was for and who was the pilot.

I remember when I got a surprise visit to the tower at Holbeach ,after watching various bomb runs I asked the guy whos the best RAF or USAF ,he replied “Oh RAF easily but only because they could not afford more than one or two practice bombs each so they HAD to get it right whereas the Americans would drop a pile and if they missed they just went back and got a load more lol “.

Moggy ,back in the Mildenhall airfete days I use to stay at this place and spent many hours talking to this guy into the early hours over a pint or three , Im glad to hear hes still there. He has some really interesting stories, I believe it was his mother who married a high ranking US officer and hence moved to the states where he joined up , he told me that when they were due to go to Vietnam he believes it was his mother who pulled some strings with her husband to get him a safer posting (which really annoyed him ) as he ended up getting posted back near his old home at Lakenheath.
His call sign was Tiger 1.
I will have to get B&B there again as I havent stayed there since the last Airfete.

When I was an apprentice around 1980 we had a new apprentice a couple of years younger and we became good friends ,I remember we were always short of money but on his 18 th or 21st birthday he was given a large sum of money that had been put in trust for him, of course we all asked who left it for him and he explained it was from his grandfather Mutt Summers although as I gathered my mates parents were adopted by Mutt. At the time I had no interest in aviation so asked him who Mutt was and he replied “oh something to do with testing the bouncing bomb “
