In 1953 the CIA overthrew the democratic Iranian government, for one. Then there were numerous intrusions in Iran’s territorial waters in the 1980s, a certain A310 shootdown for which not even apologies let alone reparations were offered… Even though the US might not have planned an invasion of Iran in the past, you can’t deny that the US intentions could well have been percieved as hostile during, for example, the 1980s. And today just as well.

The A310 was on a scheduled flight within a commercial air corridor within Iranian territorial waters and was climbing and moving away at 385 knots from the USS Vincennes, which was at the same time illegally in Iranian territorial waters. The whole incident unfortunately (for the US) was captured on video and led to the death of 290 passengers-an event that is marked every year in Iran.

The US “regretted” the mistake but their spin (told by Chief of Joint Staffs Admiral Crowe) was that the airliner was on a hostile trajectory heading (= heading towards and descending-the complete opposite of the truth) for the missile cruiser and implied it could have been an Iranian F-14. They did not want to admit where they were, and bearing in mind it was 1988 around the time of the Iran-Iraq War, they did want to admit or apologise for their mistake.

Others have mentioned the possibility that Iraq was given a licence to invade Iran as “punishment” for the taking of the American hostages. Saddam invaded some 8 months after the hostages were released. Although both sides were being supplied during the war (!), Iraq did get the green light for purchasing US Boeing airliners and were given hundreds of millions of dollars in US credits.

After the installation by the US of an absolute Monarch, the Shah (both he and SAVAK, his secret police, were hated by his own people) in place of a democratically elected Government in 1953 (so much for spreading democracy by the Land of the Free!), it is small wonder that the US may have a hard time selling their “good guys” pitch in Iran.

Fortunately for the Americans, the clerics are not the most popular with the Iranians and they might find a “regime change” can be effected without the need to resort to an invasion. Despite their unpopularity, any “tainting” of a movement against the clerics with the US would of course result in uniting the Iranians against the “common” enemy as happened when Iraq invaded Iran. Being Shias with a special regard for the murdered Fourth Caliph Imam Ali, they celebrate the notion of “martyrdom” and would welcome an “Operation Iranian Freedom” by the US!

You have brought back memories of my old 4″ reflector borrowed from school in London-you can imagine not the most ideal place with all the lights! My old school had a planetarium, albeit a mini one – but still good. Part of our “O” Level Exam (in the seventies!) was to do a project on the 4 visible moons crossing Jupiter but all we could do was draw them!

You have some nice photos from your 10″ Meade-we could only dream of making photos as good! I remember doing drawings of the various craters on the moon such as Copernicus (particularly bright some nights) and of other distant objects such as the Seven Sisters (Plaeides).

I recommend astronomy for anyone interested in the sky-we also had a bit of navigation thrown in as well which might be useful later -and the sites recommended above are good.

I personally am also interested in cosmology! Will the Universe continue to expand at ever increasing speed as there does not appear to be enough ‘dark matter’ to arrest the expansion? How many parallel Universes are there and can we connect to them or empirically prove their existance? And biggest question of all: what was there before the Big Bang 12 Billion years ago?

Tony, one other book which you definately should read (if you haven’t already): Lolita by Nabokov. Even if you don’t like the story, i don’t think any author made prettier sentences than Nabokov.

Thanks Arthur, I’ve got another one to add to the list. I can get past the story to appreciate the writing.

I love Anna Karenina by Tolstoy – his prose is easier to read than Dostoevsky who tends to talk about darker subjects as in Crime and Punishment – but there are passages in The Brother Karamazov that I thought were brilliant: when he decribes what it would be like if Christ came to Earth today. Aside from the subject matter, the writing just flowed – but you have to get through stickier bits in the beginning and end to enjoy it.

Apart from that, i’m currently re-reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ One Hundred Years of Solitude because it’s so beautiful

Arthur, if you haven’t already read it, you may like Love in the time of Cholera by Marquez, which personally I believe is a better read than One Hundred years of Solitude.

    I recently got a Peugot 307 Hdi.

The 2.0 litre diesel engine is quite smooth and only costs half as much as the Laguna petrol engine I had before.

Does any body know why “What Car” (end section listing best buys) says don’t go for the VW Golf 2.0 Tdi?
I thought it looks pretty good and wonder why they say stay away from it.
