Were abouts did you take them from by the way???

My office (we’re nothing to do with the airport, we simply rent the floor space 😉 ) is based on 7th floor of Norfolk House, up above the South terminal, and there’s a great view from up here. My boss even had the consideration to let me have the desk by the window – more fool him! I’ve got a great view of the south terminal long-haul “satellite” gates across to the North Terminal apron. Luckily we’re not on the southern side of the building or I’d get no work done at all 😀 .

If you know where the old Gatwick viewing area/enthusiast shop used to be, the Oasis and Sunset photos were taken from about three floors above there 🙂 – it’s a shame the windows never get cleaned!

The misc arrival shots were taken from the south terminal short term carpark, so were shot into a heavily back lit sky at lunchtime, so for a first attempt at using the new camera and it’s centre-weighted metering option I’m reasonably happy with them.

Hope to post more photos in due course though i don’t bring the camers in everyday, and Sod’s Law says the exciting things happen when the camera’s at home! I’s just a shame that most of the LGW interesting arrivals and departures seem to be early am or late pm, theres nothing much but assorted “city-hoppers” moving at lunchtime.

I have mine covered as part of our House & Contents Insurance.

However the total value needs to be checked if you follow this route as there is often a limit to max/total value of items they will cover under one claim if the items are stolen whilst “out of the house”. I almost changed insurers a few years back due to better quote, but then noted a far lower “personal effects” limit for goods taken outside the home. Some insurers might want them listed as individual costed items on the policy, rather like valuable jewellery?

So, if you think the gear is covered on normal H & C insurance policies check that point just in case some toe-rag takes them from your parked car, or mugs you and makes off with whole lot. Both the total value per claim, and the indvidual item value maxima need to be considered, as either may limit the total you can claim if the whole lot goes walkies while you are out and about.

    Excellent Mark 12 – keep ’em coming….

The Old Warden photos bring back memories of my first trip to Shuttleworth, probably sometime in ’73 or ’74 I guess. Neil Williams seemed to fly just about everything they put into the air in those days… They issued copies of their their annual display program on a piece of heavy duty card if you sent them an SAE, and their ‘phone number was Northill 211 (strange what weird facts the human brain remembers isn’t it).

Although the infrastructure at OW has changed a great deal since then, and a few ‘planes and people have come and gone, it always retains the same “cosy and peaceful” atmosphere that caught my imagination thirty years ago, even when the display includes noisy paraffin burners – I guess it’s the geography/layout/rural surroundings of the place that help.

    Dave M2,

The HAF website shows photos of a (correctly identified) Ju52 being recovered on “Oct 3rd 2006” – are you sure they are recovering the ’87 too, as there is no mention of any other current ongoing recoveries?

I hope they are lifting the Stuka too, as the ’52 looks to be in fairly good condition, so the Stuka might hopefully be similarly intact apart from actual impact damage…..

Sorry to disappoint, but the photos on the HAF site suggest it’s actually a Ju52, and NOT a Ju87 that was recovered, with the nose engine and tail missing.

I did wonder when I looked at the photo/links posted earlier in the thread (and in post above), as the underwater shots seemed to show the typical Junkers “Corrugated” skin, and an underacrriage leg and tyre that seemed more like a ’52. However, not wanting to make a fool of myself I kept my mouth shut….

The recovery photos now seem to me to confirm it.

    – Not that a genuine wartime Ju52 isn’t important, it’s just that it’s not quite as “sexy” as a Stuka.

That said, one of the underwater photos does show what appears to be a more slender, smooth skinned fuselage, with Luftwaffe code letters etc, so maybe that is a Ju 87 waiting still to be fished out….

Photo 137 – The P51D in the shot is the example that is now at the IWM in Lambeth, and is not the current airworthy machine operated out of Woodchurch by Rob Davies.

Looking at these recent post (excellent thread Mark 12) makes me think its about time I spent an evening hunched over my PC&scanner and posted a few shots from this era too.

I guess the fact that the replica was fairly light, had lots of drag by virtue of its design, and was travelling fairly slowly, meant that it fell relatively slowly, and then it cushioned the impact as a result of the structure deforming and collapsing as it hit the ground – but still one very very lucky guy to escape with such (relatively) minor injuries.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that many pilots from the early days of aviation survived multiple accidents relatively unscathed due to the relatively slow speeds and low altitudes involved, plus the construction of their aircraft, which tended to crumple on impact, thus diffusing the energy involved.

    Roger,

I’m based here (LGW) every weekday – let me know what you want if Damaschi can’t get it for you.

I’ll need to bring the digicam in (or borrow the office one for an hour 🙂 ), but otherwise no problem so long as it’s not airside, as we only rent offices up on top of South terminal, so are not actually part of the airport, and only have landside access.

    PM me with details

The angle of bank in that last photo is impressive – damn near what they achieved during the Farnborough displays this summer!

The first shot of the geese (ducks?) is stunning – looks like it’s one of those “How birds wings flap their wings” diagrams out of a text book, well caught Martin!

    How very sad to see…

As a spotty Air cadet I spent a week at Binbrook in summer of 1974 (give or take a year) on summer camp. My memories are of a vibrant, busy RAF station.

The hangars were full of Lightnings in various states of dissassembly, and the view from the tower across the airfield is etched in my memory – rows of shiny silver 5 Sqn and 11 Sqn Lightnings lined up on the apron, and screaming down the runways.

A couple of stripped out Lightning hulks sat out on the airfield as decoys, and a pair of AEF Chipmunks spent the week on site taking the visiting cadets on air experience flights. Other non-residents seen during the week included RNethAF F-104s, RAF Phantoms, a Belfast, and an Andover.

We also went to RAF Manby for a night exercise that week, and although it was dark, memory tells me the base felt largely intact – does that site still exist, or has it too succumbed to development?

Will try and dig out some of my photos if anyone is interested? – geeze was it really nearly thirty years ago!

Some ghost do haunt the place where they died, some Haunt the place that was special to them.
    James

Presumably that means that the crowd lines at places like Old Warden or the tank bank at a certain airfield will one day be crammed full of ghostly figures toting sphectural Canon digicams????
