    UUORET,

Yep, we all know what the answers are TODAY, I was simply saying perhaps the current situation could have been avoided had people had been a little more forward thinking when the airframes were up for retirement.

Again, I am happy to stop (pointlessly)debating the situation and write a couple of “Angry of Sussex” letters if someone can point me in the right direction.

Rather than debate the issue endlessly, can someone here please post the relevant contact details so that some of us can perhaps start doing something constructive to try to save them?

If enough people get behind the issue and push BA (and perhaps RAFM too) to spend a few pounds on them then maybe they can be saved, at least for a few more years?

But three points are worth considering – as has been pointed out:

1.UK climate does not help preservation of exposed airframes of any size.

    2. The cost of bringing large aircraft indoors is huge, esp. if it means a new building.

    3. Commercial airliners are probably not as appealing to the average man on the street as are noisy/macho fighters, bombers etc

So, no simple solution, but perhaps lessons to be learned on thinking ahead before “donating” such large (and unique) exhibits. Was Cosford the best location to send them too in the first place, or perhaps someone should have looked further ahead and done some “What if? s”

    – What will happen to them if (when :diablo: )BA decide not to fund their care & maintenance?
    – What will happen if Cosford want the space for new buildings?
    – What will happen if the airframes stay outside?
    – What if RAFM has no funds to care for them?

I know hindsight is wonderful (and the older we get the more of it we have 😮 ) but rather than simply bemoan their possible imminent fate, is it not time to learn from another (potential) mistake, and avoid it being repeated when the next large airfrmae is up for donation or aquisition.

In the longer term what will become of the Science Museum collection at Wroughton – will the Connie remain there forever, out of sight (and thus out of mind) to most average UK punters. Will Wroughton remain forever as a closed airfield on which Science museum can “lodge” artifacts that will never squeeze into South kensington, or will it one day be seen as a site of prime re-development potential, think how many houses or out-of-town superstores could be built there :dev2: ?

So, if someone here can post the relevant contacts I am happy to “waste” a few pence on letters or emails to BA (and RAFM) in hope of preserving the BA Collection a little longer, though I guess deep down I know that bulldozer awaits them. One letter will have little effect, but if we all stop whinging, and get off our backsdies then who knows what we might achieve – as someone implies in an earlier post on this thread:

“If we do “s*d all” now except moan amongst ourselves we can’t complain about their loss once they have gone for good”.

Yes, the program was certainly well done, and seemd a very well balanced dramatisation – no sensationalism, no unnecessary or gratuitous scenes etc.

Again it begs the question why did they make three attempts to take off, given the engine problems and the atrocious weather. However, I guess the situation needs to be put into the context of the practices of the time, rather considered in the context of today’s rules and regs.

The b&w footage (after the dramatisation) of the various tests on the effect of water on runways, involving Canberras and an Ambassador were impressive, and proof that those killed in the accident did not die in vain, as much was learnt as a result of the accident.

For once a well presented and thought provoking program from the Beeb, with no obvious victimisation of anyone involved.

    Trench-Art Spitfire

I’ve got an aluminium “Spitfire” model which was passed on to me by a member of my family some thirty years ago. It’s a fairly basic model, and is mounted on a fairly basic stand.

I believe it was made during the war – my Father’s uncle, who passed it on to me, said the chap who made it (his father perhaps) also fashioned a few Spitfire brooches out of one penny pieces (the old pennies that were about an inch in diameter for those forumites too young to know about “real money”). Unfortunately he never found one of those to pass on.

    Will post a photo asap.

    Still going strong…

    Hi Kev,

    (Long time no E-speak)

Your excellent report brought back memories of a similar trip I took in in ‘MSV at Coventry back in 1987 or ’88. We had stopped at Coventry for lunch on our way back to South Coast from a holiday in the North. I hadn’t realised AA offerred weekend circuit flights, and my other-half said “Go on then, finish off your holiday with a flight” – I didn’t need to be told twice.

I too remember the steep floor angle – it felt like you were mountaineering to get to your seats. The fleet were all carrying “50th Anniversary of the Dakota” logos back then – and some of them are still going strong pushing twenty (or so) years later.

    Dakotas forever (I suspect)!

    Best wishes for 2006 mate

    Thanks

    Tom,

Many thanks, I guessed someone on the forum would know!

I meant to make a note of the regs when we boarded each flight, but my mind was firmly in “holiday” mode, and I’ve been meaning to ask the Commercial Forumites for info since.

    Have a Good Christmas

    Yes it is (was) Coventry

    Hi F S

Sorry for the slow response, I tend to follow Historic forum rather then commercial and only pop into commercial occasionally. It doesn’t seem as if anyone else has answered your question, so I will.

The photo is indeed of Coventry – you can make out the Midland Air Museum collection (inc Avro Vulcan) tightly parked by the collection of buildings just above the left hand end of the smaller cross-runway.

You can also see the Air Atlantique collection of propliners (Electras, DC-3s, Shackleton etc)etc just below the end of the cross-runway.

Some good trip reports you’ve posted recently, and slightly different from the norm of reflecting passengers’ viewpoints – excellent photos too.

    Leonard Moseley’s Book

Thanks for the tip gents, but some of us are old enough 🙁 (just 😉 )to have bought/been given the book when it was originally printed back in the late 60’s…..

My copy is well thumbed, and starting to yellow around the edges….as you say it covers much of the stuff in the documentaries. Must be time to read it again.

I must also try and dig out my old bubble-gum BoFB cards – they were issued with the usual stips of bubble gum, colour stills from the film on one side, and shrunken copies of newspaper front pages of the period on the back. If I can only dig out my old Dinky Stuka and Spitfire die-cast models, and a cheapo BofB board game of the day then perhaps I have the excuse to act like an 1968 eight-year old again….running round with the planes shouting “Daka daka daka”. (Not that I need an excuse really 😀 )

What I haven’t picked up yet is the recent (RR?) book on the making of the film..one for my Christmas list.

Battle of Britain Film DVD Set

Continuing the BofB theme, I recieved the (UK) double DVD “Re mastered” set for my birthday last month, and have now watched just about the whole lot – the film itself and many assorted extras such as documentaries, Directors commentary, original screen trailers etc.

Although some of the documentaries show their age (spot the late 60’s fashions etc), they are a real eye opener as to how the film was made, loads of great background info on things like Jeff Hawke’s B25 camera ship etc.

Definitely one for the Christmas list if anyone hasn’t got it yet. All I need now is a huge plasma wide-screen and full surround sound to enjoy it to it’s fullest extent 🙂 .
