    “45-11371, VF-S, “Sunny VIII”, G-BIXL”
I’m afraid this is incorrect. Spencer Flack’s P51 VF-S “Sunny VIII” was NL1051S and marked only as 511371. It was never G-BIXL, that was Robs’s aeroplane as you have correctly listed at the top.
I have many happy recollections of Spencer’s aeroplane when it lived in the National Airways hangar at Southend. 😎

You have (in error I think) put G-BIXL at the top and bottom of that summary.

As I recall, Sunny V111 was N1051S, operated by Spencer Flack, and sadly lost in 1995. Sorry to be contrary !

Thanks for the correction! You are both right, of course! I made this error, when I copied this list from my handwritten notes, where the planes are listed in a different order. I corrected my post above.

    Hi
if you look at the photos I posted on post 249 your friends P-51 is the closest in shot

Yeah, these are great pics! Thanks a lot for posting them!
I want to show them to my friend. He has a few pics from a photographer who made some on the ground at that time, but he has no air-to-air pics showing his Mustang together with B-17s. (At least he hasn’t ever shown me any.)

    Hi,
A friend of mine owns one of the Mustangs that were used for this film. It is 44-72773, registered as G-SUSY around the time of filming, wearing the film identity AJ-C. It had the name “Susy” around that time, though it did not wear it for the film.
I did some research about the Mustangs used for the filming of “Memphis Belle”. It is quite missleading, since two of the Mustangs had their S/N changed for the film.
I am still not 100% sure if all is correct, but anyway, here is my list, with S/N, film identity, name and civilian registration at the time of filming:

    44-72216, AJ-L, “Miss L”, G-BIXL
44-72773, AJ-C, “Susy” (name not worn for filming), G-SUSY
44-73149 (44-63221 for filming), AJ-S, “Moose” on the left side of the nose, “Candyman” on the right side of the nose, N51JJ
    44-73877, AJ-N, “Cisco”, N167F
    A68-195 (44-72917 for filming), AJ-A, “Ding Hao!”, G-HAEC
    44-14154, HO, “Petie 2nd”, N314BG
    45-11371, VF-S, “Sunny VIII”, NL1051S

All of them are P-51Ds, by the way, except for AJ-A which is a CA-18 Mk.22. The first five of them were painted in olive drab for the filming. The last two retained their original colors and were allegedly only filmed while they were in the background of bigger formations.

When my friend bought his Mustang 44-72773 a few years ago, he gave her the identity of “Lucky Lady VII”, which was a P-51D that was flown during the war by Capt. Ernie Bankey of the 385th Fighter Squadron, 364th Fighter Group, an “ace in a day” who had a total of 10.5 confirmed air-to-air combat kills to his credit.
My friend’s Mustang wore this identity until this winter. He has recently had it repainted into “See Me Later”, a P-51D flown during the war by Lt. Willbur Eaton of 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group.

Here is a picture of 44-72773 in its “Lucky Lady VII” identity. I haven’t had a chance to take pics of it in its new colors yet.

No, the Su-27UB as well as the first Su-30 models do NOT have a HUD in the back cockpit. (At least not the ones that I sat in or had otherwise had the chance to have a very close look at.) This thing is just a handhold, similar to the one in the back cockpit of the F-14. But some (if not all) of the data that is displayed on the HUD of the front cockpit can also be displayed in a similar manner on the CRT display screen.
I am not sure about the newer (export) versions of the Su-30 though (MKK and MKI). Although on the pictures I have seen so far, it looks very similar to the handhold thing, so probably, they also don’t have a HUD in the back.

Here is my list. I will skip the commercial airliners though, because they were just normal flights to get from A to B, and also because I didn’t keep track of all the exact types and versions. 😮 But it must have been 20 to 25 different types. Nothing really special, except for one flight in a A330 when the Captain invited me to sit on the jump seat in the Cockpit, after he heard me talking about aviation photography. 😎

So, here are the planes I have flown in for taking pictures or sometimes just for joy (I’m not a pilot):

    Single engine props:
    Partenavia P.64B
    Beech C23 Sundowner 180
    Cessna 182
    Cessna 185 Skywagon II
    Cessna 206
    Boeing Stearman
    Buecker Jungmann
    de Havilland Tiger Moth
    DHC Beaver
    Piper L-4
    T-6 Texan
    T-28 Trojan
    T-34 Mentor
    Antonov An-2
    Yak-52

    Multi engine props:
    B-25J Mitchell
    Junkers Ju-52
    Iljuschin Il-18
    Antonov An-26
    C-160 Transall

    Jets:
    L-29
    L-39C
    MiG-29UB
    Su-27UB
    Jet Provost Mk5

    Helicopters:
    Super Puma (Cougar)
    Robinson R-44
    UH-3H SeaKing

Also missed a few though, because of bad weather or other circumstances. An interesting one would have been a flight in the Fokker F27 of the “Golden Knights”. I was already strapped in right next to the door, when they had to cancel because of the weather.

I use Canon EOS 1VHS body, 28-135IS and 100-400L IS lenses. I use Fujifilm Velvia 100F and Provia 100F. But when I fly jets I only take a short zoom lens up in the air, because of free space in the cockpits 🙂

Thanks for the reply. I usually have a Nikon F5 body with 24-120 lens and sometimes also another (longer) lens. I use Fujifilm also.
But I recently also started using a digital body. It makes it a lot easier if you don’t have to change filmrolls while sitting in a narrow cockpit subjected to G-forces. 😀

The Russian Knights now fly Su-35s? Since when? Any pics of them Ken? Have the retained their canards?

The Russian Knights are still flying their display with their Su-27s. The five Su-35s they had received last year are not all airworthy right now, because of problems with spare parts. (I don’t know if even anyone of them is still airworthy at this time.)
Some of the pilots had started with a few training flights on the Su-35 last year, but no team aerobatics so far.

BTW: Recently, there was a short article in a british aviation magazine, stating that the Russian Knights have been reduced to a single Su-27 solo demo because of lack of funds. This is not true! The Knights still exist as a team, although they currently fly their display with five aircraft only, because one of their most experienced pilots, Dmitry Khachkovsky, left the team in october last year.

    Hi Air2Air.net,

Beautiful pics! I also had a look at your website, very nice!
I have a question for you: What kind of camera and what lenses do you use for your aerial photography?

PS: Sorry, for the similarity of my username, but I use the same nickname in some other forums, so I wanted to keep it in this forum as well. Also, I didn’t know that someone else is using a similar name, when I registered yesterday. I hope it doesn’t cause too much confusion. 😀
