I think you’ve got it all wrong. The An-70 will live or die irrespective of what happens with the Il-476. And like I said previously, there’s a need for both them.

The idea that short-field capacity is needed for AWACS, tankers, etc, is absurd

Nothing absurd about it….it was (and probably still is) a requirement for most VVS aircraft to be able to operate from rough airfields. Armageddon might not be likely but they have to plan for the worst case, WW-III type scenario.

I guess the IAF and PLAAF (2 of the largest airforces in the world) also got it all wrong then according to you guys…

The only civilian aircraft that seems to be entering military service so far is the Tu-204 and only in limited numbers for specialised roles.

What is the point of it? It will cost disproportionately heavy compared to just getting more An-124s.

They wouldn’t be making inquiries if there was no use for it. For a start, the An-225 that’s flying apparently can’t keep with orders and is booked for months ahead.

The Ukrainans have already given their price: $300 million. But given past events it’s highly unlikely the Russian MoD will be ready to offer even one-third the amount. I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked for it to be handed over free of charge like the Slava cruiser.

Antonov estimates the cost at around $100 million.

The cruiser needs to be completely overhauled, the An-225 fuselage is conserved and just has to be finnished

that’s not exactly a 2 year delay…

I think most air forces would argue with that. As a surveillance asset the aim is to maintain a continuous 24h AWACS orbit during a conflict

Where are you going to land your Il-96 Awacs if/when your major airbases are bombed in a major conflict?

Neither is the Il-476, or why do you think the next airframe off the line after the first flying prototype (hang on, why is it called a ‘prototype’…) is going to be a static test article?

I thought you said there wasn’t anything new in the Il-476?

The An-225 thing better be nonsense. That would be a colossal waste of money.

The VVS classifies the An-70 as a medium transport and the Il-476 as a heavy transport, in other words their considered a different class of aircraft. Flight tests for the Il-476 are scheduled for Feb 2012 and there’s no way the An-70 is going to replace the Il-476.

BTW, the Min. of Defence has officially requested the price for the completion of the second An-225

Work on a Hypersonic missile (mach 12-13) has begun according to the head of “Tactical Missiles” Corporation….it’s a separate project from the Brahmos-II

In the interview, Zelin confirmed that the Su-35 has priority but that they haven’t abandoned the plans for acquiring the Mig-35

last time we heard, boeing said J-20 is no match for SH 🙂

Like TR1 wrote, he was talking about a Hi-Lo mix for the VVS and that they would need a light 5 gen fighter to compliment the T-50.

First big scoop of the show? There’s a new targeting pod in town! NPK SPP has obviously not only usurped UOMZ as supplier of IRSTs, they are also aiming to provide A/G targeting on more aircraft than just the MiG-35 with its conformal system:

Good find. It’s hard to make out the stats though.

Weren’t the tests completed in 2000 already?? :confused: Even if these were factory tests, would it really take the VVS 12 years to complete the evaluation?
