The Su-34 is better suited to the air to ground role, for two simple reasons the side by side arrangement and its canards,
The canards on the Su-34 are for damping turbulance and increase lift at low speed, giving it a better ride than the F-15E, the Su-34 has also chines that reduce RCS, as a strike aircraft, the Su-34 is the better airplane, Russia is not purchasing Su-30s to replace the Su-24, but the Su-34, the Su-24 with VG wings has excellent low speed handling something difficult to get with the F-15 wing or Su-30.
The Su-30MKI has no side by side seating too.

That about sums the whole argument.

The Su-34 is a optimized tactical bomber with some self defence AA capability and has about 1.5t of armour. It’s more in the class of the F-111. The F-15E is best compared to the Su-30.

Another thing to remember is that the Su-34 is still a work in progress. The 2011 examples will receive another avionics upgrade.

    Ka-60 goes down….crew injured

Helicopter goes down in Moscow region
    Published 23 June, 2010, 15:13

Two pilots of a helicopter have been taken to an intensive care unit after the aircraft crashed in the Moscow region.

An experimental KA-60 helicopter was on a trial flight when it fell to the ground near a residential area. Investigators believe engine failure could have caused the accident.

Aviation experts say the pilots only survived because of the aircraft’s efficient safety system.

Seems to be official confirmation of previous speculation….

    …..

    Ukraine will build Russian ships

The Black Sea Shipyard in Nikolayev and a number of Ukrainian companies will be transferred to the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

The USC will get minority and blocking packets of shares from several Russian companies, specializing in export and import of vessels and equipment. The USC will also be granted tax relief.

This information became known after the meeting of the Security Council of Russia. The State will provide support to the shipbuilding industry of Russia, but the industry will be strictly accountable for the effectiveness of it’s spending of funds, said the RF Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev to reporters.

“State orders there will be, but control will be tightened”, – said Patrushev as reported by Itar-Tass.

continued in Russian at (it goes on about the restructuring of the shipbuilders around Russia and tax incentives) :

This is about as good a guess as we can get at this stage regarding the air intake.

Why are you so afraid of me? Are you so afraid that you keep insulting people that don’t share your point of view? Are you afraid that your beloved T-50 might not be what you think it is?

You remind me of a man whistling in the darkness trying to convince himself that everything is OK 😉

True, it is possible. But when you see what the russian yards have accomplished latest decade i doubt it very much. How many stories like this have we heard from russian navy last 10 years? We see delays in all projects, and almost nothing coming out of the yards

2010 is not the same as 2000 or 1990.

The ship is in Ukraine meaning work for the Ukranians and not taking up space in any Russian shipyard.

They’ve been interested in the ship since 2008 but couldn’t do anything at the time because of the political situation.

Speaking of radical designs (and Plasma shields ;))…

    —————————————————————

Russian Scientists a Step Closer to Creating “Flying Saucers”

Russian physicists have come a step closer to the creation of a so-called plasma envelope for supersonic airplanes that will allow increasing their speed many times.

As they reported from the Samara subsidiary of the P.N. Lebedev Russian Academy of Sciences Physics Institute (SF FIAN), the nature, structure and action of “shock waves in a non-equilibrium medium” that occur around a flight vehicle’s wing practically have been clarified. According to one version, thank in particular to the control of such waves they can achieve the same inconceivable maneuverability that the fantasy writers endow to extraterrestrial “flying saucers” from other planets.

“It is very important to examine all details of the shock wave resistance and structural changes,” one of the researchers of the effect, a graduate student of the Samara S.P. Korolev State Aerospace University, Rinat Galimov, says. – It is impossible to transition to the practical usage of the idea of a hypersonic airplane’s “plasma envelope” without it.

“While controlling this flow ((POTOK)) with the aid of a magnetic field, it will be possible to control the airplane itself, but for it one needs to create a plasma flow in the necessary place and with the necessary properties, declared Galimov, who has become one of the main developers of this subject.

The young scientist received a Russian Academy of Sciences medal at the end of April for the work he has done.

“Work on the creation of a plasma envelope has been under way for more than 20 years already. The discovery of Russian scientists with the participation of A.I. Klimov made as early as end of the ’80s is one of the fundamental ((discoveries)) in this area. One may call it the start of a new science – plasma aerodynamics,” the manager of the work, head of the SF FIAN theoretical department and doctor of the physical and mathematical sciences, Nonna Molevich, says.

At the present time the Samara physicists are studying shock wave structure in chemically active compositions. Interesting astrophysical applications also have been found in the work. It turned out that such an approach is applicable also to the research of non-equilibrium interstellar gas; therefore, research in this direction will help illuminate the nature of some astrophysical phenomena, too.

VVS has ordered the Mi-35M?? (or whatever the domestic designation is).

Russian forces to get more choppers

The Russian armed forces plan to increase their helicopter fleet several times by 2020, Alexei Samusenko the general designer of the Mil Helicopter Plant said at the HeliRussia-2010 exhibition.

He did not give precise figures but said that his plant has received orders from the Defense Ministry to build an export modification of Mi-35M helicopter as well as the military cargo helicopter Mi-26, which the plant had not produced for the army for a very long time.

The helicopter’s deliveries will begin already this year.

too bad it doesn’t have funding for more engines. as is, only a very small number of Yak-130s built and no more.

Those reports you are talking about, are those the same scetchy reports whom dates many years back:confused:
If not i’m very interesting seeing them, a link pls?

The research was deemed a dead end, impossible to put in a small fighter we are talking about here.
The sheer energy you need for this “plasma shield” can only be created aboard an airplane the size of an 747.. go figure..

It was found to be technically impossible to cover the entire airframe. The plasma shield would dissipate at high speeds and could not be re-generated quickly enough.

Apparently, experiments continued on generating mini plasma “clouds” on small sections of the aircraft which have the highest RCS, such as in front of the radar (the generator would switch off when the radar was being used and switch on when not used) and inside the air intakes.

There’s speculation that the system has been tested on the Tu-160 and some fighters.

The Su-27KUB was basically a single seat Su-33 with the cockpit section of the Su-34 ‘grafted on’.

It had bigger, folding wings, fins and non-folding tailplanes.

It also had TVC and was carrier-capable…..

Chances are the Chinese will build a version of the Su-27KUB for their carrier.

If the pic below is real, maybe they’re working on their own variant of the Su-34
