The SR-71 was traveling up to 60 km per minute and the MiG-31 at up to 50 km per minute in the darkness of the stratosphere. The consequences from that are obvious…………….

You’re being stubborn (as usual)….CGI might have given the fighters an approximate position but they tracked and locked the target with their IRST only from a distance of 100 + km.

I’ll see if I can find the original source when I get home. I’m writing from memory at the moment

No, they were not in general. The ground-control did inform the MiG-31s about the coming SR-71…….

The Blackbird left a huge IR signature behind it and it was possible to detect and track it using the Mig-31’s Thermal detection system (IRST combined with OMB (Optical Multifunction Apparatus))

    ————————–

Regarding the interception of the SR-71 here’s an example that I have from 1986

Six MIG-31 “Foxhounds”, vastly superior to the MIG-25 “Foxbat”, performed a co-ordinated intercept that would have subjected the SR-71 to an all-angle AAM attack that even a combination of high-altitude manoeuvrability and ECM could not have defeated.

Fortunately for the crew of the American jet, the interception took place over international waters, but the Soviets had nevertheless proved their point. It is uncertain whether this incident was a factor in the USAF’s decision to retire the SR-71 tree years later, although their flexible flying schedule and unmatched performance were sorely missed during IIPGW

The best IRST is considered the AAS 42 introduced an F 4 in 1992. It can detect (weather dependent, of course) a “cold” target at > 150 km. By contrast, the best Russian IRST (OLS 35 of the Su 35) can detect a cold target at 40 km. Almost 20 after the AAS 42 !

The Mig-31s were intercepting the SR-71 on many occassions using ONLY their IRST units back in the 1980’s…..they were able to detect it at a distance of over 100-150km.

The OLS-35 (and related systems) are integrated with an optical detection unit + a laser rangefinder/designator…..they’re more accurate than previous models.

It’s best to wait for a deal to be signed before getting into polemics about the Indian work share.

Personally I think Indians will make a significant contribution to the Pak Fa avionics and other sub systems. They will most likely eventually be building the whole aircraft themselves in the longer term.

I don’t understand how getting involved with the project in it’s early stages (there’s still a lot of work to be done) is suppose to hurt the Indian aviation industry ?

There is obviously both a vertical and horizontal bend in the intakes. There are also radar reflecting panels inside the intakes

The horizontal bend/non-allignment can be seen clearly from this angle (click to enlarge)

The problem with some people is that they cannot comprehend a different technical solution.

If they wanted to have a classic S-bend they would’ve gone with this solution:

The following video from March 2009 is about the modernisation of the SU-34 production line. At about 02:27 it mentions that the Su-34 has rear radar…but I guess we’ll have to wait for an official source to know for sure.

But in what way a joyride in these gas guzzling babies help to create a more environment friendly world (which must be the ultimate goal for a true envionmentalist, right?) is beyond me…

Beats me, I have no idea…..he has a TV show on French TV but I don’t know what the context of the visit was.

I understand, you took the bail-out handle. 😉

You’ve got something new to add?

or you’ve got nothing else to do?

I thought we agreed to stop going around in circles.

I’ve said what I had to say and people reading this can make up their own mind.

There’s nothing to reply to in the last few posts (just endless repetition of previous opinions and other selected non-sense)….

Just keep in mind that the tallies for EVERY war ALWAYS change as time goes by and more information becomes available. It’s been true for WWII, Korea, Vietnam, ME and so on…….

The ‘Mars’ mobile radar project might be part of the S-500.

Here’s a rough translation of what the commander of the Space Forces Anatoly Perminov told RIA novosti a while back.

The RTI have made substantial groundwork for promising mobile, high-grade multifunction radar (MARS) working in decimetric waveband.

It is designed to detect and determine the parameters of the movement of missiles, space and hypersonic targets at ranges up to 2000 km and the simultaneous guidance of interceptor missiles on target.

It feautures a digital adaptive phased antenna array, which in various modifications can be connected with various other radars (ground and airborne)

some (small) pics of the thing…
