Well, it is a Graupner, made in Germany same type of prop that i have used on some of my RC planes:)

Chances are it was a BP (British Petroleum) drone used for monitoring the nearby pipeline.

Here are 3 pix of the Pchela system in Georgia….the 4th pic is from the Russian MOD site (for comparison purposes)

if this was the case why have they scrapped three of the class and laid up the other three.

Maybe they’ve changed their mind 😉

It’s possible that they bring back a Typhoon(s) until the Borei’s enter service. Overhauled they’d be good for another 10 years or so

It could also be that only a few tubes on the Dimitry Donskoy is modernised to launch Bulava missiles. No need to replace all the missile tubes as long as the sub is only a testplatform…?

She spent a month at sea which doesn’t sound like testing the odd tube.

Here’s the original source in Russian

    http://www.sevmash.ru/?id=4695&lg=ru

I’m not a native Russian speaker but can read a bit….it basically sounds like the sub was doing more extensive tests according to the Sevmash link.

    Typhoon class modernised?

A report about the “Dmitry Donskoy” (Typhoon class) undergoing sea trials after a long period of modernisation. It states that it will be armed with 20 x Bulava misiles, so more than the Borei class…..does this mean the other 2 Typhoons will undergo a refit as well ?

Have a peek at Russia’s new submarine monster

    2008-09-01

The submarine “Dmitrii Donskoy” is 172 meter long, has a 49,800 ton deadweight and can carry Russia’s state of the art strategic weaponry, the “Bulava” missile. After more than ten years of upgrades, the vessel was last week successfully tested in the White Sea.

The Russian Navy now also confirms that the “Bulava” missile (SS-NX-30), an adjusted model of the Topol-M missile, will undergo final testing in September-October this year, Rossiiskaya Gazeta reports in its weekly edission.

The “Dmitrii Donskoy” (TK-208) is the only of Russia’s six Typhoon subs, which has been modernized to handle the latest of Russia’s missile, the “Bulava”. As BarentsObserver reported last week, the vessel has been undergoing upgrades at the Sevmash plant in Severodvinsk for the last ten years.

-Tests have been on a high level and with positive results, the vessel’s captain, Arkadii Romanov, says in a letter to Nikolay Kalistratov, head of the Sevmash yard. -The vessel is now ready for tests of the missile complex, he adds, Sevmash.ru reports.

The vessel – the biggest sub in the world – is unique with sheer size and its double hulls. It has a deadweight of 49,800 tons, a length of 172 meters and a width of 23,3 meters. The “Dmitrii Donskoy” was first put on the water in 1981. It is one of six Russian Typhoon subs, of which only three today remain in service.

The rebuilt vessel can have 20 Bulava missiles on board. That is more than the newest model of the Russian subs. The country’s first fourth generation sub, the “Yuri Dolgorukii” (Project 955 “Borey”), can take only 12 of the missiles.

WOW…now I feel a lot better knowing you care so much about my health 🙂

Maybe we should exchange some views on economics and geopolitics? I use to be a bit of a trader not that long ago so I’m not a total ignoramus….but since this isn’t really the right forum, I’ll give it a miss

Video of nuclear test on naval ships. It appears to be a Russian video production, but I’m not sure if the producer did a remake of an old American video, or it is an actual test conducted by the Russians themselves.

It’s definately an American test, from the 1950’s I think

More like a criminal holding hostages surrounded by SWAT teams. He may be holding them all at bay but his future is most definitely not too bright.

No it’s actually the bully who is use to having everything his way suddenly shocked to find not everything is as it seems….hence all the hysteria and fireworks.

As for the “bright” future comment, I would be worried about it if I was you. The rules of the game have changed, it’s just you guys haven’t realised it yet….but you will sooner rather than later

Brazil and Russia to Jointly Build Jet Fighters and Satellite Launchers

    Written by Newsroom
    Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Russia and Brazil signed an agreement on Tuesday, April 15, to jointly develop top-line jet fighters and satellite launch vehicles. Brazil’s Strategic Affairs Minister Roberto Mangabeira Unger said the agreement will lead to the development of fifth-generation jet fighters.

These military planes will be built using sophisticated engineering, such as composite materials, stealth technology and advanced radar, according to the Brazilian minister.

The agreement signed by Unger and the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Valentin Sobolev, includes the construction of rockets capable of hurling several kinds of satellites into space.

Brazil already builds its own small and medium-size rockets that are launched from the Alcântara base in the northeastern state of Maranhão. The base is considered an excellent launch site because it is located just 2.3 degrees south of the equator, the line at which the Earth moves the fastest, helping propel rockets into space with less fuel.

Tuesday’s agreement calls for advanced training in the field of cybernetics, which Mangabeira called “essential for the defense and the technological evolution of our industry”. It also involves the transfer of technology, something Brazil has always insisted on.

Earlier this year France said it would transfer technology to the Brazil for construction of the Scorpene attack submarine, helicopters and the Rafale fighter plane.

The Scorpene is a conventional attack submarine, but Brazilian officials have said they want the diesel-powered vessel to serve as a model for the development of a nuclear submarine that would be the first in Latin America.

Lots of theories – not many facts….who knows what the truth is?

Personally, I find it hard to believe the north Korean nuclear material story. If it was true, Israel and the US would make sure it was headline news around the world.

The Syrian’s are still insisting that they foiled the raid…

Speaking of the Israel’s operation in Syria last month, Habash said, “All the signs show that Israel carried out a failed operation. Its planes took off with munitions, targets, and a plan, but were surprised by the Syria’s aerial defense forces, which forced them to drop the munitions over an unsettled area.

For Russia this is not 2814ff, this is a big ego thingy.

I don’t think any country would spend millions just for the sake of an ego trip.

If you’ve been following the news lately, the Arctic region is increasingly becoming “interesting” from a geopolitical standpoint. By resuming bomber patrols, the Rus-AF will be re-activating some abandoned bases in the north and far east of the country. Long range bombers are a useful tool to project force in the Polar regions…..that’s just one (of several) practical reasons why the bomber patrols might’ve been restarted.

Good point, only one is for defense (ABM) and other for…

This looks like interesting news…..is this some sort of “over the horizon” radar?

Russia’s Air Forces to Apply Mountain Radar

Radio Radar Troops of the RF Air Forces will get new radar to monitor mountains, ITAR-TASS reported.
The radar is being developed by Almaz-Antey Corp. based on the most innovative technology. It will detect objects hidden from radars of previous generation by mountains’ shielding.

Passing into service new radar will ease surveillance of air and ground surface in Caucasus and mid.-Asia, i.e. at the most vital sections of borders of Russia and its partners.
